Book excerpt: Winner of the 2017 Christian Book Award for New Author Named one of the top books of 2016 by John Piper's Desiring God ministry To experience why the gospel is good news and answer life’s most foundational questions about identity, destiny, and purpose, we must understand what it means to be united to Christ. If you are a Christian, the Bible says that Christ has united his life to yours, that you are now in Christ and Christ is in you. This almost unfathomable truth is the central theme of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Yet few Christians today experience or enjoy this reality. Union with Christ reveals the transformational power of this ancient doctrine while addressing the basic questions of the human heart: Who Am I? Why Am I Here? Where Am I Headed? How Will I Get There? Nothing is more practical for living the Christian life than union with Christ. The recovery of this reality provides the anchor and engine for your life with God—for your destiny is not only to see Christ, but to actually become like him.

The truth revealed in this book is not my truth or my message, but the word of God which has been imparting itself to universal consciousness throughout all time. That word of God is already embodied in your consciousness, and this truth, which is already your consciousness, is now being unveiled to you within you. Unless God is my consciousness, there will be no truth expressing itself through, or as, me; and, moreover, unless God is your consciousness, you will not understand the truth that is being presented. But, since God is universal consciousness and since God is my consciousness, truth is expressing itself as this book.

Book excerpt: In 2012 my life opened up into Unitive Awareness. These days it is often called nonduality. It is the fulfillment of the prayer Jesus offered on our behalf on the night before he died. In the Gospel of John Jesus prayed for his disciples in the first century. Then he said, "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one -- I in them and you in me -- so that they may be brought to complete unity." Other translators render this last phrase "perfectly one" or "completely one."Coming to know this oneness was the culmination of over forty years of spiritual investigation during my life. During those forty years there had been two previous openings to the Divine, three in all, spaced approximately twenty years apart. In each instance the separate, personal, human self dissolved into awareness that I experienced as union with God. The two initial openings were temporary. The first in 1973 lasted only a few minutes and the second in 1993 lasted months. But the third in 2012 has not ceased in the nine years since. It remains the ever-present substratum of living. At the time of this spiritual awakening I had recently been called to serve as the pastor of a community church in rural New Hampshire. As a pastor I attempted to preach in such a way as to bridge the gap between my experience and the experience of the people in my church who were under my spiritual charge. Upon my retirement from pastoral ministry in 2016, I was able to speak about unitive awareness more often and more directly. I did not have to address where people were spiritually; I could speak from where I was spiritually. Then in 2020 the coronavirus epidemic struck. It turned out to be a blessing for my ministry. The enforced seclusion of the pandemic gave me the time and opportunity to share my thoughts on the subject with a wider audience. I started a podcast called "The Tao of Christ" and a YouTube channel called "Christian Nonduality." In this setting I was able to explore in depth the nondual awareness that had become the fabric of life. Those who were interested could tune in; those who were not could tune out. I was able to explore how best to articulate Christian nonduality. For over a year I posted from one to three episodes per week. I began to hear from people from all around the world who resonated with what I had to say. Many listeners had left Christianity but had retained a belief that the teachings of Christ were still important and contained something more profound than the church taught. Others were Christians who had remained in the church but felt like outsiders. They struggled to remain faithful to a religion that did not proclaim Jesus' gospel of oneness with God. Others came from non-Christian backgrounds and were excited to learn that the truths that they knew were also taught by the Christ.Out of this year of podcasts and videos have emerged three books. The Gospel of Nonduality goes through the Gospel of John expounding the nondual teachings of Jesus. Biblical Nonduality reveals the nondual pointers in many famous stories and sayings in the Old and New Testament. This present book contains teachings on a variety of spiritual topics. They were originally broadcast as independent episodes, and therefore the reader will notice some overlap in the topics of discussion. This book is published in the hope that it will make the teachings of Christian Nonduality more widely available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Union with Christ is the first extensive work on the Christology of Swiss theologian Adolf Schlatter (1852-1938). It offers fresh insights not only to readers interested in Adolf Schlatter's theology in particular, but also to students and professionals from the historical and dogmatic disciplines in general. The first part of the book sets the scene by tracing the biographical context of Schlatter's Christological thinking. It explores Schlatter's evaluation of Kantianism, of the revival movement, of Ritschl and the Ritschl school, and of dialectical theologians, particularly Karl Barth. Based on this analysis, the second part of the work examines the dogmatic shape of Schlatter's relational Christology in more detail. From the perspective of Schlatter's theological triad of seeing-act, thinking-act, and life-act, it investigates his relational account of Jesus Christ against the backdrop of a distinct Trinitarian framework. According to Schlatter, Jesus reveals his divinity on the cross as he is able to maintain fellowship with God in spite of God-forsakenness - mediated by the Holy Spirit - and he reveals his humanity by remaining in close communion with sinners, transforming them and gathering them into the new community of faith.

Book excerpt: We can know God directly. We can have immediate awareness of oneness with God in the present moment. It is not mediated through a church, a religion, a creed or a spiritual path. This is not theological knowledge about God. It is not a religious experience facilitated by a worship service. It is not a spiritual experience elicited by religious disciplines or practices. It is not a revelation of God mediated through Scripture or communicated by spiritual teachers. This is direct unmediated awareness of God. Jesus called this the Kingdom of God. He experienced it at his baptism, and it was his earliest message. Jesus described it to Nicodemus as being "born of the Spirit." The apostle Paul referred to it as being "in Christ." It was Moses' experience of God as "I AM" at the Burning Bush. It was the experience of Job when he met God in the whirlwind. It produces what the New Testament calls the "fruit of the Spirit" in our lives - qualities like Love, Joy, and Peace. It is "the peace that surpasses all human understanding." It is sometimes called nondual awareness. This is just another term for union with God. It is the experience of mystics in the Christian tradition, and it is echoed in other spiritual traditions. It is the Way, the Truth, and the Life that is Jesus Christ. This is the heart of Christianity. And it is available now. All we have to do is wake up to this always present awareness of God. That is what this book points to. Marshall Davis interprets nondual awareness in language familiar to Christians. He calls it Christian Nonduality. He explores the teachings of Jesus, the Wisdom literature of the Hebrew Scriptures, and the writings of the apostles in the New Testament. He shows how all these writings communicate this experience of oneness with God. He concludes with practical instruction on how the reader can experience this same awareness now.

Is there a spring to your step and a twinkle of teasing in your eyes? Does a smile grace your lips and hope shape your vision? The search for a better life, an abundant life, seems to be humanity’s ever constant quest...” Spiritual Awareness introduces one to the joy of discovery. It is a discovery of the spiritual currents that flow within the present moments of the here and now. Amidst life’s ebb and flow, like the rising and falling tide, they are currents that form dynamic movements of spiritual realities. For the skeptic, it provides a vision of a reality that can be experienced beyond the crust of conventional culture. For the searcher, it reveals the mystery of beauty and wonder that lead to spiritual dimensions of worship. For those who suffer, it reveals the reality of a healing grace as spiritual insight reshapes the pain and suffering, consecrates it, and offers it as a humble sacrifice unto the Lord...in so doing, discovering God’s great mercy and comfort for the soul. Spiritual Awareness is an effort to combat the dullness and superficiality of our age. It seeks to probe more deeply into the mysteries that lie within the events of the common place by becoming increasingly aware of the presence and availability of the spiritual life. This awareness leads to an authentic life worth living only because it is steeped deeply in the greatest of all realities. This is true awakening. “All profits are intended to be given to charitable causes.”

Book excerpt: There is an inner voice--an inner knowing--that if Man would only heed and follow, he would begin to move out of all of his confusion and difficulties in living. This inner voice--Man's innermost nature--is the whisper of God guiding him home. There is Light within us all; and once this Light becomes the Truth of you, you shall move into life dynamically and fully--you shall live in, as, and through the eternal truth of your eternal reality. The pages within this communion are of my personal experiences and of my personal dialogue with God. All of the events, disclosures, and understandings herein are depicted as they unfolded unto me. The intent and purpose of this dialogue is to illuminate the path to your own personal realization of your Soul and of God--to move you into the awareness of the one spiritual reality that is. It is to unite your awareness of self into its fullest fruition in, as, and through the One Eternal Truth.
