Book Synopsis Affect, Emotions and Power in Development Studies Theory and Practice by : Tanya Jakimow
Download or read book Affect, Emotions and Power in Development Studies Theory and Practice written by Tanya Jakimow and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advances new research directions that explore the emotional and affective dimensions of development. Going beyond merely placing emotion and/or affect as the objects of study, it examines ‘development’ in fresh ways through analysis of its affective dimensions. Affect and emotions are complicit in the structural conditions that sustain material and social inequalities and deprivations, and critical to the potential for disruption and transformation. The chapters in this volume demonstrate how affect and emotions enrich understandings of, or rethink power configurations in development while being attentive to forces of destabilization and creativity. They unravel the subtleties of power in development from micro to macro scales, enhance the understanding of development as an inherently political process, and highlight the possibilities for resistance and transformation. The book introduces new lines of enquiry to understand power in development theory and practice, grounded in rich empirical research from across Asia and Australia and will be a valuable resource for students and researchers of anthropology, third world studies, development studies and development theory. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Third World Quarterly.

Book excerpt: Philippine Folk Literature: The Proverbs is Volume VI of the author's eight-volume Philippine Folk Literature Series. The present collection focuses on the proverb--a terse didactic statement, handed down through generations, the wisdom of many and the wit of one. It ordinarily suggests a course of action or passes judgment on a situation. This work is a national collection of Philippine proverbs--a putting together of available proverbs from allover the country, listed alphabetically, in dictionary fashion, according to the most significant word in their English translation. Thirty-six Philippine languages are represented in this collection. As an introduction to the collection, the essay Philippine Proverb Lore, is reprinted, to provide readers with an overview. For each entry, the following kinds of information are given: (1) the English translation, (2) the proverb in its original Philippine language or languages, (3) language label and source (collector/collections); and (4) foreign parallels, if any.

Widely spoken throughout the Philippines, Ilokano is the dominant language of most of the provinces of Northern Luzon and is used as a lingua franca by non-Ilokano speakers in this area. Settlers have also carried the language to Mindoro and to several areas in Mindanao. The Ilokano dictionary was developed under the auspices of the Pacific and Asian Linguistics Institute (PALI) of the University of Hawaii, and accompanies the Ilokano reference grammar by the same author as well as Ilokano Lessons by Bernabe, Lapid, and Sibayan. The dictionary contains some 7,000 Ilokano entries. Many of the entries are illustrated by Ilokano sentences to clarify usage.
