Book Synopsis Evaluation of a Police-implemented AVM [automatic Vehicle Monitoring] System by : Richard C. Larson
Download or read book Evaluation of a Police-implemented AVM [automatic Vehicle Monitoring] System written by Richard C. Larson and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-part report 1) summarizes the results of an evaluation of an Automatic Vehicle Monitoring (AVM) system, implemented on a trail basis in the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department; and 2) outlines recommendations for individuals who are interested in pursuing police applications of AVM and other new technologies. The AVIM system discussed in Part I is a computer-aided dead-reckoning type, which was implemented as a Phase I prototype system in one police district early in 1975. The evaluation methodology employs a three-pronged analysis of the technology, police operations and attitudinal and organizational impact. Attention is focused on operational performance of the Phase I system, its effect on police operations, such as response time, officer safety, voice-band congestion and command and control, and the effect on attitudes of the police personnel involved in the Phase I program. The recommendations provided in Part II attempt to relate the potential advantages and disadvantages of AVM to those of other new technologies, such as computer-aided dispatching (CAD) and 911. A process is outlined in which a police department can evaluate its own AVM needs. For those planning to implement an AVM system, certain guidelines are suggested in each of the three important evaluation areas: technological, operational and attitudinal. For those interested in greater detail of the St,, Louis AVM evaluation, a larger document entitled Evaluation of an Implemented AVM System: Phase I is available from the Office of Evaluation, National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement Assistance Administration, U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, D.C. 20531.

Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Transportation by : Mark Garrett
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Transportation written by Mark Garrett and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 2000 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viewing transportation through the lens of current social, economic, and policy aspects, this four-volume reference work explores the topic of transportation across multiple disciplines within the social sciences and related areas, including geography, public policy, business, and economics. The book’s articles, all written by experts in the field, seek to answer such questions as: What has been the legacy, not just economically but politically and socially as well, of President Eisenhower’s modern interstate highway system in America? With that system and the infrastructure that supports it now in a state of decline and decay, what’s the best path for the future at a time of enormous fiscal constraints? Should California politicians plunge ahead with plans for a high-speed rail that every expert says—despite the allure—will go largely unused and will never pay back the massive investment while at this very moment potholes go unfilled all across the state? What path is best for emerging countries to keep pace with dramatic economic growth for their part? What are the social and financial costs of gridlock in our cities? Features: Approximately 675 signed articles authored by prominent scholars are arranged in A-to-Z fashion and conclude with Further Readings and cross references. A Chronology helps readers put individual events into historical context; a Reader’s Guide organizes entries by broad topical or thematic areas; a detailed index helps users quickly locate entries of most immediate interest; and a Resource Guide provides a list of journals, books, and associations and their websites. While articles were written to avoid jargon as much as possible, a Glossary provides quick definitions of technical terms. To ensure full, well-rounded coverage of the field, the General Editor with expertise in urban planning, public policy, and the environment worked alongside a Consulting Editor with a background in Civil Engineering. The index, Reader’s Guide, and cross references combine for thorough search-and-browse capabilities in the electronic edition. Available in both print and electronic formats, Encyclopedia of Transportation is an ideal reference for libraries and those who want to explore the issues that surround transportation in the United States and around the world.

Book Synopsis Economic Impacts of Intelligent Transportation Systems by : E Bekiaris
Download or read book Economic Impacts of Intelligent Transportation Systems written by E Bekiaris and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-07-24 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are unique complexities associated with the economic valuation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and telematics. Traditional methods of quantitative analysis may not be appropriate in accurately and reliably assessing the economic impacts of these technologies. Although advanced transportation and related technologies are being planned and deployed at an increasingly rapid pace, many of the technologies are still relatively new, and their use may not be widespread. Much of the initial information and statistics gathered have been anecdotal and have focused more on benefits rather than costs. Therefore, difficulties arise due to the lack of historical data and 'lessons learned' from which to draw upon. In addition, compared with traditional transportation infrastructure, ITS technologies have different life cycles, cost structures, and a number of interrelated elements. This book addresses these concerns and proposes new economic assessment techniques as well as modifications to existing ones. Included are case studies from a multitude of North American, European, and Asian nations and major metropolitan areas covering a wide range of ITS technologies including freeway management, electronic toll collection, advanced driver assistance systems, and traveller information systems.
