Book excerpt: "These art avengers...took on toxic debt culture—and won."—The Guardian "[They] want to blow up the whole financial system."—The New York Times Art hacks life when two filmmakers launch a project to cancel more than £1m of high-interest debt from their local community. Bank Job is a white-knuckle ride into the dark heart of our financial system, in which filmmaker and artist duo Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn risk their sanity to buy up and abolish debt by printing their own money in a disused bank in Walthamstow, London. Tired of struggling in an economic system that leaves creative people on the fringes, the duo weave a different story, both risky and empowering, of self-education and mutual action. Behind the opaque language and defunct diagrams, they find a system flawed by design but ripe for hacking. This is the inspiring story of how they listen and act upon the widespread desire to change the system to meet the needs of many and not just the few. And for those among us brave enough, they show how we can do this too in our own communities one bank job at a time.
Book Synopsis From Jobs to Careers by : Stacey Frederick
Download or read book From Jobs to Careers written by Stacey Frederick and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An oft-cited strategy to advance economic development is to further integrate developing countries into global trade, particularly through global value chains, bolstered by the expansion of female-intensive industries to bring more women into the formal labor force. As a result, a frequent debate centers on whether the apparel industry--the most female-intensive and globally engaged manufacturing industry--can be a key player in this strategy. In recent decades, the apparel industry has shifted production to low-wage developing countries, increasing the demand for women, closing male-female wage gaps, and bringing women into the formal labor force from agriculture and informal work. But is an apparel-led export strategy sufficient to induce a broader transition from jobs women do to survive to careers promising stable employment and a sense of identity? 'From Jobs to Careers' answers this question by focusing on seven countries where apparel plays a vital role in their export baskets--Bangladesh, Cambodia, the Arab Republic of Egypt, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Turkey, and Vietnam. It finds that the apparel industry indeed can serve as a launching pad to bring more women into the labor market. For this approach to work, however, complementary policies must tackle the barriers that hinder women's pursuit of long-term workforce participation and better-paid occupations. Key policy recommendations include increasing the participation of female production workers in export-oriented apparel manufacturing and associated industries, upgrading within manufacturing-related industries, boosting access to education, and breaking glass ceilings. The report also seeks to shift the paradigm of how we think of women in the labor force by stressing the importance of their transition from jobs to careers--the so-called 'quiet revolution.'
Book Synopsis Banks, Firms, and Jobs by : Fabio Berton
Download or read book Banks, Firms, and Jobs written by Fabio Berton and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We analyze the employment effects of financial shocks using a rich data set of job contracts, matched with the universe of firms and their lending banks in one Italian region. To isolate the effect of the financial shock we construct a firm-specific time-varying measure of credit supply. The contraction in credit supply explains one fourth of the reduction in employment. This result is concentrated in more levered and less productive firms. Also, the relatively less educated and less skilled workers with temporary contracts are the most affected. Our results are consistent with the cleansing role of financial shocks.

Book Synopsis The Best Book On Credit Suisse Investment Banking Jobs by : Amrit Rao
Download or read book The Best Book On Credit Suisse Investment Banking Jobs written by Amrit Rao and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-04-18 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Books: An expert behind every book ABOUT THE BOOK You don't have to be a financial wiz from birth (or part of the 1%) to be an investment banker. Just ask yourself this essential question: What interests you more: money or how money works? If you look in the mirror and see an energetic, curious, flexible person who is not driven by pure greed, yet understands that money makes the world go around, investment banking with Credit Suisse could be the job for you. This book delivers an insider's view of Credit Suisse investment banking, one of the top ranked investment banks >in the world. Amrit Rao, an analyst with Credit Suisse from 2005-2007, serves as your personal guide through this challenging but rewarding world of investment banking. MEET THE AUTHOR Amrit is currently a business school student at Tuck, after having worked for five years in the finance industry. Before he accepted a job at Credit Suisse (his first job out of college), he wanted to be a doctor and before that, a research scientist. His favorite foods include burritos, Thai and Indian curries, and basically anything with tofu. He's happiest when he's around his family (Mom, Dad and sister), and his close friends and their families. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Diversity of Experience With such a strong emphasis on a diverse culture, some successful applicants might not have even majored in business. There was an art history major in my analyst class. Many people majored in history, engineering, biology, it was a very long list for certain. So, don't panic if you don't immediately know the difference between APR or APY. Credit Suisse looks for a willingness to work hard that's rooted in a desire to learn. (Start with learning the difference between fiscal and monetary policy, that's an actual question asked in some banking interviews!) Life itself is an experience, but the successful applicant to Credit Suisse understands how to market his or her own unique experiences to the needs of Credit Suisse. For example, if you've lived or traveled abroad extensively, be able to communicate how those experiences prepared you for investment banking, such as the ability to adapt quickly to new situations.
