Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aviation is the world's fastest growing transport industry with the Asia-Pacific region having seen the fastest growth in recent years. It is vulnerable to unlawful acts of interference such as hijackings, bombings or sabotage. To deal with the emergence of such threats in the early 1970s, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which was established by the Chicago Convention in 1944, developed Annex 17 to the convention. This Annex sets out the broad parameters of the world aviation security regime with which more than 170 contracting states to the Chicago Convention must comply. The primary objective of the audit was to assess the economy, efficiency and effecitveness of the Department of Transport and Regional Development's implementation of Annex 17 in the Australian aviation environment.

Book Synopsis Attitude or Latitude? by : Graham R. Braithwaite
Download or read book Attitude or Latitude? written by Graham R. Braithwaite and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia has an enviable record for airline safety - No one has ever died in an accident involving a commercial jet aircraft in Australia. The reasons behind this have been the source of much speculation and theories tend to focus on issues related to the natural environment and even luck. However, with human error being present in arguably 100% of aircraft accidents, it seems reasonable that a good safety record is at least partly the consequence of human intervention. This text uses Australian aviation as a case study of a safe system to explore the interactions between the natural, operational and human environments. Based on doctoral research including a major survey of pilot and air traffic controller perceptions, the book is unusual in that it looks at positive examples in safety rather than taking the traditional reactive approach to safety deficiencies.

Download or read book Airline Passenger Security Screening written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-07-19 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses new technologies being considered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for screening airport passengers for concealed weapons and explosives. The FAA is supporting the development of promising new technologies that can reveal the presence not only of metal-based weapons as with current screening technologies, but also detect plastic explosives and other non-metallic threat materials and objects, and is concerned that these new technologies may not be appropriate for use in airports for other than technical reasons. This book presents discussion of the health, legal, and public acceptance issues that are likely to be raised regarding implementation of improvements in the current electromagnetic screening technologies, implementation of screening systems that detect traces of explosive materials on passengers, and implementation of systems that generate images of passengers beneath their clothes for analysis by human screeners.
