Book excerpt: Rick Moody has been writing about music as long as he has been writing, and this book provides an ample selection from that output. His anatomy of the word cool reminds us that, in the postwar 40s, it was infused with the feeling of jazz music but is now merely a synonym for neat. "On Celestial Music," which was included in Best American Essays, 2008, begins with a lament for the loss in recent music of the vulnerability expressed by Otis Redding's masterpiece, "Try a Little Tenderness;" moves on to Moody's infatuation with the ecstatic music of the Velvet Underground; and ends with an appreciation of Arvo Part and Purcell, close as they are to nature, "the music of the spheres." Contemporary groups covered include Magnetic Fields (their love songs), Wilco (the band's and Jeff Tweedy's evolution), Danielson Famile (an evangelical rock band), The Pogues (Shane McGowan's problems with addiction), The Lounge Lizards (John Lurie's brilliance), and Meredith Monk, who once recorded a song inspired by Rick Moody's story "Boys." Always both incisive and personable, these pieces inspire us to dive as deeply into the music that enhances our lives as Moody has done -- and introduces us to wonderful sounds we may not know.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost Yankees is a poignant and nostalgic narrative of the lives and travails of Minor League Baseball, focusing on the 1981 championship season of the New York Yankees’ Triple-A farm club, the Columbus Clippers. That year was especially notable in the annals of baseball history as the year Major League Baseball went on strike in midseason. When that happened, the Clippers were suddenly the best team in baseball and found themselves the focus of national media attention. Many of these Minor Leaguers sensed this was their last, best chance to make an impression and fulfill their dreams to one day reach the majors. The Clippers’ raw recruits, prospects, and Minor League veterans responded to this opportunity by playing the greatest baseball of their lives on the greatest team most of them would ever belong to. Then the strike ended, leaving them to return to their ordinary aspirational lives and to be just as quickly forgotten. Almost Yankees is the previously untold baseball story of a team and its players performing in the shadow of one of the sport’s most famous teams and infamous owners. Featuring interviews with more than thirty former players (including Steve Balboni, Dave Righetti, Buck Showalter, and Pat Tabler) and dozens of other baseball and media figures, this season’s narrative chronicles success, failure, resilience, and redemption as told by a special group of players with hopes and dreams of big-league glory. J. David Herman, who worshipped the team as an eleven-year-old, tracked down his old heroes to learn their stories—and to better understand his own. The season proved to be a launching pad for some, a final chance for others, and the end of the dream for many others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This superbly researched, powerfully reasoned book shatters one of the most destructive business myths of our time: that a corporation must choose between higher profits and protection of the environment." "Instead, as the authors demonstrate with compelling case histories of ten spectacular corporate success stories of the 1990s, the opposite is actually true: A corporation that makes the environment a major priority not only reaps a huge harvest on the bottom line, but also gains a vital edge in the unrelentingly competitive marketplace of this decade of cost cutting." "The reason for this is almost staggeringly simple. Pollution of all kinds is just another word for industrial waste, and waste is exactly what no corporation in search of total quality in its product and of complete acceptance by the consumer can afford today." "The Total Quality Corporation also provides a fascinating overview of the growing challenges facing the three major economic regions of the world - Europe, Japan, and America. How corporations respond and how fast they do it will determine who wins in the ever more demanding race for global marketshare. And the race has already started, as is evident in this timely, compelling book."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book excerpt: In late 1997 Indonesia's economy went into a tail-spin, culminating in social and political upheavals that saw Soeharto's resignation in May 1998, and resulting in a succession of presidents as Indonesia entered a period of democratization. These events are well known, even to casual observers, but Kees van Dijk has penned a magnificent account of Indonesia between 1997 and 2000 that fleshes out the story in rich detail and analysis. The volume itself closes as the soon to be ousted President Abdurrahman Wahid is facing two major corruption, collusion, and nepotism (korupsi, kolusi, and nepotisme or KKN) scandals and the political forces are arraying against him. The author has clearly sifted through a mountain of materials, principally Indonesian language newspaper sources, to bring about an excellent chronicle. At 621 pages, this is quite a large book—and one can only marvel at the way in which a vast array of sources have been combined. Despite its size and detail it is a thoroughly absorbing read—especially if one is already familiar with the events and characters that set the stage for a political and social transformation. The main substantive chapters of the book are supplemented by a large number of helpful appendices (showing political parties, cabinet line-ups, military leaders, a glossary, and so on).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the decades of work by women of color and allied feminists, Standing in the Intersection is the first book in more than a decade to bring communication studies and feminist intersectional theories in conversation with one another. The authors in this collection take up important conversations relating to notions of style, space, and audience, and engage with the rhetoric of significant figures, including Carol Moseley Braun, Barbara Jordan, Emma Goldman, and Audre Lorde, as well as crucial contemporary issues such as campus activism and political asylum. In doing so, they ask us to complicate notions of space, location, and movement; to be aware of and explicit with regard to our theorizing of intersecting and contradictory identities; and to think about the impact of multiple dimensions of power in understanding audiences and audiencing.

And it is hardly the relic of a past era. This scholarly, readable, and provocative book shows how the persistence of racism in America relies on the changing interests of those who hold the real power in society and use every possible means to hold onto it.
