Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiographical Sketches I am so often asked for references to some pamphlet or journal in which may be found some outline of my life, and the enquiries are so often couched in terms of such real kindness, that I have resolved to pen a few brief autobiographical sketches, which may avail to satisfy friendly questioners, and to serve, in some measure, as defence against unfair attack. On October 1st, 1847, I made my appearance in this "vale of tears," "little Pheasantina," as I was irreverently called by a giddy aunt, a pet sister of my mother's. Just at that time my father and mother were staying within the boundaries of the City of London, so that I was born well "within the sound of Bow bells Though born in London, however, full three quarters of my blood are Irish. My dear mother was a Morris - the spelling of the name having been changed from Maurice some five generations back - and I have often heard her tell a quaint story, illustrative of that family pride which is so common a feature of a decayed Irish family. She was one of a large family, and her father and mother, gay, handsome, and extravagant, had wasted merrily what remained to them of patrimony. I can remember her father well, for I was fourteen years of ago when he died. A bent old man, with hair like driven snow, splendidly handsome in his old age, hot-tempered to passion at the lightest provocation, loving and wrath in quick succession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nil Desperandum: The Writer's Motto Adopted in Youth A little boy sat in front of his father, and held the reins that con trolled a restive horse. Unknown to the boy, the reins passed around him and were alsci in his father's hands. He saw an occasion to pull them. With artless simplicity the child looked around, saying, 'father, I thought I was driving; but I am'not, am I Thus it is often with men who think they are shaping a destiny which a higher hand than theirs is really directing. They do their own will because it is also the will of God. A stronger hand guides them a mightier power holds the helm of their vessel, and saves from rock and wreck. Happy are they who yield to the guidance of the Almighty hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Nearly thirty-five years have been spent in New Orleans. It has been my lot to pass through twenty most fatal and wide-spreading epidemics, in cluding the yellow fever and cholera. Besides, during many of those summers which were reported to have been healthy by the medical authorities, I have witnessed a great deal of suffering and mor tality among unacclimated strangers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Christ's Stead Autobiographical Sketches During the last fourteen years I have been asked to write the story of my life, but I have said, "No, no, I am too busy living my life to stop to write it. If lives are ever written on earth it should be when that life has begun in eternity;" or I said, "There are too many books now, if read there will be no time left to read Gods blessed book, the Bible, and why write a book that no one has time to read." Besides, my life is such a common, every-day affair, who would care to read it? Lately friends have said that much in my life would help the dear colored people of the United States. Now whatever will help them I stand ready to do, if first of all, it will glorify God, and, surely, what really helps any of God's family does glorify Him; therefore, praying that the Holy Spirit may bring to my remembrance the part of my life that will help save souls for whom Jesus laid down His life, I begin my task. If my readers expect me to entertain them with the amusing, queer, ignorant expressions the colored people have spoken in my hearing, they will be disappointed. The black man has been held up to ridicule too long; even the pictures of him usually seen in papers are only caricatures. It is true that, lately, we do see a few representative colored faces in print. As to their peculiar dialect, the ignorant white people of the South use about the same. I would not dare hold up to ridicule either class, any more than I would make fun of the ignorance of my dear grandmother who had but little chance for an education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches There is no such question in regard to the nine-tenths of the Memoirs which relate to the dead. Slight as they are, they convey the impression which the completed life left in each case upon my own mind, and, as I believe, on that of the society of its time. As the impression was final, the first record of it should remain untouched in order to remain faithful. I there fore simply reproduce the Sketches, making no other change than in the headings announcing the death, in each case. For convenience of reference, and for the sake of something like order in the presentment of materials so various, the personages are classified. In each group, however, there is no other precedence than the date of departure. These few words of explanation being given, I have only to leave the Sketches to produce their own impres sion, whether on the minds of those who from peculiar knowledge carry a corresponding picture in their own breasts, or of those to whom the personages were historical while they lived. The records are true to my own impressions; and, secure in this main particular, I have no misgiving in offering them to readers whose curiosity and interest about the distinguished dead of their time claim such satisfaction as any survivor may be able to give. Book excerpt: Jessie Benton Frémont (1824-1902), the daughter of a Missouri Senator and wife of explorer John Charles Frémont, first came to California in 1849, when she and her young daughter spent six months at her husband's newly-acquired ranch at Mariposas, 140 miles east of San Francisco. The Frémonts also spent the years 1851-1852 and 1857-1861 at the Mariposas ranch before moving to St. Louis during the Civil War. They returned to California in 1887 and made Los Angeles their home for the rest of their lives. Far-West Sketches (1890) was inspired by Mrs. Frémont's 1887 railroad trip to California, a journey that prompts her to reminiscence about her earlier stay in the state in the 1850s with anecdotes of the minefields, ranching, and a home in the bustling town of San Francisco. The reminiscences center on homemaking and childrearing.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from California Sketches: New and Old These Sketches wrote themselves, as it were. About three years ago my friend, Prof. Alonzo Phelps (formerly of Harvard University), in reply to my remark that somebody ought to preserve the vanishing phases of the early California life, said, "Yes, it ought to be done, and you are the man to do it." The matter was then dismissed from my mind as the flattering suggestion of a partial friend. After leaving California, every thing connected with my life, or that had come under my observation while there, assumed a fresh interest to my own mind. The remark of my friend was remembered, and, more to gratify a kindly impulse than with a view to make a volume, in snatches of such leisure as an editor gets, the penciling of these humble Sketches began. Now that the little book is finished, I am at least half sorry it was ever begun. Yet there has been a pleasure in writing it. The old days have come back to me again, and images that were fading have stood before me in the form and color of life. Ah! if I could make them stand thus before my kind readers! The Sketches are all from real life. In one or two instances names are disguised for obvious reasons. I have told the story as I saw it, and as I remember it. There is no fancy-sketch among these chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
