Book excerpt: Getting food, water, and services to the millions who live in the world's few dozen megacities is one of the twenty-first century's most formidable challenges. This innovative history traces nearly a century in the life of the megacity of Manila to show how it grew and what sustained it. Focusing on the city's key commodities-rice, produce, fish, fowl, meat, milk, flour, coffee-Daniel F. Doeppers explores their complex interconnections, the changing ecology of the surrounding region, and the social fabric that weaves together farmers, merchants, transporters, storekeepers, and door-to-door vendors.

Book Synopsis Theatre and Music in Manila and the Asia Pacific, 1869-1946 by : meLê yamomo
Download or read book Theatre and Music in Manila and the Asia Pacific, 1869-1946 written by meLê yamomo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the intersection between sound and modernity in dramatic and musical performance in Manila and the Asia-Pacific between 1869 and 1948. During this period, tolerant political regimes resulted in the globalization of capitalist relations and the improvement of transcontinental travel and worldwide communication. This allowed modern modes of theatre and music consumption to instigate the uniformization of cultural products and processes, while simultaneously fragmenting societies into distinct identities, institutions, and nascent nation-states. Taking the performing bodies of migrant musicians as the locus of sound, this book argues that the global movement of acoustic modernities was replicated and diversified through its multiple subjectivities within empire, nation, and individual agencies. It traces the arrival of European travelling music and theatre companies in Asia which re-casted listening into an act of modern cultural consumption, and follows the migration of Manila musicians as they engaged in the modernization project of the neighboring Asian cities.
Book Synopsis The Huk Rebellion by : Benedict J. Kerkvliet
Download or read book The Huk Rebellion written by Benedict J. Kerkvliet and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2002-03-07 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly available with an updated bibliographic essay, this highly acclaimed work explores the Huk rebellion, a momentous peasant revolt in the Philippines. Unlike prevailing top-down analysis, Kerkvliet seeks to understand the movement from the point of view of its participants and sympathizers. He argues that seeing a peasant revolt through the eyes of those who rebelled explains and clarifies the actions of people who otherwise might appear irrational. Drawing on a rich array of documents and in-depth interviews with peasants and rebel leaders, the author provides definitive answers to the causes of the rebellion, the goals of the rebels, and the process of resistance.
