Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tangata Whenua: A History presents a rich narrative of the Māori past from ancient origins in South China to the twenty-first century, in a handy paperback format. The authoritative text is drawn directly from the award-winning Tangata Whenua: An Illustrated History; the full text of the big hardback is available in a reader-friendly edition, ideal for students and for bedtime reading, and a perfect gift for those whose budgets do not stretch to the illustrated edition. Maps and diagrams complement the text, along with a full set of references and the important statistical appendix. Tangata Whenua: An Illustrated History was published to widespread acclaim in late 2014. This magnificent history has featured regularly in the award lists: winner of the 2015 Royal Society Science Book Prize, shortlisted for the international Ernest Scott Prize, winner of the Te Kōrero o Mua (History) Award at the Ngā Kupu ora Aotearoa Māori Book Awards, and Gold in the Pride in Print Awards. The importance of this history to New Zealand cannot be overstated. Māori leaders emphatically endorsed the book, as have reviewers and younger commentators. They speak of the way Tangata Whenua draws together different strands of knowledge – from historical research through archaeology and science to oral tradition. They remark on the contribution this book makes to evolving knowledge, describing it as ‘a canvas to paint the future on’. And many comment on the contribution it makes to the growth of understanding between the people of this country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealand appeared relatively late on the general tourist map of the 19th century. Famous for its exotic flora and fauna, a visible native population, and women's suffrage, it also drew American tourists to its shores. How did American travelers perceive New Zealand and its society? Very few travel accounts by American women were published in this period, but these historical documents offer subjective accounts of the author's time and present individual experiences and views on New Zealand.

Book Synopsis The Making of New Zealanders by : Ron Palenski
Download or read book The Making of New Zealanders written by Ron Palenski and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the development of a sense of national identity in a British colony, this highly authoritative work is a valuable addition to the literature in New Zealand. By looking at the onset of home-grown shipping, railway, and telegraph networks as well as at the Maori and kiwi experiences, not to mention the emergence of rugby teams, this book accounts for how transplanted Britons, and others, turned themselves into New Zealanders—a distinct group of people with their own songs and sports, symbols and opinions, political traditions, and sense of self. Tracing markers in popular culture, political processes, and public events, this informative and thrilling history focuses on the forging of a distinctive new culture and society.
Book Synopsis Exploring the History of New Zealand Astronomy by : Wayne Orchiston
Download or read book Exploring the History of New Zealand Astronomy written by Wayne Orchiston and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 707 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Orchiston is a foremost authority on the subject of New Zealand astronomy, and here are the collected papers of his fruitful studies in this area, including both those published many years ago and new material. The papers herein review traditional Maori astronomy, examine the appearance of nautical astronomy practiced by Cook and his astronomers on their various stopovers in New Zealand during their three voyagers to the South Seas, and also explore notable nineteenth century New Zealand observatories historically, from significant telescopes now located in New Zealand to local and international observations made during the 1874 and 1882 transits of Venus and the nineteenth and twentieth century preoccupation of New Zealand amateur astronomers with comets and meteors. New Zealand astronomy has a truly rich history, extending from the Maori civilization in pre-European times through to the years when explorers and navigators discovered the region, up to pioneering research on the newly emerging field of radio astronomy during WWII and in the immediate post-war years. A complete survey of a neglected but rich national astronomical history, this does the subject full and comprehensive justice.

Book Synopsis OECD Economic Surveys: New Zealand 2024 by : OECD
Download or read book OECD Economic Surveys: New Zealand 2024 written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a strong recovery from the pandemic, the New Zealand economy has slowed, with higher interest rates weighing on housing construction, and inflation undermining purchasing power and consumption. Monetary policy has tightened significantly since late 2021 and proved efficient at reining in inflation. Better control of government spending is needed to keep fiscal consolidation on track in the short run and restore fiscal space for ageing-related expenditures and the green transition in the long run. New Zealand also faces an investment gap in addressing the needs of a rapidly growing population. Improving competition policies and streamlining the regulatory environment would help revive productivity growth and lift living standards in the long run. As highlighted by the recent OECD PISA study, achievement in school education has declined markedly. Inequality remains high and attendance has dropped. There is an urgent need to improve the curriculum, reform teacher education and strengthen support to teachers and schools to deliver better education outcomes. Adapting to climate change will require maintaining high insurance coverage for climate-related losses as well as changes to land-use planning and a comprehensive long-run energy strategy. The green transition needs a more rigorous cost-benefit assessment of emission reduction options. Special features: Competition, School Education, Climate Change
