Book Synopsis The Sufi Journey of Baba Rexheb by : Frances Trix
Download or read book The Sufi Journey of Baba Rexheb written by Frances Trix and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-09-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baba Rexheb, a Muslim mystic from the Balkans, founded the first Bektashi community in America. This is his life story and the story of his communities: the traditional Bektashi tekke in Albania where he first served, the displaced persons camps to which he escaped after the war, the centuries-old tekke in Cairo where he waited, and the Bektashi community that he founded in Michigan in 1954 and led until his passing in 1995. Baba Rexheb lived through the twentieth century, its wars, disruptions, and dislocations, but still at a profound level was never displaced. Through Bektashi stories, oral histories, and ethnographic experience, Frances Trix recounts the life and times of this modern Sufi leader. She studied with Baba Rexheb in his community for more than twenty years. As a linguistic anthropologist, she taped twelve years of their weekly meetings in Turkish, Albanian, and Arabic. She draws extensively on Baba's own words, as well as interactions at the Michigan Bektashi center, for a remarkable perspective on our times. You come to know Baba Rexheb and his gentle way of teaching through example and parable, poetry and humor. The book also documents the history of the 700-year-old Bektashi order in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the Balkans and Egypt and its transposition to America. It attests to the role of Sufi centers in Islamic community life and their interaction with people of other faiths.
Book Synopsis Baba and the Crew by : Bill Davis, Jr
Download or read book Baba and the Crew written by Bill Davis, Jr and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Baba and the Crew is a candid story of Bill Davis' challenges and triumphs as a single dad raising four children ages 3, 5, 7, and 9. Despite the naysayers who believed children belong with their mother, Bill demonstrates that love, compassion, and structure will produce well-rounded, socially conscious, responsible adults. Readers meet each member of the Crew and hear in their own words what it was like growing up in the strict, family-first, Davis household. With help from "the village," Sekou, Toussaint, Imani, and Naeemah are accomplished, socially-conscious adults, and continue to make Baba proud. "What makes Baba and the Crew special is that it dispels the myth of the absent Black father. It goes against the erroneous stereotypical notion that single-parent families, headed by Black fathers, can hold a family together." It shows the Black father has love, cares for, and has hopes and dreams for his family as much as any other culture." Bruce S. Morgan1st VP New Jersey State Conference NAACP "In our cultural climate of African American inequality, mass incarceration, and racism, Baba and The Crew is a great example to eradicate the myth of absentee or deadbeat African American fathers. Bill Davis has taken on his role as Baba, the Swahili term for father, with love, courage, and determination to raise and equip his children with the knowledge, compassion, and tools to thrive in society. Bill's story is one that needs to be highlighted more often in mass media." Dr. Randal Pinkett Chairman and CEO, BCT Partners and Co-author, Black Faces in White Places "In this revealing memoir, "Baba" Bill shares not only his parenthood journey, but he also demonstrates the extent to which childhood experiences, and the way we are parented, shape the way we decide to parent. Without rancor, recrimination, or braggadocio, Bill assesses, with great objectivity-and clarity, the generational parenting behaviors in his family he chose to emulate while rearing his own children. Bill did not elect single fatherhood, but when life dealt him those cards, he took up the "Baba" challenge with a loving, willing determination to do everything in his power to make sure he had a winning hand. While this memoir looks back at family history and moves forward toward the family's future, it is grounded solidly in the present lives of Baba and his Crew. This is not a parenting primer or "how-to" guide from an "expert" but rather an unflinchingly honest, self-effacing, and sometimes humorous, behind-the-scenes look at how this single father raised four children to be culturally centered, kind, aspirational, compassionate, critical thinking, self-reliant adults." Virginia DeBerry, NY Times Best-selling Author "I strongly endorse Prof. Bill Davis' book. He was my former undergraduate student at Rutgers College, and I had the great pleasure of calling him Bill "Black" Davis. He was a very good student and became an outstanding father and single parent to high achieving children. I remember seeing him, with his children, on the television show-Reading Rainbow, as he represented a strong role model as a Black father and single parent." Dr. Leonard L. Bethel, Professor Emeritus, Rutgers University, NJ "What always impressed me about Bill was his ability to advocate for others, and maintain his love and guidance for his five children. That balance is a role model for all single fathers." Ronald E. Bolandi Former Piscataway Twp. Superintendent of Schools "Bill Davis' story stands in stark contrast to the dominant narrative around black fathers. This book is an inspiration for all parents, and the advice that Brother Bill provides will help you raise your children to become strong adults." LeDerick Horne, Poet, Disability Activist

Book Synopsis Miracle of Love - Stories about Neem Karoli Baba by : Ram Dass
Download or read book Miracle of Love - Stories about Neem Karoli Baba written by Ram Dass and published by Neem Karoli Baba Ashram. This book was released on with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T he material in this volume is culled from over two thousand stories about Maharajji gathered during five years from more than one hundred devotees. To these devotees who shared their treasured memo ries, I wish to express my deep love and appreciation. Some of them felt that no book could or should be written about a being with qualities as vast, formless, and subtle as Maharajji’s, and yet they contributed their stories nevertheless. I honor them for this kindness and I hope that in my zeal to share experiences of Maharajji with others who were not fortu nate enough to have met him, I have not misused their trust. Some devotees tell me that stories told by other devotees are not fac tually accurate. I have no way of ascertaining the authenticity of any single story. All I can report is that those o f us who gathered the stories were impressed by the credibility of those of us who told the stories. Though the responsibility for this manuscript lies solely with me, I am delighted to acknowledge a lot o f loving help from my friends:
Book Synopsis Shantaram by : Gregory David Roberts
Download or read book Shantaram written by Gregory David Roberts and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2004-10-13 with total page 945 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on his own extraordinary life, Gregory David Roberts’ Shantaram is a mesmerizing novel about a man on the run who becomes entangled within the underworld of contemporary Bombay—the basis for the Apple + TV series starring Charlie Hunnam. “It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured.” An escaped convict with a false passport, Lin flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of Bombay, where he can disappear. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter the city’s hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere. As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city’s poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The search leads him to war, prison torture, murder, and a series of enigmatic and bloody betrayals. The keys to unlock the mysteries and intrigues that bind Lin are held by two people. The first is Khader Khan: mafia godfather, criminal-philosopher-saint, and mentor to Lin in the underworld of the Golden City. The second is Karla: elusive, dangerous, and beautiful, whose passions are driven by secrets that torment her and yet give her a terrible power. Burning slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison agonies, criminal wars and Bollywood films, spiritual gurus and mujaheddin guerrillas—this huge novel has the world of human experience in its reach, and a passionate love for India at its heart.

Book Synopsis The Latin American Short Story at its Limits by : Lucy Bell
Download or read book The Latin American Short Story at its Limits written by Lucy Bell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latin American short story has often been viewed in terms of its relation to orality, tradition and myth. But this desire to celebrate the difference of Latin American culture unwittingly contributes to its exoticization, failing to do justice to its richness, complexity and contemporaneity. By re-reading and re-viewing the short stories of Juan Rulfo, Julio Cortazar and Augusto Monterroso, Bell reveals the hybridity of this genre. It is at once rooted in traditional narrative and fragmented by modern experience; its residual qualities are revived through emergent forms. Crucially, its oral and mythical characteristics are compounded with the formal traits of modern, emerging media: photography, cinema, telephony, journalism, and cartoon art.

Book Synopsis Young Children and the Arts by : Carol Korn-Bursztyn
Download or read book Young Children and the Arts written by Carol Korn-Bursztyn and published by IAP. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young Children and the Arts: Nurturing Imagination and Creativity examines the place of the arts in the experiences of young and very young children at home and in out-of-home settings at school and in the community. There is great need for development of resources in the arts specifically designed to introduce babies and toddlers to participatory experiences in the visual arts, dance, music, and storytelling/theater. This book presents valuable guidelines for early childhood teachers, families, caregivers and community organizations. Young Children and the Arts presents a comprehensive approach to the arts that is aligned with early childhood developmentally appropriate practice and that combines an exploratory, materials-based approach with an aesthetic-education approach for children from birth to eight years of age. It addresses both how the arts are foundational to learning, and how teachers and parents can nurture young children’s developing imagination and creativity. The models presented emphasize a participatory approach, introducing young children to the arts through activities that call for engagement, initiative and creative activity. Additionally, Young Children and the Arts addresses the intersection of early childhood education and the arts—at points of convergence, and at moments of tension. The role of families and communities in developing and promoting arts suffused experiences for and with young children are addressed. Young Children and the Arts examines the role of innovative arts policy in supporting a broad-based early arts program across the diverse settings in which young children and their families live, work, and learn.
