Book Synopsis Managing Sovereign Debt and Debt Markets through a Crisis - Practical Insights and Policy Lessons by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book Managing Sovereign Debt and Debt Markets through a Crisis - Practical Insights and Policy Lessons written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crisis highlighted the importance of debt management in containing debt-related risks and the associated impact on debt markets. The impact of the crisis on debt levels, and the consequent implications for fiscal consolidation, has been the subject of much discussion and analysis. However, there has been relatively less focus on the issue of how that debt should be managed, including how its composition should be structured so as to mitigate key risk exposures, and its implications for debt market functioning. That task proved significantly complex and challenging through the crisis, particularly in advanced economies, with additional dimensions of risk revealed.

Download or read book Canada written by International Monetary Fund. Monetary and Capital Markets Department and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Financial System Stability Assessment paper discusses that Canada has enjoyed favorable macroeconomic outcomes over the past decades, and its vibrant financial system continues to grow robustly. However, macrofinancial vulnerabilities—notably, elevated household debt and housing market imbalances—remain substantial, posing financial stability concerns. Various parts of the financial system are directly exposed to the housing market and/or linked through housing finance. The financial system would be able to manage severe macrofinancial shocks. Major deposit-taking institutions would remain resilient, but mortgage insurers would need additional capital in a severe adverse scenario. Housing finance is broadly resilient, notwithstanding some weaknesses in the small non-prime mortgage lending segment. Although banks’ overall capital buffers are adequate, additional required capital for mortgage exposures, along with measures to increase risk-based differentiation in mortgage pricing, would be desirable. This would help ensure adequate through-the cycle buffers, improve mortgage risk-pricing, and limit procyclical effects induced by housing market corrections.

Book Synopsis The New Finance by : Franklin R. Edwards
Download or read book The New Finance written by Franklin R. Edwards and published by American Enterprise Institute. This book was released on 1996 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic changes in information and telecommunications technologies have transformed U.S. financial markets in the 1980s and 1990s. This book examines the growth of mutual funds and derivatives markets and the decline of banks and explores implications of those developments for financial stability and regulatory policy. One of the book's central conclusions is that the current system of bank regulation is out of step with today's financial realities and needs to be substantially changed. Franklin Edwards asserts that the best way to increase the freedom of financial institutions to compete while making the financial system less vulnerable to excessive risk-taking by individual financial institutions is to adopt a system of collateralized banking. He shows how adopting such a system will result in a more stable financial system, both by reducing our reliance on government to maintain financial soundness and by enhancing the effectiveness of private markets in controlling institutional risk taking.

Book Synopsis Sovereign Risk and Financial Crises by : Michael Frenkel
Download or read book Sovereign Risk and Financial Crises written by Michael Frenkel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sovereign risk and financial crises play a key role in current international economic developments, particularly in the case of economic downturns. As the Asian economic crisis in the late 1990s revealed once again, financial crises are the rule rather than the exception in capitalist economies. The event also revealed that international public debt agreements are contingent claims. In a world of increasing economic interdependencies, the issues of financial crises and country defaults are of critical importance. This volume goes to the heart of the academic discussion on sovereign risk and financial crises by centering on quantitative-empirical aspects, evaluating prominent approaches, and by proposing new methods. Part I of the volume identifies key factors and processes that are central in analyzing sovereign risk while Part II focuses on the determinants and effects of financial crises.
