Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many books on composite material analysis, but most cover mainly continuous fiber materials, rather than those filled with discontinuous fibers, which are particularly attractive for large-volume and low-cost applications. This book provides the theoretical and practical background to design and use discontinuous fiber-reinforced polymer materials, with an emphasis on structural parts for the automotive industry. Moreover, the product of years of collaborative work between industry and academia is presented in an easy-to-use, comprehensive manner. The information provided makes it possible for someone with an engineering background to understand the micromechanics of discontinuous fiber-reinforced materials and, hence, analyze the structural performance of components designed with such materials. The book employs a practical approach to cover the key, unique capabilities that are critical for a successful structural analysis of discontinuous fiber-reinforced polymer structures: -Process simulation to estimate the condition of fibers in the finished parts, i.e., fiber length, orientation, and concentration -Capability to measure micro structure, i.e., fiber length distribution, fiber orientation tensors, and fiber concentration, etc. -Estimation of material properties in the part based on fiber condition, as well as environmental conditions such as temperature A broad range of areas is included, such as joining and assembly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomechanical engineering enables wearers to achieve the highest level of comfort, fit and interaction from their clothing as it is designed with the mechanics of the body in mind. This enables products to be developed that are specifically designed for the mechanics of their end purpose (e.g. sports bra) as well as the everyday movement of the body. This is the first book to systematically describe the techniques of biomechanical engineering principles, methods, computer simulation, measurements and applications.Biomechanical engineering of textiles and clothing addresses issues of designing and producing textiles and clothing for optimum interaction and contact with the body. It covers the fundamental theories, principles and models behind design and engineering for the human body's biomechanics, contact problems arising between textiles/clothing and the body and the mechanics of fibres, yarns, textiles and clothing. Material properties are discussed in relation to mechanical performance. It also includes coverage of the Clothing Biomechanical Engineering System developed at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and its associated models and databases. The book concludes with practical examples of clothing applications to illustrate how to carry out biomechanical engineering design for specific applications. - Addresses issues of designing and producing textiles for interaction and contact with the body - Covers fundamental theories, principles and models behind design and engineering - Contains practical examples of clothing applications to illustrate biomechanical engineering design for specific applications

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the proceeding of the 8th in this successful series of conferences organised by the Centre for Composite Materials Engineering of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and sponsored by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (ImechE) and The Institute of Materials (IoM).The papers presented show how FRCs are being used in a steadily increasing range of technologies and how their properties make them appropriate choices for designers and processors interested in exploiting the potential of these highly versatile materials.Composites applications now extend well beyond their established uses in aerospace, marine and land transport and, although exciting developments are still taking place in these fields, it is the rapidly expanding range of civil engineering and infrastructure applications which offers the greatest potential for novel uses. FRC's high strength, light weight and durability make them appropriate for large scale structures and, as these proceedings demonstrate, they are increasingly being specified as an advantageous alternative to more traditional materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of aligning short fibers in a fiber-reinforced material is to improve the mechanical properties of the resulting composite. Aligning the fibers, generally in a preferred direction, allows them to contribute as much as possible to reinforcing the material. The first edition of this book detailed, in a single volume, the science, processing, applications, characterization and properties of composite materials reinforced with short fibers that have been orientated in a preferred direction by flows arising during processing. The technology of fiber-reinforced composites is continually evolving and this new edition provides timely and much needed information about this important class of engineering materials. Each of the original chapters have been brought fully up-to-date and new developments such as: the advent of nano-composites and the issues relating to their alignment; the wider use of long-fiber composites and the appearance of models able to capture their orientation during flow; the wider use of flows in micro-channels in the context of composites fabrication; and the increase in computing power, which has made relevant simulations (especially coupling flow kinematics to fiber content and orientation) much easier to perform are all covered in detail. The book will be an essential up-to-date reference resource for materials scientists, students, and engineers who are working in the relevant areas of particulate composites, short fiber-reinforced composites or nanocomposites. - Presents recent progress on flow-induced alignment, modelling and design of fiber and particulate filled polymer composites - Discusses important advances such as alignment of CNTs in polymer nanocomposites and molecular alignment of polymers induced by the injection molding process in the presence of fillers such as short fibers - Presents fiber interaction/diffusion modelling and also the fiber flexure/breakage models

Book excerpt: The13thInternationalConferenceonMedicalImageComputingandComputer- Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2010, was held in Beijing, China from 20-24 September,2010.ThevenuewastheChinaNationalConventionCenter(CNCC), China’slargestandnewestconferencecenterwith excellentfacilities andaprime location in the heart of the Olympic Green, adjacent to characteristic constr- tions like the Bird’s Nest (National Stadium) and the Water Cube (National Aquatics Center). MICCAI is the foremost international scienti?c event in the ?eld of medical image computing and computer-assisted interventions. The annual conference has a high scienti?c standard by virtue of the threshold for acceptance, and accordingly MICCAI has built up a track record of attracting leading scientists, engineersandcliniciansfromawiderangeoftechnicalandbiomedicaldisciplines. This year, we received 786 submissions, well in line with the previous two conferences in New York and London. Three program chairs and a program committee of 31 scientists, all with a recognized standing in the ?eld of the conference, were responsible for the selection of the papers. The review process was set up such that each paper was considered by the three program chairs, two program committee members, and a minimum of three external reviewers. The review process was double-blind, so the reviewers did not know the identity of the authors of the submission. After a careful evaluation procedure, in which all controversialand gray area papers were discussed individually, we arrived at a total of 251 accepted papers for MICCAI 2010, of which 45 were selected for podium presentation and 206 for poster presentation. The acceptance percentage (32%) was in keeping with that of previous MICCAI conferences. All 251 papers are included in the three MICCAI 2010 LNCS volumes.

Book excerpt: Scientists from academic and the paper industry compile as many aspects of testing properties of paper as possible into a broad reference to help people who plan, specify, and evaluate the physical and mechanical testing of paper material take advantage of the many developments in recent years. An initial essay in each volume discusses the independent invention and widespread use of paper in Mesoamerica beginning sometime before AD 660. The two volumes are paged and indexed separately, but do not seem to be topically distinct. The first edition, Handbook of Physical and Mechanical Testing of Paper and Paperboard appeared in 1983; the second contains 30 chapters, a third of which are new and the others substantially revised, updated, and expanded. c.
