Book excerpt: Remembered with great affection by locals and railway enthusiasts alike, the railway between Bangor and Afon Wen once carried countless holidaymakers through the Llyn peninsula. Closed like so many Welsh lines in the 1960s, today the trains of the Welsh Highland Railway run on its trackbed between Caernarfon and Dinas Junction while other parts of the former railway are used by walkers and cyclists. This photographic journey along the route will evoke nostalgic memories of this attractive line in its heyday.

Download or read book Ernest Marples written by David Brandon and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2022-01-12 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography examines the life and career of the conservative politician who led the charge to reshape British Railways in the mid-twentieth century. Ernest Marples was one of the most influential and controversial British politicians of the mid-twentieth century. As the Minister of Transport (1959–1964) he appointed Dr. Beeching chairman of British Railways and commissioned him to produce his infamous “Beeching Report”. Earlier, as Postmaster General (1957–1959), he reformed Post Office accounting systems and launched postcodes and Subscriber Trunk Dialing. Though Marples evaded implicated in the Profumo Affair which rocked the Conservative Party, his political career was over soon afterwards. Questionable business practices, and a 1975 flight to Monaco, drew scrutiny from Inland Revenue. Beeching, unhappy under a Labour government, returned to private industry. This biography of Marples draws on newly-available archives to examine Marples’s career as well as public and private transport policy, the growing power of the pro-road lobby, and the successful campaign to identify personal freedom with driving.
Download or read book Lost Lines written by Roger Norfolk and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2020-07-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 55 mile rail route between Birmingham and Oxford is still an important artery for the Nation's passenger and freight traffic. Trains from the north of England routed through Birmingham can gain direct access southwards to Reading, and thereby to the south coast. The photographs in this book, through, recall a time up to the mid 1960s when it was an altogether different railway. These were the dying days of steam and of equipment and working practices developed from Victorian times.

Book excerpt: The internet defines Gerard Kane. But after a death in the family and a dumping, can going off-grid save him?His pursuit of something outside the saturation of data takes him from Cardiff, and a web of family members caught in cycles of selfies and online gambling or relationships which fade without their Instagram filter, to a new community in the Danish woodland. With relentless energy and precise observation, Dan Tyte's second novel focuses on modern social behaviours and the impact of technology on our lives, relationships and perceptions. This sharp and highly contemporary narrative probes into our dependence on the internet, and to what extent we might be able to free ourselves from this, a concern of immediate relevance to an increasing number of the population.
Book Synopsis Lost Lines of Wales by : Jamie Green
Download or read book Lost Lines of Wales written by Jamie Green and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having covered the southern section of the Central Wales Line and its branches in Swansea to Llandovery, this volume traces the line from Llandovery to Craven Arms, where it met the North & West line, taking its traffic on to Shrewsbury. This takes in the remarkable feats of engineering the Victorians undertook to forge this line across the Welsh hills, as we take a nostalgic look at a railway lost; its country stations, signal boxes and heavy goods and express trains largely replaced by simple request stops and single-car diesel units.
Book Synopsis The Last Years of Steam Around North Wales by : Michael Clemens
Download or read book The Last Years of Steam Around North Wales written by Michael Clemens and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Ellis James-Robertson (always known as Ellis) was born in Wales but lived at Worcester from the mid-1950s and travelled extensively around the country building up a large railway collection. In the 1960s a few of Ellis’s photographs were published in books and magazines and the credit ‘R. E. James-Robertson’ may be familiar to some. This book of mainly unpublished colour and black & white photographs has been created entirely from Ellis’s North Wales archives, it will appeal to railway enthusiasts, modellers, and those interested in local history. The time period covered is from the mid-1950s through to the mid-1960s with steam being the predominant motive power. Much of North Wales is covered and in addition to BR standard-gauge lines, the narrow-gauge Penrhyn and Padarn slate systems are also seen. Ellis and his wife Norah celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in 2013, and Ellis passed on in April 2015 aged 92. Their daughters, Louisa and Fiona, contacted film-maker and author Michael Clemens whose late father was a friend of Ellis’s. Ellis’s collection lives on today at films shows around the country given by the author and now in this second of a number of books using his photographic archive.

Book Synopsis Estuary Birds of Britain and Ireland by : A.J Prater
Download or read book Estuary Birds of Britain and Ireland written by A.J Prater and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estuaries are rightly of great interest and concern to the birdwatcher. Most teem with thousands of waders, geese, ducks, gulls and other species that use them at times throughout the year; they are also among the last of the wild places left in Britain and Europe. The Birds of Estuaries Enquiry (sponsored by the Nature Conservancy Council and organised by the BTO, RSPB and the Wildfowl Trust) spanned six years, and Tony Prater's report now provides a detailed insight into the birds which use and, in many cases, depend on this special habitat. Of great interest to birdwatchers, the book also will be essential reading for professional conservationists and all involved in the planning and use of estuaries. It assesses the importance of each estuary and the distribution and numbers of all species generally present, and by setting this in an international framework demonstrates the remarkable importance of the estuaries around these islands. Threats to the fabric of the landscape and its wildlife abound, and estuaries are not exempt. Barrage schemes, industrial and agricultural reclamations and many other pressures exist and are the subject of chapters which survey the situation, now and in the future. The text is graced by John Busby's accomplished and evocative drawings and there are numerous maps and diagrams as well as photographs of typical estuaries. Jacket illustration by John Busby.
