Book excerpt: Situation awareness is a crucial capability of any autonomous system, including mining vehicles such as drill rigs and mine trucks. Typically situation awareness is interpreted as the capability of an autonomous system to interpret its surroundings and the intentions of other agents. The internal system awareness however, is often not receiving the same focus, even though the success of any given mission is completely dependent of the condition of the agents themselves. The internal system awareness in the form of vehicle health is the focus of this thesis. As the mining industry becomes increasingly automated, and vehicles become increasingly advanced, the need for condition monitoring and prognostics will continue to rise. This thesis explores data-driven methods that estimate the health of mining vehicles to accommodate those needs. We do so by utilizing available sensor signals, common on a large amount of mining vehicles, to make assessments of the current vehicle condition and tasks. The mining industry is characterized by small series of highly specialized vehicles, which affects the possibility to use more traditional prognostic solutions. The resulting health information can be used both to aid in tasks such as maintenance planning, but also as an important input to decision making for the planning system, i.e. how to run the vehicle for minimum wear and damage, while maintaining other mission objectives. The contributions include: a) A method to use operational data to estimate damage on the frame of a mine truck. This is done using system identification to find a model describing stresses in the structure with input from other sensors such as accelerometers, load sensors and pressure sensors. The estimated stress time signal is in turn used to calculate accumulated damage, and is shown to reveal interesting conclusions on driver behavior. b) A method to characterize the different driving tasks by using an accelerometer and a convolutional neural network. We show that the model is capable of classifying the vehicle task correctly in 96 % of the cases. And finally c), a system for underground road monitoring, where a quarter car model and a Kalman filter are used to generate an estimate of the road profile, while positioning the vehicle using inertial measurements and access point signal strength.

Book excerpt: Earth observation systems, by use of space science and technology advances, present a large-scale opportunity for applying remote sensing methods with geographical information system (GIS) developments. Integrating these two methods makes it possible to achieve high-accuracy satellite data processing. This book considers aspects of GIS technology applications with space science technology and innovation approaches. It examines the potential of Earth observation satellite systems as well as existing challenges and problems in the field. Chapters cover topics such as RGB-D sensors for autonomous pothole detection, machine learning in GIS, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) modeling, and others.

Book excerpt: An efficient and accurate inventory of a state highway agency's assets, along with the means to assess the condition of those assets and model their performance, is critical to enabling an agency to make informed investment decisions in a Transportation Asset Management (TAM) environment. Today, new technologies provide fast and improved ways to gather, process, and analyze data. The key is to identify and gather the most useful, reliable, cost-effect information and use it to make informed decisions for asset management. Four key infrastructure areas have been identified as primary asset components; pavements, bridges, geotechnical features, and roadside appurtenances. Each area contains multiple categories and data elements important for sound decision making. Although some similarities exist in these four primary categories, the nature of data collection may differ, depending on the asset type. The, sheer number of data elements and the length of asset networks for pavements and roadside appurtenances render the automated highway speed data collection method a necessity rather than a luxury. However, the discrete nature of bridges and geotechnical features make the automated mobile data collection method on a network level unfeasible with today's technology. Important issues in the collection process include precision, subjectivity and variability of the process itself, as well as speed, safety of the survey crew, proximity of the public, cost, etc. Although previous research has attempted to address these issues and determine the most appropriate method(s), the question remains as to which roadway data collection system is best for state highway agencies given real world constraints. This research set up a "sealed envelope" experiment wherein the identification, location, description, and quality of the asset data elements are known only to NCSU researchers. Vendors are informed of only the data necessary to perform their evaluation. To support this effort at 95-mile test course near Raleigh, North Carolina was identified, which contained a sampling of pavement, roadside, geotechnical and bridge elements. This document reports on the findings from the study

Book excerpt: In response to growing concerns over traffic congestion, traffic management systems have been built in large urban areas in an effort to improve the efficiency and safety of the transportation network. This research effort developed an automated condition monitoring method that uses archived traffic data to provide a basis for assessing current traffic conditions and, if applicable, determining the degree to which the conditions are abnormal. The method is an improvement over commonly used traffic condition monitoring methods in that the system state is characterized across a range of conditions rather than in an incident or incident-free condition. An additional improvement is that the interrelationships among traffic parameters are exploited by using multivariate statistical quality control (MSQC) rather than analyzing values of mean speed, volume, and occupancy (traffic variables typically measured in a traffic management system) independently. This statistical approach provides the tools and basis for the extensions needed to assess current traffic conditions using historical data. Prototype applications for use in traffic management systems and for data mining purposes were developed. These applications employ a newly developed procedure for screening both current and archived data from traffic detectors to reduce the potential of using erroneous data in the MSQC-based traffic condition monitoring method. Several strategies for sampling the historical database, based on temporal relationships with current data, were developed and evaluated. Implementation of the method will allow traffic managers to focus their efforts on abnormally operating locations and then determine an appropriate course of action to attempt to return the system state to normal. Potential benefits include more efficient use of human and computer resources in traffic management centers, improved return on investment in traffic detection infrastructure, and reduced traffic congestion.
