Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australian Sketches Made on Tour An American humorist tells a story of a man who was lost at sea, and who swam and swam for an interminable time. He gives the most graphic account of the feelings of this man whilst battling against the waves, and then says: "At that moment my friend touched something hard - it was the United States!" Now, that belated American could not have had more difficulty in touching the United States than I and other passengers arriving last week in the good ship Victoria had in touching Australia. We had had a splendid passage all the way from London, and no illness whatever on board. The passengers did not leave the steamer at Aden, as there was no time; and the Victoria arrived at and left Colombo with a clean bill of health. After a run of ten days, we reached Albany. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australian Tales, and Sketches From Real Life Most of the following tales and sketches have appeared in the Sydney Mail; and I have good reason to believe that they have been favourably received by thousands of subscribers to that influential newspaper. In publishing them in a volume, I am yielding to the persuasion of many kind friends, who have expressed their belief that they Will be well received, and be useful. I have spent much time in altering and improving all the articles; and they Will be fresh to my old readers. The fact of the articles having appeared in the columns of the Sydney Mail, will be a sufficient guarantee to parents, that they need not scruple to place the volume in the hands of their children. I will only add, that there is nothing controversial or see tarian in it; and I have used my utmost efforts to make it both amusing and instructive. English readers will find many phases of Australian life depicted for which I claim this merit, that their accuracy may be relied on. The horses are ready, and the moon is rising, and Dick, my best friend, and partner in the station, thrusts his head through an Open French window, he having left us an hour ago to order the horses to be run in from the horse paddock, a mile distant from the homestead, and to make arrangements generally for one of our little shooting diversions, without which life on a Sheep station in the bush would indeed become burdensome. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Australian Christmas Collection: Stories, Sketches, Essays Christmas being proverbially and traditionally the time for family reunions, it is only in accord with the spirit of the season that a writer should celebrate that great festival by bringing together the scattered productions of his pen, and placing them sociably side by side between the covers of one book. This volume is, for the most part, a selection from my contributions to Australian periodical and newspaper literature during the past few years. The acknowledgment of my grateful appreciation is due to the several hundred subscribers throughout the colonies, who have done me the honour of ordering copies of the book in advance of its publication. Book Synopsis Art Workshop for Children by : Barbara Rucci
Download or read book Art Workshop for Children written by Barbara Rucci and published by Quarry Books. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art Workshop for Children is not just another book of straightforward art projects. The book's unique child-led approach provides a framework for cultivating creative thinking and encourages the wonder that comes when children are allowed to freely explore the creative process and their materials. As children work through these open-ended workshops, adults are guided on how to be facilitators who provide questions, encourage deep thinking, and help spark an excitement for discovery. Children explore basic materials and workshops that use minimal supplies, and then gradually add new materials to fill the art cabinets as well as new skills and more complex workshops. Most workshops are suitable to preschool-aged children, and each contains ideas for explorations and new twists to engage older or more experienced artists. Interspersed throughout are sidebar essays that introduce perspectives on mess-making, imperfection, the role of adult, collaborative art, and thoughts on the Reggio Emilia method, a self-guided teaching philosophy. These pieces underscore the value of art-making with children, and support the parent/teacher/care-giver on how to successfully lead, question, and navigate their children through the workshops to result in the fullest experiences.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Fourth Tour in Western Australia I have, therefore, in the following pages, closed my eyes to Budget speech statistics, and turned aside from tabulated comparisons of trade growth and commercial expansion. The facts and figures that I once made books of, are now chronicled day by day in the leading English newspapers, and it is only left for me to relate the personal impressions of my tour, and touch upon the details that marked its course. I claim no serious merits for my book - my purpose is to interest and amuse. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of South Australia for the Melbourne International Exhibition, 1880 A glance at the accompanying map shows that, in spite of her name, South Australia occupies the central portion of the Australian Continent. Lying between 12 and 38 S. Lat., and 129 and 1410 E. Long. The colony extends from the Indian to the Southern Ocean, and is bounded on the east by Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria on the west by Western Australia. Roughly defined, her territory is miles long by 500 miles wide, and has an area of over square miles - about ten times that of Great Britain. With the exception of a small settlement on the northern coast (to which a separate chapter will be given) colonisation has hitherto been confined to an area of about a quarter of a million square miles, in the southern part of the colony; and it is consequently to this that the remarks made about South Australia in the following pages must be understood to apply. A portion of the colony still remains unexplored. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The quality of lectures given in an Australian University is determined by the mind of the students only less than by the mind of the lecturer; and with pleasure I take this opportunity to thank the generations Of students, who, for thirty years, have not only made lecturing a happiness, but have also, by kindly appreciation of good intention, well salted with honest witness to evident failure, given reason to do one's best. Chapters I. And VI. Were given as lectures to the Royal Australian Historical Society, and are printed in its journal, Vol. III. Part 10, and Vol. IV. Part 4.
