Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated to 2007, including Canada’s war on terrorism. Is Canada really “a peaceable kingdom” with “an unmilitary people”? Nonsense, says Desmond Morton. This is a country that has been shaped, divided, and transformed by war — there is no greater influence in Canadian history, recent or remote. From the shrewd tactics of Canada’s First Nations to our troubled involvement in Somalia, from the Plains of Abraham to the deserts of Afghanistan, Morton examines our centuries-old relationship to war and its consequences. This updated edition also includes a new chapter on Canada’s place in the war on terrorism. A Military History of Canada is an engaging and informative chronicle of Canada at war, from one of the country’s finest historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, there have been intensive international negotiations to revise the law of the sea. These discussions culminated in the convening of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea in December 1973 and in four additional sessions up to September 1976. Whether the almost 150 participating states will be able to reach an accord in 1977 or later on, the myriad issues on their agenda is still uncertain. Two major issues have been the extension of coastal-state jurisdiction over resources and activities and the estblishment of an international regime to govern the exploitation of the deep seabed. Canada's most significant role has been that of a leader of the "coastal-state grouping," which has sought to expand states' jurisdiction over fisheries, seabed resources, scientific research, and pollution control within a 200-mile economic zone and sometimes beyond. A number of these Canadian policy goals have already been accepted by a large majority of the participants in the conference. In this role, Canada has found itsself opposed to many of its traditional allies among the developed nations with large fleets engaged in commerce in distant waters, and concerned about the traditional freedom of the high seas, and has aligned itself with the coastal developing nations of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The seven essays in this volume examine the development of Canadian policies on the major law of the sea issues and the outcome of the negotiations on them. In so doing, the studies have analysed Canada's dramatic seward expansion and involvement in one of teh most important United Nations Conferences.

This book was released on 2003-12-23 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 4 centuries ago, beginning with the British Empire under the reign of King Charles I. The europeans had the great conception of worldly expansion, and eventual trade. In realities , they were competing against other european nations that were on their way to world colonization. By the late 16th century, France and Spain had allready discovered, and colonised the north american continent. Britain, wanted into the game, and soon, began to sail, and eventually colonise areas, which would be beneficial to the empire. After a failed attempt to colonise the americas in the late 16th century, Britain, made another attempt in the early 17th century(1607) in the Jamestown Colony, which eventually succeeded, and lead to the first colony for Britain. Which in turn lead to the succession of the colonisation of New England. Britain, had something else in mind. The empire wanted to expand all the way to the Pacific Ocean, and to rid itself of the French fur traders, and Spanish colonists. The colonies of Virginia, and Massachusetts, were the most successful in agriculture, mercantilism, and shipping. King Charles I, allowed them to expand westward clear to where the eyes could see, and colonise it. However, Virginia gained the most control of land, and into the Ohio River Valley. There were a few squabbles between the Massachusetts colony, and Connecticut. The colony of Connecticut was granted the land to the 41st degree, by the 42nd degrees exactly west of the northern, and southern borders of Connecticut. The Ohio valley became an important area west of the Appalachain Mountains which was forbidden for exploration by the american colonists. But turned itself around by the mid 18th century in the French, and Indian War, in which Britain defeated the French, and took control of The Ohio River to the great lakes. The territory of Ohio played an important role during this episode. The French and Indian War,(1756) lead to the American Revolution, due to almost bankrupting Britain. The Western Reserve held to its own, and was left intact against the Virginia Military tracts in the southern end of the Ohio territory. But still the territory was not allowed to be explored, with the exception of the royal surveyors, supported by the British Army. Britain, decided to tax the colonies to repay the empire for the French and Indian War, in which lead to dissention. By April 17, 1775, in Lexington Massachusetts, the American Revolution had commenced, and did not know if they were going to survive. Besides, the colonies were fighting the mother country, who had the greatest army in the world. By the year 1783, Britain conceeded to a cease fire. The 13 colonies eventually were free, but the Declaration of Independance was actually in 1776. After a few failed attempts to colonise west of the Appalachains, the Western Reserve held to its own. But after the Revolutionary War, became a "White Elephant". It became a burden to the Connecticut taxpayers, and eventually began to sell the land. For the length of 120, by 67 miles wide, was sold to investors of the Connecticut land company.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in the geographic centre of British Columbia, the Lakes District is a unique region with a fascinating backstory. History Matters, the first book published by the Lakes District Museum Society in a half century, gives readers a glimpse into the lives of some of the heroes, villains, misfits, and everyday people who have in the past called this region home. In 2018, the Lakes District Museum Society began posting short stories and photographs about Burns Lake and surrounding communities on its social media page. This book is a compilation those posts, along with new material and never-before-seen photographs gleaned from the society’s archives. Want to know how an employee of the Yukon Telegraph spent his time? What was a tie-hacker’s life like? How did an unknown skier from Burns Lake make it to the 1932 Olympic Winter Games, and a man many feel was the real-life James Bond come to live in Colleymount? History Matters answers these and other important questions. In addition to touching and sometimes humorous tales of life in the Lakes District, readers of this book will encounter thrilling stories of murder, adventure, international intrigue, and even the supernatural. This collection is a valuable contribution to the community’s history, and one that will fascinate anyone interested in the area, its past, or the European colonization of Western Canada.
