Some of the original metal and metal oxides are found in the combustion chamber (from the surface of the propellant to the nozzle exit). The increased propellant performance is related to its particle size distribution. This thesis describes the procedure used for the automatic measurement of particles from holograms taken in the combustion chamber of a rocket motor while firing. It describes the investigation done on two averaging techniques used to reduce speckle noise, capturing the image focused on a spinning mylar disk and software averaging of several image frames. The spinning disk and software averaging of several image frames. The spinning disk technique proved superior for this application. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov two-sample test is applied to different particle samples in order to find an estimate of the number of particles required to obtain a stable distribution function. The number of particles is calculated and given. The last part of this study shows real particle distributions in the form of frequency histograms. Book excerpt: Microscopic particles within an optical hologram reconstruction have been successfully measured using an image digitizer and a PC/AT computer. The hologram was recorded during a test burn of some solid rocket fuel and captured a 2 in x 2 in volume of burning particles as they lift from the fuel surface during combustion. The computer processes the digitized images using feature identification algorithms and sizing in the feature's horizontal dimension, its vertical dimension and area. The operation of the algorithms have been validated against calibration objects. Statistical tests show that about 1,300 particles from several image frames are required to obtain a representative size distribution. Overlying speckle degrades the resolution of the image and can be reduced by a variety of techniques. The performance of these speckle-reduction techniques has been measured and compared in the areas of speckle reduction, loss of resolution, and processing time. Program sizes and processing times have been compared for both FORTRAN and C-language versions of the processing program.

These data are needed to improve predictive capabilities of propellant performance, to provide input related to ammonium perchlorate (AP) - aluminum interactions for steady-state combustion models and to provide in motor particle size distributions to allow more accurate predictions of damping in stability analysis and two phase flow and exhaust plume signature. This study describes the use of Itex/PC software for the filtering and processing of the hologram images to reduce speckle and also, improves a Fortran program which had been written before to extract the particle feature size data from the modified image. The final step shows the statistical particle feature data exhibition by using the STATGRAPHICS (Statistical Graphics System) software. In particular this thesis deals with the software code optimization of existing automatic data retrieval algorithms that are used to extract useful particle information from the holograms using a micro-computer based imaging system. Two forms of optimization were accomplished, the application of an optimizing FORTRAN compiler to the existing FORTRAN programs and the complete rewrite of the programs in the C language using an optimizing compiler. The overall results achieved were a reduction in executable program size and a significant decrease in program execution speed.
