Book excerpt: Bal Folk was created from a selection tunes published as Massif Central Volumes 1 and 2. It has been completely revised and errors found in the original have been corrected. Copyright tunes had to be removed but a number of original compositions by Trevor Upham and Chris Shaw have been added. Trevor and Chris live in England but write tunes in the central French style. Trevor lived for many years in France and was very involved with the folk dance scene there, he writes some superb tunes which deserve to be better known. This book will be of interest to anyone who enjoys playing French music, or playing for French dancing. The tunes are suitable for melodeon, fiddle and accordion and many will fit within the range of bagpipes and hurdy gurdy. It contains the usual mix of mazurkas, valses, scottisches, two and three time bourrees, and polkas that are encountered at a Bal Folk in France. The majority of the tunes in this book come from the centre of France, the Berry, Bourbonnais and Auvergne regions, where there is a strong tradition of hurdy gurdy and bagpipe music. In addition, there are a few examples of tunes for other dances that one can occasionally encounter, for example the five time waltz from Alsace. It should not be seen as an academic work, but a useful source of good tunes. Also included are a number of tunes written in the French style by Trevor Upham and Chris Shaw, two musicians playing French music in England. In France the usual tuning used for a two row melodeon is C/G, whilst in England we prefer G/D. The melodeon in C/G tuning fits very well with the Auvergne tuned hurdy gurdy and bagpipes in C, when playing in C and G major. This is an instrument combination often used in France. Book excerpt: Ukrainian dancer and choreographer Serge Lifar (1905-86) is recognized both as the modernizer of French ballet in the twentieth century and as the keeper of the flame of the classical tradition upon which the glory of French ballet was founded. Having migrated to France from Russia in 1923 to join Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, Lifar was appointed star dancer and ballet director at the Paris Op�ra in 1930. Despite being rather unpopular with the French press at the start of his appointment, Lifar came to dominate the Parisian dance scene-through his publications as well as his dancing and choreography-until the end of the Second World War, reaching the height of his fame under the German occupation of Paris (1940-44). Rumors of his collaborationism having remained inconclusive throughout the postwar era, Lifar retired in 1958. This book not only reassess Lifar's career, both aesthetically and politically, but also provides a broader reevaluation of the situation of dance-specifically balletic neoclassicism-in the first half of the twentieth century. The Fascist Turn in the Dance of Serge Lifar is the first book not only to discuss the resistance to Lifar in the French press at the start of his much-mythologized career, but also the first to present substantial evidence of Lifar's collaborationism and relate it to his artistic profile during the preceding decade. In examining the political significance of the critical discussion of Lifar's body and technique, author Mark Franko provides the ground upon which to understand the narcissistic and heroic images of Lifar in the 1930s as prefiguring the role he would play in the occupation. Through extensive archival research into unpublished documents of the era, police reports, the transcript of his postwar trial and rarely cited newspaper columns Lifar wrote, Franko reconstructs the dancer's political activities, political convictions, and political ambitions during the Occupation.

Book excerpt: This volume contains Crimean Tatar folklore texts that had been collected by the noted Hungarian Turkologist Ignác Kúnos during World War I, specifically from Russian Muslim prisoners of war in Hungarian camps. The collection consists of 38 fairy tales and a partial version of the Chora-batir epic. The tales featuring padishahs, their sons, and naive boys, exhibit the enchanting diversity of Crimean Tatar folk imagination. The introductory study delves into linguistic aspects, then the next chapter explicates the transcription system’s phonetic nuances. It is followed by an English translation, which reflects Kúnos’ Hungarian translation in a much ameliorated and revised form. A sizable trilingual (Crimean Tatar–English–Russian) glossary follows covering the entire Crimean Tatar material collected by Kúnos. It becomes evident that dialectal features cannot be sharply separated across the tales since the Crimean dialects are highly mixed in character, distinguished only by the different proportions of northern (Kipchak) and southern (Oghuz) elements. The present volume, while preserving valuable pieces of Crimean Tatar folklore and offering linguistic insights, also opens a unique window into a distant time and culture.
