Book Synopsis A Guide to the Birds of Colombia by : Steven L. Hilty
Download or read book A Guide to the Birds of Colombia written by Steven L. Hilty and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 992 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describing all of Colombia's birds, Steven Hilty and William Brown bring together information on one of the world's largest avifaunas-nearly 1,700 species. Over half of all the species of birds in South America are included, thus making the book useful in regions adjacent to Colombia, as well as in the country itself. The primary purpose of the work is to enable observers to identify the birds of the region, but it also provides detailed species accounts and will serve as an important handbook and reference volume. Fifty-six lavish color plates, thirteen halftone plates, and ninety-nine line drawings in the text illustrate over 85% of the species, including most of the resident birds. Notes on the facing-page of each place, and range maps of 1,475 species, facilitate identification. Written with the field observer in mind, the text gives special attention to comparisons of similar species, transcriptions of voices, and comments on behavior, status, and habitat. It also provides ranges, breeding data, and references. Notes outline taxonomic problems and briefly describe species that eventually may be found in Colombia. Introductory chapters and photographs highlight Colombia's geography, climate, and vegetation, and discuss migration and conservation questions, and the history of Colombian ornithology. Appendices contain a large bibliography, a section on birding locations, and coverage of two of Colombia's far-flung island territories, Isla San Andr s and Providencia. Maps depicting vegetation zones, political boundaries, national parks, and the most text localities are included.
Book Synopsis Magellanic Sub-Antarctic Ornithology by : Ricardo Rozzi
Download or read book Magellanic Sub-Antarctic Ornithology written by Ricardo Rozzi and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first synthesis of current knowledge of forest and wetland birds in the world’s southernmost forests, this book contains both original work by Rozzi and Jiménez and the results of a decade of research conducted by the scientists associated with the Omora Park. The first part is a guide to the forest bird populations and habitats in the Reserve, and a summary of the data recorded for the bird species captured with mist-nets and banded. The information is given in two pages for each species, with English, Spanish, and scientific names, as well as a full-color photo, distribution maps, a table with original morphological information, a figure indicating abundance rates, and a brief description of the species’ main features. The second part is a selection of twenty-two published articles on ornithological research at Omora Park during its first decade of studies, from 2000 to 2010. Eleven of the twenty-two articles were originally published in Spanish and are here translated and available to a larger readership. The reprinting of these articles in one place provides interested scientists, students, and wildlife managers a unique and convenient resource. “This book has two important sources of information: original morphological data and the compilation of all publications about the birds in the southern extreme of South America. I think the book will have great significance.”—Victor R. Cueto, professor of natural sciences, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina “A wonderfully rich and in-depth contribution to Sub-Antarctic Ornithology.”—Julie Hagelin, senior research scientist, University of Alaska, Fairbanks

Download or read book National Parks of Argentina and Other Natural Areas written by Francisco Erize and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE NATIONAL PARKS OF ARGENTINA AND OTHER PROTECTED AREASOriginally produced as part of the series "La Naturaleza en lberoamerica" (Nature in Latin America), by INCAFO, with the intention of presenting the protected natural areas of this part of the world, this volume has a much broader aim than merely inventorying such sites in Argentina."The National Parks of Argentina" is in reality the first comprehensive effort of depicting, in book-form, the numerous ecoregions of Argentina, with their ecological features and their main plant and animal components, having both the layman and the specialist in mind. This is achieved without neglecting descriptions of the main protected areas in this country; all its National Parks, as well as those firmly established or more promising natural reserves of the private and the provincial systems, are covered. These sites are presented here as subtopics within the chapters dealing with the respective ecoregions, in order to combine a wider understanding of their ecology and their specific characteristics. The patchwork of the ecological quilt covering Argentina is here depicted, and through these pages the reader is presented with an overall view of the biological richness of the country.
