This is amplified in large-scale projects where it is more difficult to recover from mistakes. To avoid large-scale project failures, Information Systems (IS) professionals must adhere to the basics functions of project management. The four essential functions of project management include Executive Level, Project Level, Team Level, and the Analyst/Doer Level. For the best chance of success these essential functions must be used from the beginning of a large-scale project as well as throughout the entire organization. Straying from these essential functions may breed project failure. From the beginning steps of assessing the values and culture of an organization and scoping/planning a project, this article reviews the essential functions of project management, as well as outlines the steps needed to achieve large-scale project success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "sustainability" has entered the lexicon of many academic disciplines and fields of professional practice, but to date does not appear to have been seriously consid ered within the systems community unless, perhaps, under other guises. Within the wider community there is no consensus around what sustainability means with some authors identifying 70 to 100 definitions of the term. Some see sustainability as the precise and quantifiable outcomes of biological systems whilst others see it in terms of processes rele vant to personal and organizational change with the potential to effect changes in our rela tionships with out environments. Internationally it has been increasingly used in relation to the term "sustainable development"--a term popularised by the Brundland Commis of definitions sion's report in 1987 entitled "Our Common Future. " Despite this diversity and polarised perception on its utility, unlike many other popular terms, it has not had its time and subsided quietly from our language. It is therefore timely for the systems com munity to explore the relationship between systems and sustainability in a range of con texts. Participants in this, the 5th International Conference of the United Kingdom Systems Society (UKSS), have been invited to reflect critically on the contribution of sys tems thinking and action to sustainability-to the sustainability of personal relationships, the organizations in which live and work, and our "natural" environment.

Book excerpt: Project managers who regard hall monitors and drill sergeants as role models need to spend some time with Essentials of Project Control. This book civilizes and humanizes the conventional view of control. No longer the bad boy in a manager's plan-organize-direct-control job description, modern control envelops us like the wise advice of a country doctor. We readily comply with the doctor's sensible prescription because it is good for us, and it works. Essentials of Project Control contains 13 articles published between 1985 and 1998 in the Project Management Journal(R) and PM Network(R). Chosen and organized by Pinto and Trailer, the two-to-ten page selections are best read consecutively. There is a thoughtful integration of ideas, and the articles flow and build nicely upon each other. This is the second book in Project Management Institute's (PMI(R)) Editors' Choice Series, a reprint series designed to supplement the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK(R)).

Book excerpt: This book is about information systems development failures and how to avoid them. It considers what goes wrong with information systems development projects and what actions may be taken to avoid potential difficulties. The reduction of the impact,or even the elimination of the problems,is discussed in terms of an information systems risk management programme. Stop I.T.Project failure helps to ensure that IS project managers are successful in helping to deliver application systems. However, IS development risk can never be entirely eliminated and consequently the practitioner needs to bear in mind that an IS development project is never without risk, and hence there is a continuing potential for something to go wrong. The book covers the key issues and variables and makes specific practical suggestions about the good management practice that is required to implement IS project risk processes. Dr. Dan Remenyi has spent more than 25 years working in the field of corporate computers and information systems. He has worked with computers as an IS professional, business consultant and user. In all these capacities he has been primarily concerned with benefit realisation and obtaining the maximum value for money from the organisations' information systems investment and effort. He has worked extensively in the field of information systems project management, specialising in the area of project risk identification and management. He has written a number of books and papers in the field of IT management and regularly conducts courses and seminars as well as working as a consultant in this area. Dr.Dan Remenyi holds a B.Soc.Sc., an MBA and a PhD. He is a Visiting Professor at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenberg, Sweden and an associate member of faculty at Henley Management College in the United Kingdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite people’s best efforts information systems areparticularly prone to failure. Some systems never materialize, others appear late and/or over budget and those that areimplemented often fail to deliver the promised levels ofperformance. The consequences of these failures affect peoplethroughout the organization concerned and beyond, sometimes to thepoint where they even threaten a company's future survival. Theyalso damage the companies that develop and supply such systems.Worse still, the same types of problems occur again and again; eventhe most exhaustive methods are not able to ensure success. This book aims to help all those people involved withinformation systems to break that repeating pattern of failure.Using real-life examples, it introduces a sophisticated approachbased around the notion of system to come to grips with the causesof actual and potential failure. It presents a model of a systemcapable of action without failure that can be used as a yardstickto judge existing and planned information systems and to suggestmeasures that need to be taken to achieve success. The examples used cover the public and the private sector andrange in size from a nationwide system run by central government toan organization employing around 220 people.
