He is correct in ascribing to Godwin's novel the interest that rests upon a vivid presentation of one situation; from beginning to end the attention is fastened upon the relations of Williams and the man who is first his patron and then his persecutor, Falkland, and, throughout, the action is based upon the unconfessed crime of the latter. The following comment in Godwin's preface shows how he himself valued the effect of such a structure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It has that suggestion of moss-grown tran quillity that the clatter of a sabot accentu ates, and in wandering through it any imag inative loiterer might fancy himself in the mouldering avenue of a forgotten town. But to return to the point, or rather to the house. In it lives a gentleman and with him a mem ory and a library. The gentleman himself may be spared any personalities. The mem ory which he cultivates is that of Balzac, while the library contains very nearly every thing that is in any way connected with the history and works of the French realist. Book excerpt: The plot for At the Sign of the Cat and Racket, if such a stately name can be given to so delicate a sketch, is of course open to downright British judgment to pronounce the self-sacriiice of Lebas more ignoblethan touching, the conduct of Théodore too childish to deserve the excuses sometimes possible for passionate inconstancy, and the character of Augustine angelically idiotic. The candew adorable which the Frenchman adores and exhibits in the girl the uncompromising, though mortal, passion of the woman are too different from any ideal that we have entertained, except for a very short period in the eighteenth century. Le Bal de Sceaux, with its satire on contempt for trade, is in some ways more like Balzacs young friend and pupil Charles de Bernard than like himself and I believe it attracted English notice pretty early. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of Balzac's best stories, about a man who keeps two households. The story begins with a chaste and lovely needlewoman called Caroline who spends her days by the window of a run-down house in a seedy part of Paris. A gloomy young man passes by each day and inevitably he notices her and begins to take an interest in her despite his depression. One day he sees that she is desperately short of money and throws his purse in through the window, and after that there's a picnic. One thing leads to another, and he sets her up in a charming house where she lives contentedly and bears him a couple of children. Her mother, a rather crafty old woman, falls ill before long and there's a splendid scene where three old biddies and her servant are all waiting for her to die so that they can get their hands on her money. On her death-bed she reveals the name of the man whose mistress her daughter is...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Prince of Bohemia: And Other Stories Here, however, it is possible for a good-natured critic to put in the apology that the artist has tried something unto which he was not born, and failing therein, has apparently committed faults greater than his real ones. This kindness is impossible in the case of the parodies, which are no parodies, of sainte-beuve. From the strictly literary point of view, it is disastrous to give as a parody of a man's work, with an in tention of casting ridicule thereon, something which is not in the least like that work, and which in consequence only casts ridicule on its author. To the criticism which takes in life as well as literature, it is a disaster to get in childish rages with people because they do not think your work so good as you think it yourself. And it is not known that Balzac had to complain of sainte-beuve in any other way than this, though he no doubt read into what sainte-beuve wrote a great deal more than sainte-beuve did say. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bachelor's Establishment, And, Honorine We conclude, therefore, that La Rabouilleuse is a very powerful novel worthy of Balzac at his best. Like Cousine Bette, however, it gives occasion for the criticism that our author succeeds best with his bad characters. Mme. Bridau, Mme. Hochon, who is in some respects a second Mme. Grandet, and Joseph, in spite of his goodness and genius, do not furnish the element of nobility that is needed to counter act the double - dyed villainy of Philippe, the coarse brutality of Flore and her paramour, the doting idiocy of old Rouget, the vile cynicism of his father, the Doctor, and the avarice of M. Hochon. The Parisian scenes are on the whole sordid: those at Issoudun are of absorbing interest, in the main, but do not leave one the better for having witnessed them. In deed the horse-play of the Chevaliers almost verges on the contemptible. In other words, Balzac's novel has its Iago but lacks its Desdemona. Still sheer power is in itself so wonder ful as to be almost if not altogether admirable, and sheer power La Rabouilleuse displays in a most marked degree. Sensitive readers will perhaps not care greatly for it, but then such readers could never be brought to appreciate Balzac in his entirety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from La Comedie Humaine of Honore De Balzac: A Woman of Thirty; Massimilla Doni; Honorine Early in the month of April, 1813, there came a Sunday morning that promised one of those fine days when the Parisians, for the first time in the year, see their sidewalks without mud and their sky without clouds. Just before noon a cabriolet drawn by two high-stepping horses turned into rue de Rivoli from rue de Castiglione, and stopped behind several other carriages standing in front of the newly opened gateway in the centre of the Terrasse des Feuillants. This light vehicle was driven by a man of careworn and sickly aspect; the sparse grizzled hair hardly covered his yellow skull and caused him to look prematurely old. He threw the reins to the mounted servant who followed the carriage, and alighted, to take in his arms a young girl whose dainty beauty attracted the attention Of the idlers walking on the terrace. Book excerpt: At the Sign of the Cat and Racket by Honoré de Balzac At the Sign of the Cat and Racket is a novel by Honoré de Balzac. It is the opening work in the Scenes of Private Life. First entitled Gloire et Malheur (Glory and Misfortune), this short novel was completed at Maffliers in October 1829 and published by Mame-Delaunay in 1830. The idea for the story came from the haberdashery business run by the Sallambiers on the maternal side of Balzac's family. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes From a Courtesan's Life, And, the Government Clerks On the whole, I should put this book a little below Balzac's very best, but in the forefront of his average work. Some I know have rated it very highly; but such a slightly glorified Alphonse as Rubempre is too disgusting a hero to be toler ated without even greater power that Balzac has here put forth, even though Esther to no small extent redeems him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modeste Mignon: And Other Stories Most of the minor characters are good: Butscha, a dith cult and, in any case, slightly improbable personage, is, in his own way, very good indeed. It was probably necessary for Balzac, in turning the usual scheme of the French novel upside down, to provide a rather timid hero for such a mas terful heroine; and it must be admitted that Ernest de la Briere is a rather preternaturally good young man. Still, he is not mawkish; and except that he should not have given Modeste quite such a valuable present, he behaves more like a gentleman in the full English sense than any other of Bal zac's heroes.
