Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ralph Morris's guide to the island of Anglesey and coast from Liverpool to Pwllheli was first published over 20 years ago and has always been closely associated with the North West Venturers Yacht Club based in Beaumaris. This fully updated new edition is presented in the same format as previous ones but now uses full colour charts and photographs. * Coverage has been extended to include Porthmadog * Google Earth aerial images have been produced for every anchorage * The Tidal information has been reviewed and a new Tidal Atlas for Bardsey Sound has been included * 'Easy Find' tabs have been introduced for each section In the 1960s, Ralph Morris learned his way around Anglesey the hard way - in a day boat with one chart and a compass which one day chose to fail in fog. That's not what prompted the decision to write this pilot though. It was the increasing scarcity of Henry Glazebrook's Anglesey & North Wales Coast Pilot. A couple of members of the North West Venturers Yacht Club had written Cruising Notes for about half the coastline and after twenty years pottering around the Irish Sea it seemed like a good idea to complete the circuit and incorporate Henry's pilot. In the early years, club members backed and published the pilot with all the material (including the illustrations). The North West Venturers Yacht Club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011. Formed as a means of creating somewhere to sleep when it was too rough to camp onboard 18 footers in Beaumaris Bay, the club has prospered steadily. For its first 40 years, a majority of members came from the industrial communities of Liverpool and Manchester. Many of these have now emigrated to Anglesey and retirement. It remains steadfastly a family club with a galley and lounge, but no bar. Visiting yachtsmen are always welcomed. This 8th edition has been revised for 2012 with minor changes and improvements throughout. For corrections visit http://www.ralphmorris.com/corrections8_1.htm

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islands have long been the subject of cultural fascination, but in recent decades, they have exerted an increasingly powerful centrifugal force, sending writers to the outer edges of the British-Irish archipelago in search of inspiration and insight. Drawing on contemporary ecocritical approaches, island studies, and emergent archipelagic perspectives, Ecocriticism and the Island explores a wide selection of island-themed creative non-fiction. Through a combination of textual analysis, and, where possible, original interviews and archival research, Pippa Marland offers new insights into the work of Tim Robinson, Brenda Chamberlain, Christine Evans, W.G. Sebald, Stephen Watts, Amy Liptrot, Kathleen Jamie, Adam Nicolson, Robert Macfarlane, and David Gange. In assessing the ways in which these authors negotiate existing cultural tropes of the island while offering their own distinctive articulations of “islandness,” this book represents an important intervention into island literary studies. At the same time, it contributes to the development of an archipelagic strand of ecocriticism—one that offers a valuable perspective on human-environmental relationships in an Anthropocene context.

Book excerpt: From Treasure Island to Robben Island, from the paradise of Thomas More’s Utopia to Napoleon’s purgatory on Elba, islands have proved irresistible to mankind’s imagination since time immemorial. Self-confessed islomaniac Barry Smith explores how islands bewitch us so, and examines the kind of human experiences that islands inspire. Journeying all around the globe to take in the most fascinating stories of Earth’s half a million islands, this book considers the unique geography, politics and economics of islands and their cultures. It traces their singular place in literature, religion and philosophy, and disentangles the myths and the facts to reveal just why islands exert such an insistent grip on the human psyche.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present modern tidal ideas to those who are not tidal specialists, but for whom some knowledge of tides is involved in their professional or scientific field. These include hydrographers, marine and coastal engineers, geologists who specialize in beach or marine sedimentation processes, and biologists concerned with the ways in which living organisms adapt to the rhythms of the sea. Modern practical studies are concerned with problems of marine transport, coastal erosion and the design of coastal defences against flooding. Interest in mean sea-level changes has recently been focused on the possibility of significant increases over the coming century as a result of global warming. Examples of applications from North America, Europe and other parts of the world are included.

This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides accounts of well-established themes of general Celtic inquiry from new theoretical perspectives, in addition to addressing new areas of research that have remained largely unexplored. The collection includes contributions by both established and young scholars on diverse aspects of culture, literature and linguistics, reflecting the multidisciplinary character of current trends in Celtology. The linguistic section of the book includes chapters dealing with Welsh phonology and possible areas of influence of the Brittonic language on English, as well as with the issues of translating culture-specific aspects of medieval Welsh texts and the problems of standardising Irish orthography and font. The second part of the volume is devoted to literature and considers neglected, and heretofore unexplored, aspects of Welsh-language poetry, fiction and children’s literature, the work of John Cowper Powys, and Scottish film in the theoretical context of post-humanism. Approaching these issues from different angles and using different methodologies, the collection highlights the connections between long-established academic areas of interest and popular culture, broadening the horizon of Celtic scholarship.
