Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The colorful history of paper money before the Civil War Before Civil War greenbacks and a national bank network established a uniform federal currency in the United States, the proliferation of loosely regulated banks saturated the early American republic with upwards of 10,000 unique and legal bank notes. This number does not even include the plethora of counterfeit bills and the countless shinplasters of questionable legality issued by unregulated merchants, firms, and municipalities. Adding to the chaos was the idiosyncratic method for negotiating their value, an often manipulative face-to-face discussion consciously separated from any haggling over the price of the work, goods, or services for sale. In Bank Notes and Shinplasters, Joshua R. Greenberg shows how ordinary Americans accumulated and wielded the financial knowledge required to navigate interpersonal bank note transactions. Locating evidence of Americans grappling with their money in fiction, correspondence, newspapers, printed ephemera, government documents, legal cases, and even on the money itself, Greenberg argues Americans, by necessity, developed the ability to analyze the value of paper financial instruments, assess the strength of banking institutions, and even track legislative changes that might alter the rules of currency circulation. In his examination of the doodles, calculations, political screeds, and commercial stamps that ended up on bank bills, he connects the material culture of cash to financial, political, and intellectual history. The book demonstrates that the shift from state-regulated banks and private shinplaster producers to federally authorized paper money in the Civil War era led to the erasure of the skill, knowledge, and lived experience with banking that informed debates over economic policy. The end result, Greenberg writes, has been a diminished public understanding of how currency and the financial sector operate in our contemporary era, from the 2008 recession to the rise of Bitcoin.

Book excerpt: St. Louis, Missouri, is gripped by a rapid series of twelve bank robberies that leave local and federal authorities completely baffled. Dubbed the 'Boonie Hat Bandit' by the fascinated public, this infamous criminal methodically robs banks in broad daylight leaving no clues, causing everyone to wonder, Who is this man? Law enforcement is scrambling, and the robberies make national news. In September 2008, the gentleman bandit is apprehended and the stunned world finds out his shocking identity: Donald Keith Giammanco, a quiet, middle-class, single father of twin daughters. The big mystery remains: How and why would he enter a life of crime? In spite of repeated requests to tell his story, Keith Giammanco refuses to give any insight into his motivations for years...not, that is, until now. Written by the woman he falls in love with while in prison, Bank Notes delves into the thoughts and motivations of a notorious bank robber who is anything but the typical criminal, and the disastrous results of his robbery spree.

Book excerpt: Paper money as a form of art might seem the makings of a rather small exhibition, to judge from the modern bills of the United States and Europe. Bank notes, however, have constituted one of the dominant forms of visual communication for the past two centuries and, in many cases, can be seen as works of art in their own right. Money on Paper: Bank Notes and Related Graphic Arts from the Collections of Vsevolod Onyshkevych and Princeton University is the catalogue of an exhibition at the Leonard L. Milberg Gallery for the Graphic Arts, Firestone Library, Princeton University, from August 30, 2010, through January 2, 2011. It contains a full catalogue of the bank notes on display with colour photographs of many of them, written by Princeton's Curator of Numismatics, Alan M. Stahl. There are three additional illustrated essays in the catalogue. Mark Tomasko, author of The Feel of Steel; The Art and History of Bank Note Engraving in the United States , writes on "Bank Note Engraving in the United States." Francis Musella, a Princeton University undergraduate, has contributed an article on "Benjamin Franklin's Nature Printing on Bank Notes." The volume also contains an edited version of the newsmaking article by Robert Peck and Eric P. Newman entitled "Discovered! The First Engraving of an Audubon Bird."

Book excerpt: The hobby of collecting paper money is red hot. More and more people are becoming interested in this fascinating hobby combining banking, history, art, and even genealogy. Hobbyists have taken to collecting national bank notes as a fun way to stay connected to their hometown. National Bank Notes from Bowling Green, KY assumes the reader has a basic understanding of national bank notes and explores the author's hometown currency from Bowling Green, Kentucky. This non-fiction highlights over 12 years of work by the author including dozens of interviews and hundreds of research hours. The research involved cataloging surviving bank notes, documenting history of the banks, and finding biographies of the bank's officers who signed the bank notes. The research pulled extensively from the U.S. National Archives, Smithsonian Institution, Kentucky Library, and Comptroller of Currency Annual Reports. From 1874 to 1935 Bowling Green supported six national banks, with notes surviving from four of the six banks. Notes from the Citizens National Bank and American National Bank are fairly common, while notes from the Liberty National Bank and Bowling Green National Bank are quite rare. The Warren National Bank and National Southern Kentucky Bank have no surviving notes. The author loves the hobby of collecting paper money and shares that enthusiasm with his readers.
