Book excerpt: Is your school prepared to deal with a crisis, whether it’s a hurricane, an earthquake, an explosion at a nearby chemical facility, an active shooter, or one of many other possibilities? Does your school have an up-to-date plan to deal with hazards of all sorts? Do teachers and other staff members know what to do in emergency situations to protect their students and themselves from harm? In this informative and comprehensive guide, school safety experts Amy Klinger and Amanda Klinger offer significant--and sometimes surprising--statistics on school safety, dispel common misunderstandings, and provide preK–12 school leaders with the specific information they need to prepare for and effectively respond to natural disasters, accidents, or violent events. Readers will learn how and why it is important to • Realistically assess threats and vulnerabilities. • Create and implement an emergency operations plan that follows government guidelines and best practices. • Decentralize authority and responsibility for crisis response. • Distinguish between three levels of “lockdown.” • Plan for short- and long-term recovery following an incident. • Make school safety an everyday component of school operations. At a time when schools at every level and in every community face the possibility of a crisis event, Keeping Students Safe Every Day equips leaders with the knowledge they need to give their students, staff members, parents, and the broader community confidence that their school knows what to do and makes safety a top priority.

Book Synopsis Lockdown Drills by : Jaclyn Schildkraut
Download or read book Lockdown Drills written by Jaclyn Schildkraut and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive resource on what lockdown drills are, why they are necessary, and how best to conduct them. The first book to offer a comprehensive examination of lockdown drills in K–12 schools, Lockdown Drills balances research findings with practical applications and implications. Schildkraut and Nickerson, school safety experts with complementary backgrounds in criminology and school psychology, review the historical precedents for lockdown drills, distinguish school lockdowns from other emergency procedures (such as active shooter drills), explain why they are conducted, present evidence-based research on their effectiveness, and describe how to conduct them according to best practices. Proponents of lockdown drills as a life-saving necessity, the authors help to bring much-needed standardization to how these drills are studied and conducted. The authors present common arguments for and against the inclusion of lockdown drills in emergency preparedness efforts, balancing their discussion of the perceptions and psychological impacts of lockdown drills with scholarly research on the extent to which lockdown drills improve how effectively individuals respond to a potential threat. Placing lockdown drills in the larger context of school safety and preparedness, they examine the broader implications for policymakers. Finally, they emphasize that drills, of which lockdowns are only one type, are just a part of the complex school safety puzzle. Ensuring that schools are safe places for students and educators begins long before a crisis occurs and continues through the days, weeks, and years of recovery following a crisis.
Book Synopsis The Real School Safety Problem by : Aaron Kupchik
Download or read book The Real School Safety Problem written by Aaron Kupchik and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schools across the U.S. look very different today than they did a generation ago. Police officers, drug-sniffing dogs, surveillance cameras, and high suspension rates have become commonplace. The Real School Safety Problem uncovers the unintended but far-reaching effects of harsh school discipline climates. Evidence shows that current school security practices may do more harm than good by broadly affecting the entire family, encouraging less civic participation in adulthood, and garnering future financial costs in the form of high rates of arrests, incarceration, and unemployment. This text presents a blueprint for reform that emphasizes problem-solving and accountability while encouraging the need to implement smarter school policies.Ê
Book Synopsis Going Back to School with District Worker’S Compensation and Employee Safety Programs by : Diane K. Schweitzer PhD RN CSRM
Download or read book Going Back to School with District Worker’S Compensation and Employee Safety Programs written by Diane K. Schweitzer PhD RN CSRM and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-09-07 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When school administrators think of school safety, they frequently think of student safety and security. School district administrators need also to be concerned about the safety of all adult workers including certified and classified employees e.g. administrators, teachers, secretaries, custodians, foodservice workers, nurses, administrators, bus drivers, maintenance personnel and others. Losses from injuries to employees result in disruption of the educational process, lost days from work increased insurance premiums and consequent loss of funding for core educational initiatives. Injuries can diminish in frequency and severity or be avoided almost entirely if administrators implement health and safety systems. The cost of providing medical care to injured employees establishes baseline data on which worker compensation premiums are assessed. Administrators could reinvest costs saved in workers compensation insurance premiums into educational programs for the direct benefit of students. A comprehensive safety system that confirms administration commitment to a safe working environment assures management commitment as a legal and ethical responsibility, promotes employee involvement, pinpoints and eliminates potential hazards, and encourages employees to prevent potential harm to other employees, teaching staff, and students. This text focuses on developing a successful workers compensation program and safety system for school district employees. The models and strategies may be adapted for use in school districts for reducing school injuries. School district administrators are frequently forced to do more with less funding, particularly considering the requirement to implement many unfunded mandates from state and federal governments. Dollars saved from improved worker safety and reduction of insurance premiums may directly benefit educational initiatives in school districts. Primarily, the funds for educating students may originate from saved workers compensation dollars.
