Book excerpt: In the style of Nudge or The Spirit Level - a groundbreaking book that will change the way you look at the world. Tina Rosenberg has spent her career tackling some of the world's hardest problems. The Haunted Land, her searing book on how Eastern Europe faced the crimes of Communism, was awarded both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in the US. In Join the Club, she identifies a brewing social revolution that is changing the way people live, based on harnessing the positive force of peer pressure. Her stories of peer power in action show how it has reduced teen smoking in the United States, made villages in India healthier and more prosperous, helped minority students get top grades in college calculus, and even led to the fall of Slobodan Milosevic. She tells how creative social entrepreneurs are starting to use peer pressure to accomplish goals as personal as losing weight and as global as fighting terrorism. Inspiring and engrossing, Join the Club explains how we can better our world through humanity's most powerful and abundant resource: our connections with one another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criminological research has largely neglected the possibility that positive peer influence is a potentially powerful source of social control. Quantitative methods tease out cause, effect, and spuriousness in the relationship between peer delinquency and personal delinquency, but these methods do little or nothing to reveal how and why peers might influence each other toward--or away from--deviance. Costello and Hope take a first step toward uncovering the mechanisms of peer influence, drawing on quantitative and qualitative data collected from two convenience samples of university students. Their quantitative analyses showed that positive peer influence occurs most frequently among those who associate with the most deviant peers and self-report the most deviance, contrary to predictions drawn from social learning theories. Their qualitative data revealed a variety of methods of negative influence, including encouraging deviant behavior for others' amusement, a motive for peer influence never before reported in the literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Connections: Geography and Drug Addiction Geography involves making connections – connections in our world among people and places, cultures, human activities, and natural processes. It involves understa- ing the relationships and ‘connections’ between seemingly disparate or unrelated ideas and between what is and what might be. Geography also involves connecting with people. When I rst encountered an extraordinarily vibrant, intelligent, and socially engaged scientist at a private d- ner several years ago, I was immediately captivated by the intensity of her passion to understand how and why people become addicted to drugs, and what could be done to treat or prevent drug addiction. Fortunately, she was willing to think beyond the bounds of her own discipline in her search for answers. Our conversation that evening, which began with her research on fundamental biochemical processes of drug addiction in the human body, evolved inevitably to an exploration of the ways in which research on the geographical context of drug addiction might contribute to the better understanding of etiology of addiction, its diffusion, its interaction with geographically variable environmental, social, and economic factors, and the strategies for its treatment and prevention. This fascinating woman, I soon learned, was Nora Volkow, the Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse as well as the granddaughter of Leon Trotsky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of social media and its inherent ability to make people's words "go viral," abundant opportunities exist for false prophecies to flourish in the church. People are drawn to these "prophets" to ease anxiety, fulfill wants, or know the future. But when these men and women aren't speaking God's words, they can lead people astray and turn their eyes from our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. In Understanding Prophetic Ministry, author Tewodros Assefa Damtew addresses this danger by highlighting the benchmarks and characteristics of the true prophets of God and providing practical instructions on how to deal, in love, with the false prophets that will arise these days. Pastor Damtew bases his words on biblical truth and rigorous theological study, and his teaching provides transformative insights and guidance to all those interested in learning more about prophecy and other ministerial gifts in the church. With topics ranging from the restoration of the prophetic ministry to the infiltration of false prophets, this is a must-read for Bible students, visionaries, church leaders, and the laity. Relevant, timely, and straightforward, Understanding Prophetic Ministry will be a valuable resource in Bible colleges and seminaries, church and personal libraries, and small group studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Hill was born in a small town outside Pittsburgh called Whitaker. The part of Whitaker that he grew up in was a project or a low-income housing development. The area was closely knit but riddled with opportunities to commit crimes and engage in drug-related usage or distribution. William became involved in all the aforementioned activities. However, there were people who instilled in him the ingredients for success: Mrs. Glenn (third-grade teacher), his mother (who ended up graduating from the University of Pittsburgh), and a counselor named Mr. Randolph. He ended up graduating from Howard University in Washington, D.C. In college, he studied the concepts that taught that success was a self-fulfilling prophecy. He learned from people like Marva Collins that anybody can change and achieve if they have the right ingredients. William started an agency called NU Direction, and this book represents the transferable concepts taught in those youth and family court-ordered sessions over an eighteen-year period. He has witnessed thousands of young people who, like himself, were able to rise above false expectations and become law-abiding citizens.

Book excerpt: Help Your Daughter Resist Peer Pressure– Even When You’re Not Around. A national survey in 2001 indicated that in the U.S. one-fourth of the high school seniors have problems with drugs and alcohol, nearly two-thirds of teenagers experiment with drugs before finishing high school, and fifty-six percent of seventeen-year-olds know at least one drug dealer at school. Studies also indicate that when a girl chooses to use substances, peer pressure is the biggest reason why. Many parents believe the best they can do is to teach their daughters right from wrong and hope for the best. But there is more that you can do. Because while peer pressure may be the biggest influence for girls who choose to use substances, parental involvement is the single most important factor for those who decide not to. The dangers of substance abuse can actually bring you and your daughter closer. Whether you want to help your daughter resist the overwhelming pressures to drink, smoke, and use drugs; have discovered or suspect that your daughter may be using substances; or want to help her develop a strong and positive identity in response to negative peer pressure, this book shows how the lure of today’s teen “party” culture puts you in your most powerful position ever to connect with and influence your daughter.
