This book was released on 2009-07-14 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is suf?cient need to document all the available data on biological control of rice diseases in a small volume. Part of this need rests on the global importance of rice to human life. In the ?rst chapter, I have tried to show that rice is indeed life for most people in Asia and shortages in production and availability can lead to a food crisis. While rice is cultivated in most continents, biological disease management attains special relevance to rice farmers of Africa, Asia, and also perhaps, Latin America. These farmers are resource-poor and might not be able to afford the cost of expensive chemical treatments to control devastating rice pathogens such as Magnaporthe oryzae (blast), Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (bacterial leaf blight), Rhizoctonia solani (sheath blight) and the virus, rice tungro disease. In an earlier volume that I developed under the title, Biological Control of Crop Diseases (Dekker/CRC Publishers, 2002), I included transgenic crops generated for the management of plant pathogens as biological control under the umbrella of a broad de?nition. Dr Jim Cook who wrote the Foreword for the volume lauded the inclusion of transgenic crops and induced systemic resistance (ISR) as a positive trend toward acceptance of host plant resistance as part of biocontrol. I continue to subscribe to this view.

With the new technologies such as high-throughput genome sequencing and integrated "-omis" methods applied in rice researches, great advancements have been made. This book was aimed to show a glance of new advancements in the international rice researches. The first section of the book introduced rice cultivation and production. As core sections of the book, the second and third sections introduced physiological and genetic mechanisms on grain quality and biotic and abiotic stress resistance as well as breeding. In the last section, we introduced new technologies such as chromatin immunoprecipitation, integrated "-omis" methods, and bistatic interferometry technology in rice research.

Book Synopsis Inheritance of Resistance to Rice Bacterial Leaf Blight by : Innocent Habarurema
Download or read book Inheritance of Resistance to Rice Bacterial Leaf Blight written by Innocent Habarurema and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacterial leaf blight of rice, caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv.oryzae, is a vascular and devastating disease of irrigated lowland and rainfed rice, Oryza sativa L. It occurs in form of complete wilting and death of affected leaves. It is widespread throughout several rice growing countries of Asia, Australia, America and Africa, contributing to substantial yield losses of up to 50%. The use of resistant cultivars is the cost-effective, environmentally-friendly and sustainable way to control the rice bacterial leaf blight among resource-poor farmers. However, detailed information on pathogen diversity in Uganda is not available. Furthermore, the genetic mechanism for resistance carried by the germplasm assembled in Uganda is not yet elucidated. The current study seeks therefore to determine the nature of inheritance of resistance to bacterial leaf blight in rice under pathogen races evolved in Ugandan environments to subsequently establish a better breeding strategy.

Book Synopsis Disease Resistance and Susceptibility Genes to Bacterial Blight of Rice by : Frank White
Download or read book Disease Resistance and Susceptibility Genes to Bacterial Blight of Rice written by Frank White and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a valuable resource for understanding the complex processes controlling yield and value-added traits. Bacterial blight (BB) is a vascular disease of rice, caused by strains of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and provides insight, both practical and basic, into the concepts of susceptibility and resistance. Basic knowledge has been empirically and, more recently, intentionally exploited for broad and durable resistance to the disease. Bacterial blight involves representatives of most classes of resistance genes (R genes) and pathways for basal plant immunity. The study of BB also revealed novelties not observed in other models, possibly due to the long history of rice cultivation and the constant disease pressure. Conspicuous are the recessive R genes that target the notorious type III Transcription Activator-like effectors (TALes) of Xoo. Results indicate that pathogen and host are currently in a battle over a small patch of ground involving TALes function. At the same time, analyses of rice disease physiology are adding to a growing body of knowledge for plant disease processes and to how these processes are intertwined with disease susceptibility. The basic processes of BB present rich targets for the rapid advances in genome editing.
Book Synopsis Role of Guttation Fluid in the Spread of Bacterial Blight of Rice by : Raj Kiran
Download or read book Role of Guttation Fluid in the Spread of Bacterial Blight of Rice written by Raj Kiran and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern epidemiology relies heavily on quantifying biological phenomena and their relationships with the environment and other factors. Guttation is a physiological phenomenon resulting in oozing of drops of xylem sap on the tips or margins of leaves (hydathodes) of some vascular plants. Many studies revealed that this pathogen suspended in the water droplets gain entrance through the hydathodes into the vascular tissues. The water droplets secreted from hydathodes contain trace amounts of organic and inorganic substances that may serve as chemical attractants as well as nutrient sources for plant pathogenic bacteria. So this study overviewed the importance of this phenomenon in epidemiology of Bacterial blight of rice.
