I would bespeak an indulgent criticism for these verses, on the plea that a writer of ballads is not bound to achieve a high poetic flight. I conceive that the cadence of metre will of itself do something to heighten the effect of a striking narrative; and that, for this reason alone, it is worth while to versify a tale which one would have to abide in the memory and heart of the reader. Several possibilities suggest themselves. He may have borrowed Black-letter sheets from a wide circle of friends; or he may have rented a house whose owner had papered the walls with them. It will be remem bered that at Gloucester, in 1635, John Aubrey (brief Lives, ii. 249) saw the engraved description of Sir Philip Sidney's funeral doing duty as a chimney-piece.
