Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I am here. You will never be alone. We are dancing for you.” So begins Cutcha Risling Baldy’s deeply personal account of the revitalization of the women’s coming-of-age ceremony for the Hoopa Valley Tribe. At the end of the twentieth century, the tribe’s Flower Dance had not been fully practiced for decades. The women of the tribe, recognizing the critical importance of the tradition, undertook its revitalization using the memories of elders and medicine women and details found in museum archives, anthropological records, and oral histories. Deeply rooted in Indigenous knowledge, Risling Baldy brings us the voices of people transformed by cultural revitalization, including the accounts of young women who have participated in the Flower Dance. Using a framework of Native feminisms, she locates this revival within a broad context of decolonizing praxis and considers how this renaissance of women’s coming-of-age ceremonies confounds ethnographic depictions of Native women; challenges anthropological theories about menstruation, gender, and coming-of-age; and addresses gender inequality and gender violence within Native communities.

Book excerpt: Visible throughout the entire Los Angeles Basin, Mt. Baldy, originally known as Mt. San Antonio and affectionately referred to as "Old Baldy," is the tallest peak in the majestic San Gabriel Mountains. Approximately 49 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, Mt. Baldy first gained popularity during the Great Hiking Era--the decades before and after the turn of the 20th century--when visitors traveled up San Antonio Canyon to hike, camp, fish, and hunt. Before outdoor recreation became fashionable, the resource-rich area was a haven for gold miners and businessmen who sought their fortunes in the steep and rugged terrain. Despite natural disasters in recent decades, the mountain community continues to receive record numbers of visitors to its rustic lodges, state-of-the-art ski facilities, and superb hiking areas. The community of Mt. Baldy Village, once known as Camp Baldy, is a quaint and picturesque locale that includes a post office, volunteer fire department, school, church, visitor's center, and resort accommodations.

Book excerpt: Lauded for gallantry at Antietam and demoted for insubordination after Fredericksburg, Major General William "Baldy" Smith remains a controversial figure of the Civil War. His criticism of the Union high command made him unpopular with both peers and superiors. Yet his insight as an officer and an engineer enabled him to offer effective solutions to challenges faced by fellow generals. In this first comprehensive biography, Smith emerges as a field commander with deep concern for his men and a fearless critic of the failures of the Union generalship, who was recognized for a strategic perspective that helped save Federal armies.

Book excerpt: With a successful career as a singing teacher for more than a quarter of a century, author Colin Baldy has been frustrated by the lack of suitable reading materials aimed specifically at the student of the singing voice. Therefore, he has provided a useful resource with The Student Voice. Primarily designed for undergraduate and graduate level students, the book will also benefit mature singers, teachers, and those already in the singing profession who simply want to keep their technique and knowledge alive. The Student Voice includes some physiology, with suggested exercises and methods for developing the correct use of the student's physical instrument. It suggests a suitable repertoire to run alongside the exercises and contains a large amount of trouble-shooting advice. The author's intention is to encourage singing students and to assist them in avoiding common pitfalls. The book will also help singers identify vocal problems which they may already have developed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Nicolette Hahn Niman sets out to debunk just about everything you think you know . . . She’s not trying to change your mind; she’s trying to save your world.”—Los Angeles Times “Elegant, strongly argued.”—The Atlantic (named a “Best Food Book”) As the meat industry—from small-scale ranchers and butchers to sprawling slaughterhouse operators—responds to COVID-19, the climate threat, and the rise of plant-based meats, Defending Beef delivers a passionate argument for responsible meat production and consumption–in an updated and expanded new edition. For decades it has been nearly universal dogma among environmentalists that many forms of livestock—goats, sheep, and others, but especially cattle—are Public Enemy Number One. They erode soils, pollute air and water, damage riparian areas, and decimate wildlife populations. As recently as 2019, a widely circulated Green New Deal fact sheet even highlighted the problem of “farting cows.” But is the matter really so clear-cut? Hardly. In Defending Beef, Second Edition, environmental lawyer turned rancher Nicolette Hahn Niman argues that cattle are not inherently bad for the earth. The impact of grazing can be either negative or positive, depending on how livestock are managed. In fact, with proper oversight, livestock can play an essential role in maintaining grassland ecosystems by performing the same functions as the natural herbivores that once roamed and grazed there. With more public discussions and media being paid to connections between health and diet, food and climate, and climate and farming—especially cattle farming, Defending Beef has never been more timely. And in this newly revised and updated edition, the author also addresses the explosion in popularity of “fake meat” (both highly processed “plant-based foods” and meat grown from cells in a lab, rather than on the hoof). Defending Beef is simultaneously a book about big issues and the personal journey of the author, who continues to fight for animal welfare and good science. Hahn Niman shows how dispersed, grass-based, smaller-scale farms can and should become the basis of American food production.
