This newest edition of American Reference Books Annual (ARBA) provides librarians with insightful, critical reviews of print and electronic reference resources released or updated in 2017-2018, as well as some from 2019 that were received in time for review in the publication. By using this invaluable guide to consider both the positive and negative aspects of each resource, librarians can make informed decisions about which new reference resources are most appropriate for their collections and their patrons' needs. Collection development librarians who are working with limited budgets—as is the case in practically every library today—will be able to maximize the benefit from their monetary resources by selecting what they need most for their collection, while bypassing materials that bring limited value to their specific environment.

This book was released on 2012-12-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction Every day, uneducated buyers spend good money on non-authentic autographs. Most thinking they are getting a great deal or “nobody else must know about this!” Sadly, most educated buyers do and watch in wonderment why someone would spend hundreds (even thousands) of dollars on a worthless item. This can be seen at local live auctions, online auctions/sales and even retail stores. That is the core reason why we spent the time and effort on creating this guide. Although there are only 50 profiles within this book, we feel it covers a large magnitude of the most common forgeries currently available to buyers. How to Use This Guide The purpose of the guide is to help educate and show buyers, collectors and dealers what to look for when reviewing an autograph and to make a better decision on whether or not to buy. Although this guide is very comprehensive and has an in depth view of what's good and bad, it shouldn't be viewed as the “final authority” for authenticating autographs. An educated buyer is a smart buyer, but we encourage you to use authentication services when purchasing your valuable collectibles. We hope this information will help you avoid bad purchases and make wiser buying decisions. Autograph Examples Each profile will have a variety of different examples on different items such as: Balls, Jerseys, Bats/Sticks, Helmets, Gloves, Flats (Photos, Index Cards, Postcards), etc. Our attempt was to get high resolution examples for both authentic and non-authentic signatures – in some cases that was difficult (mainly forgeries). As for authenticity, we used certified authentic examples and the non-authentic examples are, in our opinion, not authentic. All authentic signatures will have a black border framing the image, the non-authentic will have a grey border.

PSA/DNA experts educate the reader in the specific characteristics of each of these special signatures and what to look for when hunting for the real deal. How many Mickey Mantle autographs were actually signed by clubhouse attendants? Why are there so few Joe Jackson signatures? Selected by highly regarded autograph experts using criteria including rarity, historical importance, and popularity, This title features the most sought-after signatures in the hobby. The book starts out with the absolute pinnacle of this grouping, "The Most Wanted List," showcasing the twenty most desirable autographs in the hobby. The players selected for this book represent a cross section of baseball history, from the very early years to the present. You will meet the men who developed the rules of the game, the field generals who implemented the rules and devised the strategies, as well as the players who blazed the trail for future generations. These players quickly became larger-than-life stars, and fans sought autographs both in-person and through mail requests. As their star power grew, many players' signing habits and signature styles evolved. This information, coupled with the story narratives of the players, makes for a fascinating and fun read. The pages of this book are filled with original autograph images on a variety of mediums, along with corresponding player images, giving you a visual look at the players who signed each desirable autograph. In some cases, the player images appear on a period photo or baseball card, but in many cases the player images are original works by renowned sports artist Arthur K.Miller.
