This book was released on 1999 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: System controllers must be fail-safe, low cost, flexible to software changes, able to output health and status words, and permit rapid retest qualification. The system controller designed and tested for the aerospike engine program was an attempt to meet these requirements. This paper describes the aerospike controller design, the automated simulation testing techniques, and the real time monitoring data visualization structure. Controller cost was minimized by design of a single-string system that used an off-the-shelf 486 central processing unit. A linked-list architecture, with states defined in a user-friendly state table, accomplished software changes to the controller. Proven to be fail-safe, this system reported the abort cause and automatically reverted to a safe condition for any first failure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of the next generation of space access vehicles has led to a unique flight test that blends the space and flight research worlds. The new vehicle designs, such as the X-33 vehicle and Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) are powered by linear aerospike rocket engines. Conceived of in the 1960's, these aerospike engines have yet to be flown, and many questions remain regarding aerospike engine performance and efficiency in flight. To provide some of these data before flying on the X-33 vehicle and the RLV, a spacecraft rocket engine had been flight-tested atop the NASA SR-71 aircraft as the Linear Aerospike SR-71 Experiment (LASRE). A 20 percent-scale, semispan model of the X-33 vehicle, the aerospike engine, and all the required fuel and oxidizer tanks and propellant feed systems have been mounted atop the SR-71 airplane for this experiment. A major technical objective of the LASRE flight test is to obtain installed-engine performance flight data for comparison to wind-tunnel results and for the development of computational fluid dynamics-based design methodologies. The ultimate goal of firing the aerospike rocket engine in flight is still forthcoming. An extensive design and development phase of the experiment hardware has been completed, including approximately 40 ground tests. Five flights of the LASRE and firing the rocket engine using inert liquid nitrogen and helium in place of liquid oxygen and hydrogen have been successfully completed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Much has been written about the famous conflicts and battlegrounds of the East during the American Revolution. Perhaps less familiar, but equally important and exciting, was the war on the western frontier, where Ohio Valley settlers fought for the land they had claimed -- and for their very lives. George Rogers Clark stepped forward to organize the local militias into a united front that would defend the western frontier from Indian attacks. Clark was one of the few people who saw the importance of the West in the war effort as a whole, and he persuaded Virginia's government to lend support to his efforts. As a result Clark was able to cross the Ohio, saving that part of the frontier from further raids. Lowell Harrison captures the excitement of this vital part of American history while giving a complete view of George Rogers Clark's significant achievements. Lowell H. Harrison, is a professor emeritus of history at Western Kentucky University and is the author or co-author of numerous books, including Lincoln of Kentucky, A New History of Kentucky, and Kentucky's Governors."

Book Synopsis Flying the SR-71 Blackbird by : Richard H. Graham
Download or read book Flying the SR-71 Blackbird written by Richard H. Graham and published by Motorbooks. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For anyone who has ever wondered what it's like to fly the SR-71 on a secret Mach 3 reconnaissance mission, this book has the answer. Completely redesigned and updated with photos from author Colonel Richard H. Graham's personal archive, as well as a new introduction, Flying the SR-71 Blackbird details what an SR-71 mission entailed, from planning to donning a pressure suit to returning to base. The Lockheed SR-71, unofficially known as the Blackbird, was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed by Lockheed Skunk Works. The aircraft flew so fast and high that not one was ever shot down, even by a missile. SR-71 pilot and instructor Colonel Richard Graham offers a rare cockpit perspective on how regular Air Force pilots and navigators transformed themselves into SR-71 Blackbird crews, turning their unique aviation talents to account in an unprecedented way. Arguably the world's foremost expert on piloting the Blackbird, Graham takes readers along on an operational mission that only a few Air Force pilots have ever experienced.

Book Synopsis AU-18 Space Primer by : Air Command Staff College
Download or read book AU-18 Space Primer written by Air Command Staff College and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US National Space Policy released by the president in 2006 states that the US government should "develop space professionals." As an integral part of that endeavor, "AU-18, Space Primer", provides to the joint war fighter an unclassified resource for understanding the capabilities, organizations, and operations of space forces. This primer is a useful tool both for individuals who are not "space aware"-unacquainted with space capabilities, organizations, and operations-and for those who are "space aware," especially individuals associated with the space community, but not familiar with space capabilities, organizations, and operations outside their particular areas of expertise. It is your guide and your invitation to all the excitement and opportunity of space. Last published in 1993, this updated version of the Space Primer has been made possible by combined efforts of the Air Command and Staff College's academic year 2008 "Jointspacemindedness" and "Operational Space" research seminars, as well as select members of the academic year 2009 "Advanced Space" research seminar. Book Synopsis The Nimrod Review by : Charles Haddon-Cave
Download or read book The Nimrod Review written by Charles Haddon-Cave and published by Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009-10-28 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 2 September 2006, RAF Nimrod XV230 was on a routine mission in southern Afghanistan when she suffered a catastrophic mid-air fire, leading to the total loss of the aircraft and the death of the 12 crew and two mission specialists on board. An RAF Board of Inquiry (2007) concluded that the loss was caused by a fuel escape and its ignition by contact with an exposed element of the Cross-Feed/Supplementary Cooling Pack (SCP) duct. The Nimrod Review was set up to examine the arrangements for ensuring airworthiness and safe operation of the Nimrod MR2, to assess where responsibility lies for any failure and what lessons are to be learned. The Review concludes the most likely source of fuel was an overflow during air-to-air refuelling and agrees with the ignition source. It highlights design flaws introduced at three stages in the life of XV230, and failure to heed previous potentially relevant incidents. The Nimrod safety case drawn up between 2001 and 2005 is found to be error-strewn and incompetent and characterised by a general malaise, an assumption that the Nimrod was safe because it had flown for 30 years. The Review criticises BAE Systems, the MoD Nimrod Integrated Project Team, QinetiQ and individual personnel from those organisations involved in the safety case. Organisational causes are also identified: in-service support for equipment; major organisational changes between 1998 and 2008; and delays in procurement of the Nimrod MRA4 replacement. Lessons to be learned are profound and wide-ranging. Recommendations are made for a new approach in eight key areas: principles (leadership, independence, people, simplicity); the airworthiness regime; safety cases; aged aircraft; personnel strategy; industry strategy; procurement; safety culture. The loss of XV230 was avoidable and a systemic breach of the Military Covenant.
