Download or read book Rings and Things and a Fine Array of Twentieth Century Associative Algebra written by Carl Clifton Faith and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys more than 125 years of aspects of associative algebras, especially ring and module theory. It is the first to probe so extensively such a wealth of historical development. Moreover, the author brings the reader up to date, in particular through his report on the subject in the second half of the twentieth century. Included in the book are certain categorical properties from theorems of Frobenius and Stickelberger on the primary decomposition of finite Abelian formulations of the latter by Krull, Goldman, and others; Maschke's theorem on the representation theory of finite groups over a field; and the fundamental theorems of Wedderburn on the structure of finite dimensional algebras Goldie, and others. A special feature of the book is the in-depth study of rings with chain condition on annihilator ideals pioneered by Noether, Artin, and Jacobson and refined and extended by many later mathematicians. Two of the author's prior works, Algebra: Rings, Modules and Categories, I and II (Springer-Verlag, 1973), are devoted to the development of modern associative algebra and ring and module theory. Those bibliography of over 1,600 references and is exhaustively indexed. In addition to the mathematical survey, the author gives candid and descriptive impressions of the last half of the twentieth century in ''Part II: Snapshots of fellow graduate students at the University of Kentucky and at Purdue, Faith discusses his Fulbright-Nato Postdoctoral at Heidelberg and at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at Princeton, his year as a visiting scholar at Berkeley, and the many acquaintances he met there and in subsequent travels in India, Europe, and most recently, Barcelona. Comments on the first edition: ''Researchers in algebra should find it both full references as to the origin and development of the theorem ... I know of no other work in print which does this as thoroughly and as broadly.'' --John O'Neill, University of Detroit at Mercy '' 'Part II: Snapshots of Mathematicians of my age and younger will relish reading 'Snapshots'.'' --James A. Huckaba, University of Missouri-Columbia

Book excerpt: The goal of the 2019 conference on Stochastic Processes and Algebraic Structures held in SPAS2019, Västerås, Sweden, from September 30th to October 2nd 2019 was to showcase the frontiers of research in several important topics of mathematics, mathematical statistics, and its applications. The conference has been organized along the following tracks: 1. Stochastic processes and modern statistical methods in theory and practice, 2. Engineering Mathematics, 3. Algebraic Structures and applications. This book highlights the latest advances in algebraic structures and applications focused on mathematical notions, methods, structures, concepts, problems, algorithms, and computational methods for the natural sciences, engineering, and modern technology. In particular, the book features mathematical methods and models from non-commutative and non-associative algebras and rings associated to generalizations of differential calculus, quantum deformations of algebras, Lie algebras, Lie superalgebras, color Lie algebras, Hom-algebras and their n-ary generalizations, semi-groups and group algebras, non-commutative and non-associative algebras and computational algebra interplay with q-special functions and q-analysis, topology, dynamical systems, representation theory, operator theory and functional analysis, applications of algebraic structures in coding theory, information analysis, geometry and probability theory. The book gathers selected, high-quality contributed chapters from several large research communities working on modern algebraic structures and their applications. The chapters cover both theory and applications, and are illustrated with a wealth of ideas, theorems, notions, proofs, examples, open problems, and results on the interplay of algebraic structures with other parts of Mathematics. The applications help readers grasp the material, and encourage them to develop new mathematical methods and concepts in their future research. Presenting new methods and results, reviews of cutting-edge research, open problems, and directions for future research, will serve as a source of inspiration for a broad range of researchers and students.

Book Synopsis Algebra and Its Applications by : Dinh Van Huynh
Download or read book Algebra and Its Applications written by Dinh Van Huynh and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among all areas of mathematics, algebra is one of the best suited to find applications within the frame of our booming technological society. The thirty-eight articles in this volume encompass the proceedings of the International Conference on Algebra and Its Applications (Athens, OH, 1999), which explored the applications and interplay among the disciplines of ring theory, linear algebra, and coding theory. The presentations collected here reflect the dialogue between mathematicians involved in theoretical aspects of algebra and mathematicians involved in solving problems where state-of-the-art research tools may be used and applied. This Contemporary Mathematics series volume communicates the potential for collaboration among those interested in exploring the wealth of applications for abstract algebra in fields such as information and coding. The expository papers would serve well as supplemental reading in graduate seminars.

In particular, the contributions emphasize on the computational and combinatorial aspects of the theory, its connection with invariant theory, representation theory, growth problems. It is addressed to researchers in the field.
Book Synopsis Free Ideal Rings and Localization in General Rings by : P. M. Cohn
Download or read book Free Ideal Rings and Localization in General Rings written by P. M. Cohn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-08 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proving that a polynomial ring in one variable over a field is a principal ideal domain can be done by means of the Euclidean algorithm, but this does not extend to more variables. However, if the variables are not allowed to commute, giving a free associative algebra, then there is a generalization, the weak algorithm, which can be used to prove that all one-sided ideals are free. This book presents the theory of free ideal rings (firs) in detail. Particular emphasis is placed on rings with a weak algorithm, exemplified by free associative algebras. There is also a full account of localization which is treated for general rings but the features arising in firs are given special attention. Each section has a number of exercises, including some open problems, and each chapter ends in a historical note.

Book Synopsis Local Multipliers of C*-Algebras by : Pere Ara
Download or read book Local Multipliers of C*-Algebras written by Pere Ara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many problems in operator theory lead to the consideration ofoperator equa tions, either directly or via some reformulation. More often than not, how ever, the underlying space is too 'small' to contain solutions of these equa tions and thus it has to be 'enlarged' in some way. The Berberian-Quigley enlargement of a Banach space, which allows one to convert approximate into genuine eigenvectors, serves as a classical example. In the theory of operator algebras, a C*-algebra A that turns out to be small in this sense tradition ally is enlarged to its (universal) enveloping von Neumann algebra A". This works well since von Neumann algebras are in many respects richer and, from the Banach space point of view, A" is nothing other than the second dual space of A. Among the numerous fruitful applications of this principle is the well-known Kadison-Sakai theorem ensuring that every derivation 8 on a C*-algebra A becomes inner in A", though 8 may not be inner in A. The transition from A to A" however is not an algebraic one (and cannot be since it is well known that the property of being a von Neumann algebra cannot be described purely algebraically). Hence, ifthe C*-algebra A is small in an algebraic sense, say simple, it may be inappropriate to move on to A". In such a situation, A is typically enlarged by its multiplier algebra M(A).
