Book excerpt: Mathematics is an effective tool to study and model the world in which we live. Schematically, a model is the representation of a system or a process obtained by substituting to the real phenomenon another one in a more familiar field through simplifications, abstractions and analogies. In this book the authors introduce tools needed to carry out computer simulations of membrane reactors. These simulations serve as a complement to conventional experiments, enabling us to learn something new, something that cannot be found out in other ways. This book emphasises the utility of mathematical modelling as an effective tool for predicting/simulating various membrane reactors processes working under different scenarios. The book is divided in 11 chapters dealing with the approach to different membrane reactors. The separation properties of the membranes are introduced first and used in simple simulations in which no reaction takes place. Afterwards, different approaches for simulation of different membrane reactors (porous, dense, zeolitic, metallic and polymeric, photocatalytic, bio- membrane reactors) are introduced and used is base case studies. Finally, the last chapter briefly introduces new numerical techniques applied to membrane and membrane reactors with particular attention to some aspects of quantum mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small-scale steam-methane reforming system for localized, distributed production of hydrogen offers improved performance and lower cost by integrating the following technologies developed at the University of Houston; (1) Catalyzed steam-methane reforming on ceramic foam catalyst substrates. (2) Coupling of reformers to remote heat sources via heat pipes instead of heating by direct-fired heaters. (3) Catalytic combustion of methane with air on ceramic foam substrates as the heat source. Each of these three technologies confer benefits improving the efficiency, reliability, or cost of an integrated compact steam-methane reforming system. A prior 2-D computer model was adapted from existing FORTRAN code for a packed-bed reactor and successfully updated to better reflect heat transfer in the ceramic foam bed and at the reactor wall, then validated with experimental heat transfer and reaction data for use in designing commercial-scale ceramic foam catalytic reactors. Different configurations and sizes of both reformer and combustor reactors were studied to arrive at a best configuration for an integrated system. The radial and axial conversions and temperatures of each reactor were studied to match the heat recovery capability of the reformer to the heat generation characteristics of the combustor. The vetted computer model was used to size and specify a 500 kg/day hydrogen production unit featuring ceramic foam catalyst beds integrated into heat pipe reactors that can be used for multiple end users, ranging from small edible fats and oils hydrogenators to consumer point of sale hydrogen fueling stations. The estimated investment for this 500 kg/day system is $2,286,069 but is expected to drop to less than $1,048,000 using mass production methods. Economic analysis of the 500 kg/day hydrogen production system shows that it is not presently competitive with gasoline as a transportation fuel, but the system is still economically attractive to stationary fuel cell applications or small chemical users with a delivered hydrogen price as low as $1.49/kg, even with a 10% IRR that includes investment recovery, depreciation, taxes, etc.

Book excerpt: Energy and feedstock materials for the chemical industry are in increasing demand and, with constraints related to the availability and use of oil, the energy and chemical industry is undergoing considerable changes. In recent years, major restructuring has occurred in the oil, petrochemical, and chemical industry, with increasing attention devoted to the use of natural gas, methane in particular, as a chemical feedstock rather than just as a fuel. The conversion of remote natural gas into liquid fuels or other transportable chemicals is a challenge to industrial catalysis. Few processes exist so far with the major ones involving the conversion of natural gas to synthesis gas by steam reforming, CO2 reforming, or partial oxidation, followed by the syntheses of methanol, hydrocarbons (Fischer-Tropsch synthesis), or ammonia. In this book, a comprehensive overview of the field of processing natural gas is given, through a series of chapters written by leading scientists and engineers in the field. New developments are discussed and current work relevant to the area is shown by a series of recent works by researchers working in this and related fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A membrane reactor is a device for simultaneously performing a reaction and a membrane-based separation in the same physical device. Therefore, the membrane not only plays the role of a separator, but also takes place in the reaction itself. This text covers, in detail, the preparation and characterisation of all types of membranes used in membranes reactors. Each membrane synthesis process used by membranologists is explained by well known scientists in their specific research field. The book opens with an exhaustive review and introduction to membrane reactors, introducing the recent advances in this field. The following chapters concern the preparation of both organic and inorganic, and in both cases, a deep analysis of all the techniques used to prepare membrane are presented and discussed. A brief historical introduction for each technique is also included, followed by a complete description of the technique as well as the main results presented in the international specialized literature. In order to give to the reader a summary look to the overall work, a conclusive chapter is included for collecting all the information presented in the previous chapters. Key features: Fills a gap in the market for a scientific book describing the preparation and characterization of all the kind of membranes used in membrane reactors Discusses an important topic - there is increasing emphasis on membranes in general, due to their use as energy efficient separation tools and the ‘green’ chemistry opportunities they offer Includes a review about membrane reactors, several chapters concerning the preparation organic, inorganic, dense, porous, and composite membranes and a conclusion with a comparison among the different membrane preparation techniques

Book excerpt: Methane steam reforming is a well-established technology for the hydrogen production at industrial scale. For decentralized applications, the use of this energy intensive technology requires the development of novel, heat integrated reactor concepts. The adiabatic reverse-flow reformer is such a concept that enables to energetically couple the highly endothermic methane steam reforming with an exothermic combustion reaction using an asymmetric switching pattern, in which the operating conditions to run the production (reforming) and regeneration (combustion) steps alternate with every flow reversal. One of the main challenges for the technical realization of this concept is the efficient reheating of the packed bed at a high temperature level, avoiding excess temperatures that might damage the catalyst and the reactor itself. The present work tackles this aspect and describes the development of a combustion chamber to be embedded in the packed bed. The chamber is designed in order to enable its operation under the so called flameless oxidation conditions, in which flame formation during combustion is suppressed and hence, the highest temperatures attained limited. The successful realization of this concept and its potential to efficiently reheat the reverse-flow reformer under dynamic operation is experimentally demonstrated and reported. The experimental observations provide an insight into the potential, the limitations and the attainable performance of the system. These observations are supported by a series of detailed simulations. Besides enabling the analysis of alternative reactor configurations and switching patterns, the simulation results corroborate that the reverse flow-reformer studied experimentally is especially suited for the production of hydrogen in decentralized facilities.
