Congar's sense of the future and his conviction that something very important is happening in history led him to re-emphasize forgotten dimensions of Christian tradition, especially those that value the human person. When Congar reflected on Church authority and how it is best exercised, he was not thinking about a power that curtails freedom. Seeking to rediscover what is specific to Christianity, he described authority as a reality that is at the service of growth, where paying attention to the unknown and the unexpected is of the utmost importance. Congar was one of the greatest artisans of Vatican II and his writings are characterized by the urgent call for the reforms made necessary by a changing world, and by an understanding of catholicity - a sense of the Church that is not sectarian, but that lives and thinks "according to the whole". This volume explores the four themes that are prominent in Congar's writings, namely tradition, reform, catholicity and authority. The book does not assume a detailed knowledge of Congar's writings but addresses a difficulty that is frequently encountered in the present time - no one better than Yves Congar has shown that the Church is not a "system".

This is seen in political terms, as in the writings of Justin Martyr, as well as spiritual ones. Charles Munier singles out Tertullian as the first to formulate a doctrine of apostolic succession, but also traces his subsequent path towards the affirmation of the authority of the Holy Spirit over that embodied in the ’Orthodox Church’. The following studies turn to a complementary area of ecclesiology, that of pastoral care. The author points to the great diversity of forms of worship and rite, from the earliest days of the Church; these, he argues, reflect a constant process of adaptation, to fit particular religious needs, and to understand such divergences it is necessary to investigate the theological motives that lay behind them. Particular topics here are those of baptism and marriage, especially the still controversial question of how and with what discretion to treat divorce and remarriage. Dommage que les dirigeants camerounais n'aient jamais réussi à s'inspirer de la démarche ci-dessus et à adopter une ligne de conduite un tant soit peu patriotique. Les politiciens postcoloniaux ont constamment fait montre d'un déconcertant opportunisme. Il peut certes leur arriver de solliciter publiquement ou officieusement l'Eglise à travers ses princes locaux pour accompagner les pouvoirs publics dans la résolution des conflits sociopolitiques. Mais par moments, ils n'hésiteront pas à leur rappeler que l'Eglise ne doit pas se mêler de politique. Elle doit se cantonner dans les affaires spirituelles, oubliant l'un des enseignements les plus mémorables de Mgr Ndongmo, à savoir qu' on ne peut pas conduire les hommes au ciel comme si la terre n'existait pas.
