Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aztec Land Having resolved to visit Mexico, the question first to be considered was how to do so in the most advantageous manner. Repairing to the office of Messrs. Raymond Whitcomb, in Boston, after a brief consultation with those experienced organizers of travel, the author handed the firm a check for the cost of a round trip to Mexico and back. On the following day he took his seat in a Pullman parlor car in Boston, to occupy the same section until his return from an excursion of ten thousand miles. A select party of ladies and gentlemen came together at the same time in the Fitchburg railroad station, most of whom were strangers to each other, but who were united by the same purpose. The traveler lives, eats, and sleeps in the vestibule train, while en route, in which he first embarks, until his return to the starting-point, a dining-car, with reading and writing rooms, also forming a part of the train. The visitor from the United States going by rail is impressed by the marked contrast between the monotonous, semi-arid plains of the North and the majestic ranges in the background of fertile plateaus which meet his gaze as he passes southward. At first, he is inclined to accept the description of an Ameri can soldier boy who said. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The White Conquerors: A Tale of Toltec and Aztec In the streets of the city the dancing feet of flow er-wreathed youths and maidens tripped noiselessly over the smooth cemented pavements; while their elders watched them, with approving smiles, from their curtained doorways, or the flat flower-gardened roofs, of their houses. Above all these scenes of peaceful merriment rose the gloomy pyramids of many temples, ever-present reminders of the cruel and bloody religion with which the whole fair land was cursed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pennsylvania Tour to Mexico: Affording Four Weeks in the Land of the Aztecs The Moor left his monument to Spain in the Alhambra, the Aztec his to Mexico in the pyramid at Cholula. The American who travels has been a hunter after the antique as well as warm weather in winter, and when he could combine the two his journey was altogether a pleasure trip; he found them both in a mild way on the peninsula of Florida, but the old Castle of San Marco, at St. Augustine, was the most ancient ruin - in fact, was almost the only one the weather was warm enough, excepting an occasional norther, and the territory of pleasure travel attractive though some what limited. Gradually travel was extended to Cuba, and at last when the great railways to Mexico were completed a veritable Egypt of antiquities was found, and an Italy of sunny skies without crossing the seas; tourists were content and their number increased greatly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aztec God, and Other Dramas The scene of this drama is laid in Mexico near the opening of the Fifteenth Century, just when the Aztecs were beginning to overrun the country, and when, therefore, the peculiar forms of their religion may reasonably be supposed to have been comparatively unknown to the Tezcucans who, as will be shown presently, adhered, in the main, to the more mild religious observances of the ancient Toltecs. The facts with reference to the Aztec human sacrifices, the selection for these of a captive without blemish, the allotment to him of certain maidens as wives, and the general luxury and adoration with which he was surrounded up to the time when, surrendering the flowers that crowned his head and the lyre that he carried, he ascended the pyramid to have his heart torn out of him while still alive, - all these facts are sufficiently well known to substantiate the delineations of the drama. The exact religious conception which underlay these Aztec rites is not known. In the circumstances, it has been thought justifiable to surround them with a certain atmosphere of spiritual truth - though only in twilight - similar to that which is known to have formed the setting of the pagan worship of ancient Egypt and Greece. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cuautla: An Address Before the New York Historical Society, April 4th, 1893 I am to tell you to-night a story of the Mexican Revolution It would be an appropriate introduction, if I had the time, to describe the origin of the Mexican race and show how the Spaniard conquered the men of Aztec land with his sword, and won the hearts of the women, and that thus the Mexican race began to trace the evolution of this race through successive generations and show how, being specially fitted for the environment, it increased and multiplied, while the pure Spaniard barely held his own, and the unmixed Indian wasted away before the new conditions of life brought about by the advent of the European. But the hour which you so graciously give me to-night is too short for all this, and I must jump at once over two centuries and a half and take the race as I find 'it, in its maturity. The time has come for independence. In the nature of things the colonies on this side of the ocean cannot remain forever connected with their mother countries. A revolution is inevitable in Mexico as in the United States. It inheres in the very nature of things. We are wont to boast of the wonderful success that we had in over throwing the English authority and establishing a stable, orderly, and efficient government for ourselves, and we swell with pride as we com pare our triumphant happiness with the troubles and the sorrows that Mexico has had but if we consider carefully the difficulties to be over come in the two countries, think what they had to do compared with.
