Book excerpt: Twenty years after their college graduation, four Radcliffe girls return to their Harvard class reunion with mixed emotions and curiosity. It is the first time they have met since their hopeful student years, when each of them had wonderful dreams of becoming wives, mothers, and successful career women. But much has changed since the fifties, and the former classmates’ lives have been altered by events none of them could have foreseen. Humorous, heartwarming, often poignant and nostalgic, Class Reunion captures the spirit of the fifties brilliantly in contrast to the changing world the four girls have embraced, often with straightforward and pithy commentary on the social conventions of the past.

Download or read book Strangers to Neighbours written by Shauna Labman and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2020-09-23 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a leading country in global refugee resettlement, Canada operates a unique program that allows private groups and individuals to sponsor refugees. This innovative approach has received growing international attention, but there remains a need for a more expansive understanding of the sponsorship framework and its potential implications within Canada and across the world. Strangers to Neighbours explains the origins and development of refugee sponsorship, paying particular attention to the unintended consequences and ethical dilemmas it produces for refugee policy. The contributors to this collection draw upon law, social science, and philosophy to bring a more robust and objective perspective on Canada's historical experience with sponsorship into wider conversations about the refugee crisis and resettlement. Together, they present recent cases that exemplify how the model has been applied and how it functions, while also analyzing the challenges that emerge in host-sponsor relations. This volume further examines how sponsorship has been implemented differently in countries such as the United States and Australia. The first dedicated study of refugee sponsorship policy, Strangers to Neighbours assembles leading scholars from a range of disciplines to consider whether Canada's system is indeed a sustainable model for the world.

Book Synopsis Refugees, Resources, Reunion by : Robert Birrell
Download or read book Refugees, Resources, Reunion written by Robert Birrell and published by Fitzroy, Vic. : VCTA Publishing. This book was released on 1979 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Australia's immigration programme with particular emphasis on refugees. It is based on papers presented at the seminar on "Australia's Immigration Responsibilities" (Melbourne, February 1979) The aim of the editors is to clarify differences of attitude in Australia towards immigration, and indicate ethical and sociological premises upon which the differences are based. The book is divided into three sections: the first is based on the seminar discussions; the second further develops the issues raised in the first section; and the third deals with background issues, and the views of the Government and the Opposition on policy implications. The specific chapters dealing with refugees include: "Australia's Immigration Policy and Refugees", "Family Reunion and the Refugees Crisis", "Family Reunion and Refugees" and "Population, Immigration and the Domestic Market, and Indochinese Refugees". The editors conclude that, considering the current unemployment situation and the absence of proper manpower programmes, there is no good case for recruiting immigrants to fill alleged gaps in the workforce. They also conclude that the system of selection of immigrants does not meet effectively any of the varying priorities. They recommend, for strong humanitarian reasons, giving priority to refugees and family reunion cases; and, in addition, discontinuing the arrangement whereby New Zealand citizens have a free right of entry and settlement.
