Book excerpt: Margaret Mahler was from a young age intrigued by the theories of Sigmund Freud and Hungarian psychoanalysts such as Sandor Ferenzci, with whom she became acquainted while a student in Budapest. Forced to flee Europe and rising anti–Semitism, Margaret and her husband, Paul, came to the United States in 1938. It was after this move that Mahler performed her most significant research and developed concepts such as the ground-breaking theory of separation-individuation, an idea which was given credence by Mahler’s own relationship with her father. This volume details the life and work of Margaret Mahler focusing on her life’s ambition—her psychoanalytical work. Her experiences with the Philadelphia Institute and her definitive research through the Masters Children’s Clinic are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Ember Lane' is a captivating work by Sheila Kaye-Smith, an English writer known for her numerous novels depicting life in her native rural Sussex and Kent in the English regional tradition. Excerpt from 'Ember Lane' "In days gone by the only way from Woodhorn to Potcommon was down Ember Lane as far as Four Legged Crouch and then up the hill past Egypt Farm to what is now the cross-roads by the market place. The road had no doubt been made after the manner of most Sussex roads, by carts and cattle moving from farm to farm."

Book excerpt: A cast of thousands, despicable villains and an unexpected reunion with disastrous consequences! ENGLAND 1937: 4000 child refugees from The Spanish Civil War are due to arrive at Southampton Docks . . . Sixteen-year-old aspiring doctor, Letitia, is determined to help with the rescue effort. Most of the children are taken to a camp, north of the town but some under the 'care' of a teacher called Easton Fitzgerald are billeted at Nettlefield Grange Orphanage. Baby is sure the Blackshirts are putting kids in peril again – have they jumped from the frying pan into the fire?Baby and the other Wonder Girls must work out what the fascists are really up to, and to prevent a Nazi invasion, persuade Letitia to value what she's actually good at. “This sequel is astounding! I read The Wonder Girls in 2019 and was floored by the plots and the characters. A diverse group of girls find family together within Nettleford(?) Orphanage. All from different backgrounds and experiences, these girls come together to fight a common enemy, Hitler’s Blackshirts. The town seems to be crawling with these Hitler supporters and though The Wonder Girls got rid of a few, The Wonder Girls Resist will see a new plot unfold and familiar trusted friends be doubted. New characters are introduced and quickly become part of the gang, foiling small parts of a larger plan. Each chapter enlightens the reader to the plots unfolding and the plans being created, highlighting the bravery of each young child, whether a refugee or orphan. They all gather together and work for the greater good. The characters are wonderfully written, especially the courage of each girl. They learn about their own capabilities and skills, while helping each other out of dangerous and plot thickening situations! I really like JM Carr’s style of writing and feel that she has created a fast paced adventure, with plenty of twists, turns and turncoats to keep the reader guessing. I like the perspective of this book on WWII and the role that ordinary citizens played when faced with a Hitler supporter in their own community. Often books set during the wars focus on the Blitz, the resistance movement or Holocaust. This small community is rocked in a different way and I feel that many readers will experience this new perspective and it will raise some questions about Blackshirts and their role.” Erin Lyn Hamilton, myshelvesarefull.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1840s, a best-selling novel, 'Fanny Campbell, The Female Pirate Captain: A Tale of The Revolution' took the country by storm. It sold more than 75,000 copies and marked the first time that a book featured a literary heroine who took charge of her own life by dressing as a man and going to sea. Fanny Campbell inspired many young girls and women of the Nineteenth Century. Now it's time for a new generation to hear Fanny's tall-tale and be inspired by her bravado and daring. To the Americans she was a Hero Privateer--to the British, a Pirate! Fanny Campbell found herself in the midst of a revolution when the British Colonies in the new world revolted against the Crown. Witnessing such rebellious acts as the Boston Tea Party and the Battle of Bunker Hill, she came of age and fell in love during perilous times. When her intended was captured and imprisoned in Cuba's La Cabana Fortress, she took to the high seas disguised as a man, commandeered a British brig, and orchestrated a daring rescue. Fighting, Pirates, rough waters, and English enemies, she commandeered two more British merchant vessels and sent a notorious Pirate ship full of buccaneers into eternity just in time to help the newly-formed American Navy with her spoils.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J.M. Cohen Wrote That Yeats Was The Greatest Figure In English Poetry Since The Death Of Tennyson , And Ezra Pound, Who Once Went To Yeats To Learn How To Write Poetry, Wrote About Him : I Dare Say ... That Up To Date No One Has Shown Any Disposition To Supersede Him As The Best Poet In England Or Any Likelihood Of Doing So For Some Time... Yeats Is A Very Complex And Difficult Poet, Because There Is In Him A Curious Intermixture Of Romanticism, Realism, Mythology, Supernaturalism, Magic, Ocultism, Automatic Writing, Nationalism, Private Philosophy , And Even Prejudices. His Poems Are Very Compact, Allowing No Elaborations, And Leaving Gaps For The Reader To Imaginatively Fill Them Up, And Thus Making Them More Difficult. Great Explicators And Commentators Have, Of Course, Come Forward, But They Themselves, Sometimes, Are Either Difficult Or Not Enough. Therefore, The One Single Objective Of This Book Is To Introduce The Poet To The General Reader In An Easy Manner. To Give An Idea Of The Poet, As Many As Forty-One Poems, Selected From His Four Stages Of Poetic Development, Have Been Explained (And All Those Poems Have Been Quoted In Full). Yeats Had Also A Métier For Drama, And Had Been A Pioneer Of One Act Plays, And Wrote No Fewer Than Thirty Plays. And So Yeats Has Also Been Discussed As A Dramatist, And, In Addition, Eight Of His Plays Have Been Discussed At Some Length.
