Book Synopsis Mario Lavista by : Ana R. Alonso-Minutti
Download or read book Mario Lavista written by Ana R. Alonso-Minutti and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Composer, pianist, editor, writer, and pedagogue Mario Lavista (1943-2021) was a central figure of the cultural and artistic scene in Mexico and one of the leading Ibero-American composers of his generation. His music is often described as evocative and poetic, noted for his meticulous attention to timbre and motivic permutation, and his creative trajectory was characterized by its intersections with the other arts, particularly poetry and painting. Understanding analysis as an affective practice, this study explores the intertextual connections between the multiple texts-musical or otherwise-that are present in Lavista's music. It argues that, through adopting an interdisciplinary and transhistorical approach to music composition, Lavista forged a cosmopolitan imaginary to challenge imposed stereotypes of what Mexican music should sound like. This imaginary becomes a strategy of resistance against imperialist agendas placed upon postcolonial peripheries. Departing from traditional biographical and chronological frameworks that exalt masters and masterworks, this book offers a nuanced, personal narrative informed by conversations with composers, performers, artists, choreographers, poets, writers, and filmmakers. Implementing an innovative mosaic of methodologies, from archival work, to musical and intertextual analysis, oral history, and (auto)ethnography, this book is the first to offer a contextual framing of Lavista's career within a panoramic view of contemporary music practices in Mexico during the past fifty years"--

This comparative study examines the strategies of re-politicization and socialization employed in contemporary Argentine film and theatre produced in the wake of the 1976-83 dictatorship. It focuses on the socio-political facets of performance across a range of films and dramatic compositions. The book highlights the manner in which the trope of performance represents the place in which film and theatre experiment with generic and mediatic hybridization. Each chapter takes as its point of departure a series of politically motivated appropriations made by cinema and theatre from neighboring genres/media. In each case, genre is shown to take on the role of mediator between competing aesthetic forms: between aesthetics and politics; aesthetic performance and social performance; reality and fiction; postmodern heterogeneity and an increasingly present modern anxiety regarding the perceived need to preserveartistic purity/autonomy, thus restoring what is specific to theatre and cinema's type of communication. Philippa Page has managed the cultural programme at the Maison de l'Argentine in the Cité Internationale Universitaire, Paris and continues to research in the field of Argentine performance studies.

Book Synopsis Modern Dance in France (1920-1970) by : Jacqueline Robinson
Download or read book Modern Dance in France (1920-1970) written by Jacqueline Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was indeed an adventure for those pioneers in France who struggled for the recognition of the new-born dance of the twentieth century - from the free dance of Isadora Duncan, through the absolute dance of Mary Wigman, to the modern dance of Martha Graham. Jacqueline Robinson has lived at the heart of this adventure, sharing the aspirations of a whole generation who often suffered from the lack of understanding of an establishment more inclined towards classical ballet. From the breaking of the soil in the twenties, to the flowering in the sixties, here is a chronicle of the changing landscape of French dance. Here is the story of those men and women, ploughmen and poets, rebels and visionaries - the recollection of those events that made it possible for dance as an art form in Western countries to rise again as a fundamental expression of the human spirit.
