Book Synopsis Oceanography and Marine Environment in the Basque Country by : A. Borja
Download or read book Oceanography and Marine Environment in the Basque Country written by A. Borja and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-03-03 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against a background of extensive multi-disciplinary oceanographic investigations over a number of years, together with the long-term establishment of a Society and Institute, extensive information is available from studies undertaken in the estuarine and coastal waters of the Basque Country. The present authors gained access to unpublished literature and reports which, together with a synthesis of internationally-refereed papers, provide a series of scientific overviews of particular subject areas. Teams of researchers (from Basque Institutes and Universities) combine to present the present 'state of knowledge', within a global context, of processes ranging from sub-seabed to air-sea interaction - incorporating data on the associated biology (including fisheries) and pollutant sources and levels. The latter are compared with regional, national and European legislation. The volume is divided into various sections: Introduction; Geography and Oceanography; Chemical Oceanography and Water Quality; Sediment Characteristics, Quality and Chemistry; Biomonitoring; Communities and Ecology; and Overall Assessment. The topics covered include: an historical review of marine research; the impact of human activities, during past centuries; geology, geomorphology and sediments; climate and meteorology; marine dynamics; hydrography; water mass characteristics; contaminants in the waters; microbiological quality; sedimentological characteristics; contaminants in sediments; biomonitoring of heavy metals and organic components, at tissue organism level and using cellular and molecular biomarkers; bacterioplankton and phytoplankton communities; zooplankton communities; benthic communities; seabirds; biodiversity and conservation; recovery of benthic communities; the polluted systems; and assessment of human impacts. On the basis of these syntheses, future challenges for marine research in the Basque Country are identified, in terms of a 'Research Agenda'. This comprehensive text, relating to estuarine, coastal and oceanographic processes at wide-ranging spatial and temporal scales in the southern Bay of Biscay, will be of interest to researchers, engineers and legislators - on a regional basis and within a world-wide perspective.

Book Synopsis Mediterranean Marine Avifauna by : MEDMARAVIS
Download or read book Mediterranean Marine Avifauna written by MEDMARAVIS and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: May I first congratulate, inconditionally, the Association MEDMARAVIS for organizing this symposium and for inviting me re presenting the Sardinian Ministry of the Environment. I would like to assert that such initiatives help a great deal and in a concrete way, Heads of government departments in charge of land use and natural resources. At this first symposium of the Mediterranean Marine Avifau na I must congratulate the scientific faculty for proposing such an ample spectrum of high quality papers dealing with diverse parts of the Mediterranean and beyond. I am sure that their con tributions will further scientific research, will help to pro tect our environment and will lead, more especially, to the ma nagement and conservation of seabirds. To know in order to manage has often been said at this sym posium. In fact, it is not possible to manage thoughtfully and rationally the natural resources without knowing more profound ly how they function. This reasoning is also valid on a more ge neral scale: regional planning of human activities should not disregard the evaluation of the ecosystem.

Download or read book Report of the Preparatory Meeting for the Consultation on the Management of Fishing Capacity, Shark Fisheries and Incidental Catch of Seabirds in Longline Fisheries, Rome, Italy, 22-24 July 1998 written by and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delegations from 54 members of the Organization and observers from 8 intergovernmental and international non-governmental organizations met at FAO Headquarters to prepare for the Consultation on the Management of Fishing Capacity, Shark Fisheries and Incidental Catch of Seabirds in Longline Fisheries. The meeting discussed draft plans of action for the conservation and management of sharks and for the reduction of the incidental catch of seabirds in longline fisheries, as well as elements for a draft plan of action for the management of fishing capacity. This report summarizes the debates that took place. It also contains the guidance provided by the meeting to the FAO Secretariat about how best to proceed with the development of the documents that will be presented to the consultation proper. This guidance includes inter alia recommendations to the effect that the plans of action must assign the responsibility for actions amongst states (including other fishing entities), regional fishery bodies and international organizations. The plans should include provision for implementation and monitoring, including the issue of how to promote compliance by non-members of regional fishery organizations as well as by flag-of-convenience vessels. It was requested that technical assistance needs of developing countries be specified. It was suggested that the cost for any activities to be carried out by FAO, as part of the implementation of any international plan of action, should not be covered by extra-budgetary sources alone.--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: "This volume of Studies in Avian Biology resulted from a Symposium on Avian Disease at the North American Ornithological Conference held in Veracruz, Mexico, in October 2006. The diverse set of topics addressed in the contributed chapters include the evolutionary and ecological aspects of the host-vector systems of avian infectious disease, effects of genetic variation, introduction success and vector ecology, evolution of resistance and virulence of pathogens, and effects of changing geographic distributions. In additional to empirical studies under field conditions, the authors have developed predictive models to assess the movement and potential impact of these diseases. Other chapters delve into the potential impacts of pathogens on ornithological research and the key role of ornithological science in biosurveillance and documenting impacts of disease on bird populations"-- Provided by publisher.

Download or read book Penguins written by Pablo Garcia Borboroglu and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penguins, among the most delightful creatures in the world, are also among the most vulnerable. The fragile status of most penguin populations today mirrors the troubled condition of the southern oceans, as well as larger marine conservation problems: climate change, pollution, and fisheries mismanagement. This timely book presents the most current knowledge on each of the eighteen penguin species-from the majestic emperor penguins of the Antarctic to the tiny blue penguins of New Zealand and Australia, from the northern rockhopper penguins of the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans to the Galapagos penguins of the equator-written by the leading experts in the field. Included for each species: o Life history o Distribution, population sizes and trends o International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) status o Threats to survival o Legal protection The book also provides information on current conservation efforts, outlines the most important actions to be taken to increase each population's resilience, and recommends further research needed to protect penguins and the living creatures that share their environment. Beautifully illustrated with full-color photographs of each species in their natural habitat and detailed charts and graphs, Penguins will be an invaluable tool for researchers, conservation groups, and policy makers. It will also enchant anyone interested in the lives or the plight of these fascinating animals. Watch the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0s0BbIU6cqE&feature=plcp

Book Synopsis The Birds of the Iberian Peninsula by : Eduardo de Juana
Download or read book The Birds of the Iberian Peninsula written by Eduardo de Juana and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 1411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative title is the definitive avifauna covering the Iberian Peninsula. The Iberian Peninsula is one of Europe's most ornithologically varied regions offering a host of regional specialities. It includes famous birding hotspots such as the Coto Donaña wetlands, mountainous areas such as the Picos de Europa and the Pyrenees, the Mediterranean cork and holm oak forests of the southwest, the migration crossroads of the Strait of Gibraltar and the steppe-like plains of Extremadura and Alentejo. Large numbers of birders from around Europe visit the region to see this wealth of winged wildlife, but to date there has been no comprehensive regional avifauna in English. Birds of the Iberian Peninsula is a national avifauna that fills this gap in the ornithological literature. Full-colour throughout, the book begins with authoritative introductory chapters covering subjects such as geography, climate, habitats, the history of Iberian ornithology and the composition of the avifauna. The species accounts then cover every species recorded in mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, Portugal, Gibraltar and Andorra, including the many vagrants. For each species there is detailed treatment of distribution – with maps of breeding and wintering ranges – habitat selection, population trends, historical and current status, migration and conservation.
