This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography Poor Richard, Letters A remarkable fact about the Autobiography of Frank lin is that it first appeared in a foreign language. While he left his manuscripts by will to his grandson, William Temple Franklin, he had sent a copy of this narrative of his life to an intimate friend, M. Veillard, Mayor of Passy, near Paris. Dr. Franklin died in 1790, at the age of eighty four, and the next year appeared in Paris a French trans lation of his Autobiography. From this first translation it was at once retranslated into English, and rival editions were published in London in 1793. This imperfect version, made from a French translation, and not at all the original Autobiography, was the only text of this remarkable book ever printed in English up to the year 1817, when the grandson, after strange and unaccounted-for delays, at last published in London, in six volumes, the Works of Benjamin Franklin, and among them the Autobiography from the Doctor's manuscript. Book excerpt: Printer, author, philanthropist, abolitionist, scientist, librarian, diplomat, inventor, philosopher, self-aggrandizer, and social wag, Benjamin Franklin is one of the most fascinating characters in all of American history-a quality that was not lost on the man himself, as his autobiography makes plain. Avoiding the strife of the American Revolution entirely, Franklin focuses his incisive wit on the culture and society of colonial Philadelphia, weaving a mostly true mythology of humble origins and hard work that created the concepts of "The American Dream" and "the self-made man." This edition includes letters written by Franklin as well as "Poor Richard's Almanac," a popular pamphlet that was continuously reprinted from 1732-1758. Franklin's Autobiography, originally published in French in 1791, and translated into English and published in London in 1793, is considered the great autobiography of life in colonial America.American icon BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (1706-1790), born in Massachusetts to a British immigrant father and colonial mother, published the famous "Poor Richard's Almanac," helped found the University of Pennsylvania, and was the first Postmaster General of the United States. Franklin's likeness adorns, among other things, the United States hundred-dollar bill.

Book Synopsis Poor Richard's Women by : Nancy Rubin Stuart
Download or read book Poor Richard's Women written by Nancy Rubin Stuart and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An engrossing look at the human side of Benjamin Franklin . . . Using a post-feminist lens that’s critical of gender essentialism, Stuart rescues these women from obscurity . . . This is a terrific read: poignant, provocative, and probing.” —Library Journal, Starred Review A vivid portrait of the women who loved, nurtured, and defended America’s famous scientist and founding father. Everyone knows Benjamin Franklin—the thrifty inventor-statesman of the Revolutionary era—but not about his love life. Poor Richard’s Women reveals the long-neglected voices of the women Ben loved and lost during his lifelong struggle between passion and prudence. The most prominent among them was Deborah Read Franklin, his common-law wife and partner for 44 years. Long dismissed by historians, she was an independent, politically savvy woman and devoted wife who raised their children, managed his finances, and fought off angry mobs at gunpoint while he traipsed about England. Weaving detailed historical research with emotional intensity and personal testimony, Nancy Rubin Stuart traces Deborah’s life and those of Ben’s other romantic attachments through their personal correspondence. We are introduced to Margaret Stevenson, the widowed landlady who managed Ben’s life in London; Catherine Ray, the 23-year-old New Englander with whom he traveled overnight and later exchanged passionate letters; Madame Brillon, the beautiful French musician who flirted shamelessly with him, and the witty Madame Helvetius, who befriended the philosophes of pre-Revolutionary France and brought Ben to his knees. What emerges from Stuart’s pen is a colorful and poignant portrait of women in the age of revolution. Set two centuries before the rise of feminism, Poor Richard’s Women depicts the feisty, often-forgotten women dear to Ben’s heart who, despite obstacles, achieved an independence rarely enjoyed by their peers in that era.
