Book Synopsis Latin America after the Financial Crisis by : Juan E. Santarcángelo
Download or read book Latin America after the Financial Crisis written by Juan E. Santarcángelo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America was one of the regions least affected by the global financial crisis of 2008. During this time of widespread economic downfall, Latin America continued to achieve an annual growth rate of around 5%. Latin America after the Financial Crisis explains how the global financial crisis affected the region and why it was not as severe as other crises in the past. The collection covers data from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, and Venezuela, and demystifies the impact of the crisis on the accumulation path of the region without losing sight of each country's particularities. Each country is analyzed by leading specialized and heterodox researchers who have vast experience in the field and who use an array of heterodox perspectives, from Keynesian to Kaleckian and Marxian to Sraffian.
Book Synopsis A World Without Police by : Geo Maher
Download or read book A World Without Police written by Geo Maher and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If police are the problem, what’s the solution? Tens of millions of people poured onto the streets for Black Lives Matter, bringing with them a wholly new idea of public safety, common security, and the delivery of justice, communicating that vision in the fiery vernacular of riot, rebellion, and protest. A World Without Police transcribes these new ideas—written in slogans and chants, over occupied bridges and hastily assembled barricades—into a compelling, must-read manifesto for police abolition. Compellingly argued and lyrically charged, A World Without Police offers concrete strategies for confronting and breaking police power, as a first step toward building community alternatives that make the police obsolete. Surveying the post-protest landscape in Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Oakland, as well as the people who have experimented with policing alternatives at a mass scale in Latin America, Maher details the institutions we can count on to deliver security without the disorganizing interventions of cops: neighborhood response networks, community-based restorative justice practices, democratically organized self-defense projects, and well-resourced social services. A World Without Police argues that abolition is not a distant dream or an unreachable horizon but an attainable reality. In communities around the world, we are beginning to glimpse a real, lasting justice in which we keep us safe.
Book Synopsis The Foundations of the British Conservative Party by : Bradley W. Hart
Download or read book The Foundations of the British Conservative Party written by Bradley W. Hart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a range of essays on aspects of the British Conservative Party from the late 19th century to the present day. It offers fresh perspectives on Margaret Thatcher and Thatcherism; Britain and Europe; UK policy towards Ireland; Conservatism and reform, and the conservative ideology, to name only a few of the key issues explored. An accessible and concise overview, this book is an important primer for anyone studying British politics, history, or social and political theory. Included are contributions by leading scholars in British political history, think tank commentators, and a former Prime Minister. It offers insights into the Conservative Party's staying power in spite of great social and political changes in the UK and the world. It looks at how the party has functioned historically and what its future might be, discussing its ideology and identity with reference to both Labour and Liberal opponents. Fundamentally it considers the conservative appeal to the electorate, conservative policy in both theory and practice, and debates that have taken place within and outside the party itself. Whether interested in Winston Churchill and David Lloyd George, or David Cameron and Nick Clegg, this work is intended to inform and challenge scholars and political practitioners alike.

Book Synopsis Screen Culture and the Social Question, 1880–1914 by : Ludwig Vogl-Bienek
Download or read book Screen Culture and the Social Question, 1880–1914 written by Ludwig Vogl-Bienek and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-20 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays exploring how reformers and charities used the “magic lantern” to raise public awareness of poverty. Public performances using the magic or optical lantern became a prominent part of the social fabric of the late nineteenth century. Drawing on a rich variety of primary sources, Screen Culture and the Social Question, 1880-1914 investigates how the magic lantern and cinematograph, used at public lectures, church services, and electoral campaigns, became agents of social change. The essays examine how social reformers and charitable organizations used the “art of projection” to raise public awareness of the living conditions of the poor and the destitute, as they argued for reform and encouraged audiences to work to better their lot and that of others.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Irish Politics by : David M. Farrell
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Irish Politics written by David M. Farrell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ireland has enjoyed continuous democratic government for almost a century, an unusual experience among countries that gained their independence in the 20th century. But the way this works in practice has changed dramatically over time. Ireland's colonial past had an enduring influence over political life for much of the time since independence, enabling stable institutions of democratic accountability, while also shaping a dismal record of economic under-development and persistent emigration. More recently, membership of the EU has brought about far-reaching transformation across almost all aspects of Irish life. But if anything, the paradoxes have only intensified. Now one of the most open economies in the world, Ireland has experienced both rapid growth and one of the most severe crashes in the wake of the Great Recession. On some measures Ireland is among the most affluent countries in the world, yet this is not the lived experience for many of its citizens. Ireland is an unequivocally modern state, yet public life continues to be marked by formative ideas and values in which tradition and modernity are held in often uneasy embrace. It is a small state that has ambitions to leverage its distinctive place in the Atlantic and European worlds to carry more weight on the world stage. Ireland continues to be deeply connected to Britain through ties of culture and trade, now matters of deep concern in the context of Brexit. And the old fault-lines between North and South, between Ireland and Britain, which had been at the core of one of Europe's longest and bloodiest civil conflicts, risk being reopened by Britain's new hard-edged approach to national and European identities. These key issues are teased out in the 41 chapters of this book, making this the most comprehensive volume on Irish politics to date.

Book Synopsis Islamic Arms and Armor in The Metropolitan Museum of Art by : David G. Alexander
Download or read book Islamic Arms and Armor in The Metropolitan Museum of Art written by David G. Alexander and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2015-12-31 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armor and weaponry were central to Islamic culture not only as a means of conquest and the spread of the faith, but also as symbols of status, wealth, and power. The finest arms were made by master craftsmen working with the leading designers, goldsmiths, and jewelers, whose work transformed utilitarian military equipment into courtly works of art. This book reveals the diversity and artistic quality of one of the most important and encyclopedic collections of its kind in the West. The Metropolitan Museum's holdings span ten centuries and include representative pieces from almost every Islamic culture from Spain to the Caucasus. The collection includes rare early works, among them the oldest documented Islamic sword, and is rich in helmets and body armor, decorated with calligraphy and arabesques, that were worn in Iran and Anatolia in the late fifteenth century. Other masterpieces include a jeweled short sword (yatagan) with a blade of "watered" steel that comes from the court of Süleyman the Magnificent, a seventeenth-century gold-inlaid armor associated with Shah Jahan, and two gold-inlaid flintlock firearms belonging to the guard of Tipu Sultan of Mysore. Presenting 126 objects, each handsomely photographed and richly documented with a detailed description and discussion of its technical, historical, and artistic importance, this overview of the Met's holdings is supplemented by an introductory essay on the formation of the collection, and appendixes on iconography and on Turkman-style armor.
Book Synopsis Power and Conflict in Russia’s Borderlands by : Helena Rytövuori-Apunen
Download or read book Power and Conflict in Russia’s Borderlands written by Helena Rytövuori-Apunen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Cold War battle lines are seemingly re-drawn, Russia's various 'frozen' war zones (ongoing separatist conflicts) are often cited as particularly volatile and assumed by some Western commentators and policymakers to be 'next' on Putin's 'wish list'. But, as Helena Rytövuori-Apunen demonstrates here, this is a gross (and dangerous) oversimplification that will only serve to fuel the vicious circle of reciprocal military escalation. Drawing on a range of empirical research and across separatist conflicts in Georgia (South Ossetia and Abkhazia), Moldova (Transnistria and Gagauzia) and Azerbaijan (Nagorno-Karabakh) and the 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, her timely book provides a balanced assessment and critique of the assumptions and misunderstandings that inform mainstream discussions, as well as placing the conflicts in their proper and complex historical contexts. At a time when there is an increasing tendency to view Russia as the source of all instability in Eastern Europe, Power and Conflict in Russia's Borderlands is essential reading for anyone interested in the geopolitics of post-Soviet Russia, as well as policymakers and practitioners of peace/conflict resolution studies.

Book Synopsis Ecological Research at the Offshore Windfarm alpha ventus by : Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency
Download or read book Ecological Research at the Offshore Windfarm alpha ventus written by Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present and over the next few years, large-scale windfarms are being installed far off the coast of Germany in the North and Baltic Sea, making a major contribution to electricity generation from renewable energy sources. One of the German government’s aims is to ensure the environmentally sound and sustainable development of offshore wind energy. Germany’s first offshore test site, alpha ventus, was therefore accompanied from the construction phase to the first years of operation by an intensive environmental research programme, the StUKplus project, financed by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and coordinated by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency. Marine and ecological aspects have been researched there for more than five years to improve the level of knowledge about the ecological impacts of offshore windfarms. This book provides a broad, richly illustrated overview of applied and new research methods and monitoring techniques. It summarises the key research findings on the impacts on benthic communities, fish, marine mammals and birds, also taking into account underwater sound and sediment measurements. Interpreting the results in the sense of lessons learned, new challenges and perspectives are discussed for future sustainable offshore development in German waters.
