Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacob Brodie came to Texas in 1836. With no family left in Kentucky, he decided to stay and make his home in the new Republic after Texan independence had been won. It’s 1848 and after a decade and more of battling Comanche Indians and bandits along the borders, Jacob now commands his own company of Texas Rangers. But unattached and with no family, life in Texas has been a lonely existence. The arrival in Galveston of a clipper ship from England will ultimately change Jacob’s world. For on that ship is a man, an attorney, bearing important news. From this man, Jonah Kitchen, Jacob Brodie learns he is the sole male heir to a vast estate in Berkshire, England, from where his mother’s family originated. Likewise, with this estate comes an earldom. A new life begins for Jacob in England, complete with distrustful relatives whom he’s never met and servants who live drastically separate lives. There are also greedy, neighboring land owners who nurture a burning resentment towards this family. While becoming immersed in the upper class of Victorian English society, Jacob feels more and more like a fish out of water as he continues to cling to his honest and simple, yet rough American frontier upbringing. This is a story about a man from the New World trying hard to find his way in the old one. Ultimately, Jacob finds in England family, romance, love, and tragedy.

Book excerpt: Projects are constantly beset by problems, often caused by seemingly small mistakes which collectively lead to larger issues. Why do project managers and teams appear to repeat the same mistakes? Can they make better choices without introducing complex decision analysis processes? How can they make better estimates? Project management is the art and science of human interactions. ProjectThink identifies and explains the paths of those intentional and unintentional actions that lead to trouble. It provides advice and guidance in analysing information and risk and explains how ’choice-engineering’ can facilitate decision-making and encourage everyone involved in a project to follow the right procedures and work collaboratively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In BURRITT’S RAPIDS AND BEYOND, “whatever flows, remains.” From Winnipeg, Vancouver, Montreal, and rural Ontario, Louis Contant considers his place in the world. Fireflies, whip-poor-wills, squirrels, dragonflies, waterfalls, and the soulful notes of a sonata drift through these meditations on nature, spirituality, writing, love, family, friendship, and music. Louis’ poems inhabit sorrow and suffering yet are rich with praise, delighting in the comforts and joys of ritual and routine alongside brevity and ephemera. Whether considering the “alpine range” of Auden’s contributions to literature, the solitude of the poet, the “molded contours” of friendship, the possibility of life on other planets, or the cedar cottage sweetness of home, Louis reminds us that “what really matters is happening all the time / without us.” With humour, wit, and humbleness, Louis confronts his own mortality and celebrates human connection in an age of technology and social unrest. Playful rhymes and uncompromising narratives are accompanied by the poet’s feisty resilience and tuneful undercurrents of grace. Published posthumously, and compiled and contextualized by the poet’s wife, Wilma Brown, Burritt’s Rapids and Beyond showcases and pays tribute to the life of one wise and curious man. At its heart, this book asks what it means to truly belong to this world, to live in it with pleasure and reverence, trying not to step on any wildflowers.
