Book excerpt: Addressing the five primary elements of the hazcom standard, this handbook provides practical implementation tips and strategies for incorporating computers and computer networks into the Hazard Communication Standard (hazcom, 29 CFR 1910.1200) compliance process. Although most organizations have some components of the standard in place, few are able to comply with all five facets of the standard and often fall short of full compliance. In fact, failure to comply with the hazcom standard consistently ranks among the top violations cited by OSHA. Automating Hazcom helps safety managers--and anyone else responsible for managing their facility's MSDS (material safety data sheets)--with expert guidance for choosing a compliance software program and implementing the strategies needed to efficiently incorporate an electronic element into their companies' safety programs. Each chapter ends with a quiz and an exercise giving the reader practical firsthand experience with MSDS Administrator, a hazard communication software program provided by the authors. The included CD-ROM also contains the text of the Hazard Communication Standard, a template for a written hazard communication program, a sample MSDS document, an example of an employee training agenda and visual presentation slides, the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, and a glossary for navigating the often-complex language of the requirements.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study assesses the consequences of the continuing and rapid introduction of information and telecommunications technologies in offices. The report of the study contains 12 chapters. After a brief look at the context of office automation from the perspective of history, the first chapter highlights some expectations about the technologies and their development over the next 15 years. It also introduces a framework that guides the assessment, summarizes the findings, and identifies policy issues for the next decade. Chapters 2 through 6 discuss the possible effects of office automation in more detail. They deal with potential effects on employment levels; the kind of training and education needed for office work; changes in work content, jobs, occupations, and organizations; the quality of work life, the office environment and labor management relations; and the security and confidentiality of information. Chapters 7 and 8 consider two alternatives to conventional offices, made feasible by office automation: home-based work and performance of data-entry operations in countries with lower paid workers. Chapter 9 and 10 look at office automation in the public sector, while Chapter 11 deals with office automation and small businesses. The final chapter considers the implications of office automation for two groups: working women and minorities. Appendix A describes office automation technology as it is now and as it is likely to develop between 1985 and 2000, while Appendix B summarizes case studies of the automation of several offices. Book excerpt: A comprehensive understanding of the potential dangers inherent in warehousing chemicals is the first step in managing the associated risks. Written by industry professionals for warehouse operators, designers, and all who are concerned with the safe warehousing of chemicals, this book offers a performance-based approach to such hazards as health effects, environmental pollution, fire, and explosion, and presents practical means to minimize the risk of these hazards to employees, the surrounding population, the environment, property, and business operations. These basic precepts can be used to evaluate the risks in initial or existing designs for warehousing facilities on a manufacturing site, for freestanding offsite buildings, and for strictly chemical or mixed-use storage. Each of the book’s ten chapters has a list of references and suggestions for further reading. The numerous topics covered make this book invaluable for warehousing designers and operators.
