Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, part of the series Cave and Karst Systems of the World, begins with a review of the interaction between people and caves in Australia (including conservation), followed by descriptions of the spectacular cave diving sites, before comprehensively covering all the major carbonate and noncarbonate karst areas, subdivided by rock type and region, and including the origin of the caves. This is followed by broad overviews of cave minerals and speleothems, cave biology and cave fossils. Each section was written by one or more specialists in the topic and is illustrated by clear diagrams and superb colour photos. The book emphasises the unique aspects of the Australian karst, including the variability in the age of the caves (very old to very young) and the impact of isolation on the stygofauna, as well as the vertebrate fossils preserved in the caves. Written in an easy-to-read style, the book is a primary reference guide to Australian karst and represents a valuable asset for anyone interested in the topic, not only cavers and academics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 37 of Reviews in Mineralogy, divided into three sections, begins with an overview (Chapter 1) of the remarkable advances in the ability to subject minerals-not only as pristine single-crystal samples but also complex, natural mineral assemblages-to extreme pressure-temperature conditions in the laboratory. These advances parallel the development of an arsenal of analytical methods for measuring mineral behavior under those conditions. This sets the stage for section two (Chapters 2-8) which focuses on high-pressure minerals in their geological setting as a function of depth. This top-down approach begins with what we know from direct sampling of high-pressure minerals and rocks brought to the surface to detailed geophysical observations of the vast interior. The third section (Chapters 9-19) presents the material fundamentals, starting from properties of a chemical nature, such as crystal chemistry, thermochemistry, element partitioning, and melting, and moving toward the domain of mineral physics such as melt properties, equations of state, elasticity, rheology, vibrational dynamics, bonding, electronic structure, and magnetism. The Review thus moves from the complexity of rocks to their mineral components and finally to fundamental properties arising directly from the play of electrons and nuclei. This volume was prepared for a short course by the same title, organized by Russell J. Hemley and Ho-kwang Mao and sponsored by the Mineralogical Society of America, December 4-6, 1998 on the campus of the University of California at Davis.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Mineralogy for Australian Readers Tms volume, written at the earnest solicitation of many of my former pupils, as well as professional friends in different parts of Australia, has been in the first place designed as a text-book for the use of students at college, but I am led to hope that it may also find an auditory beyond the class-room. Its publication needs no apology from me. Assuredly in these Colonies, whose mineral resources have been so largely laid under contribution, it is fully recognized that the Science of Mineralogy has a distinct bearing on the material wants of the community. The difficulty so often experienced is to meet with an elementary book fit to serve both as a companion to the lectures and a guide to those who are debarred from attend ing a regular course of instruction. There is no lack of excellent works of this kind written by European and American authors, but they convey, as a rule, little or no information respecting the distribution and mode of occur rence of mineral species in Australasian localities. Seeing how important it is to encourage the scholar to verify by personal observation the truth of the teaching he has received, it becomes necessary, in order to foster this habit of observing in the young mineralogist, to make him acquainted with the places where he may study the natural occurrence of minerals, and whence he may draw the material for his laboratory practice. In the descriptivepart of this book it has been my aim to present the subject essentially from the standpoint of an Australian inquirer. It is now well understood that the study of rocks, so important to the geologist and mining engineer, can only be satisfactorily pursued by the aid of mineral, as distinguished from chemical, analysis; the Optical properties, as revealed by microscopic examination, have accordingly received in the case of the rock-forming minerals rather more attention than is usually given in elementary text-books. Care has been taken to render the book of practical use in the laboratory, and the chemical properties and reactions leading to the identification of the species have been fully set out. Worldwide, more than 4600 different minerals were identified. Since 2008, the most beautiful of them have found their permanent home in TERRA MINERALIA in the university town of Freiberg. In 90 selected steps this e-book leads the mineralogical journey that began in Europe to Asia and Australia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: of a Roman numeral, an alphabetic character and an Arabic numeral. This designation constitutes the classification symbol based on the system in Mineralogische Tabellen by Hugo Strunz (a summary is shown in Appendix A). The Roman numeral and alphabetical character divide the minerals into broad groups based mainly on chemistry, with the silicate subdivision based on silicate polymerization. The Arabic numeral specifies the group to which a particular mineral belongs; a group is defined mainly on the basis of crystallographic similarities, but minerals with similar chemical compositions are sometimes included in the group even though they do not exhibit crystallographic affinities with other members of the class. The next entry gives the name of the author of the mineral and the date of its introduction into the literature. In some cases where a mineral has been redescribed or the name has been changed from the original, this entry will reflect the person and time when this was done. This is followed by a reference to what we have tried to make the latest, or most authoritative, literature report. We have attempted to include at least one reference for each species. If there is a second reference following the first, it will be a reference to the determination of the crystal structure. The abbreviations used in the references are given in Appendix B. The final entry, when present, gives the names of similar or related minerals and is preceded by the deSignation "See also" .
