Book excerpt: A philosophical analysis informed by history, this work examines the reasons for the highly destructive behavior of the Red Guards in the early part of China's Cultural Revolution. By probing the political, educational, and psychological factors influencing the Red Guards, Jing Lin sheds light on how teenagers and young adults were able to justify violence in the name of class struggle and human rights. She concludes that non-critical, categorical thought, buttressed by the political and educational systems, was pivotal. Jing Lin introduces the work with a discussion of democratic and non-democratic thought, and of the Red Guards' views about class struggle, authority and justice. She then examines the theory behind Mao's totalitarian rule. Chapter Three is devoted to schools, and their decisive role in developing the Red Guards. The psychology of the Red Guards follows: Lin details how concepts of the proletariat, class enemies, and intellectuals nurtured habits of aggression and obedience. In concluding, Lin suggests how to foster critical and democratic thinking in Chinese education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some countries welcome new arrivals from abroad while other nations are less hospitable? Why do immigration policies change over time? Fences and Neighbors considers several of the world's wealthiest democracies, nations that remain magnets for economic migrants as well as for refugees. Focusing on the tendency of immigrants to concentrate in specific locations in their new homelands, this book is the first to analyze the implications of this political geography for democracies. Politics of immigration control starts at the local level, Jeannette Money asserts. Drawing on detailed evidence from Britain, France, and Australia, and more briefly from the United States, she demonstrates that local support for and opposition to immigration is contingent upon economic conditions, as well as the numbers of foreigners entering the country and their access to the resources of the welfare state. Whether these local pressures are translated into policies of openness or closure at the national level depends on whether the local constituencies are critical to maintaining or gaining a national electoral majority.

Book excerpt: 1975 in Australia was a year marked by political upheaval and cultural revival, a time when it was exciting to be an Australian. In this fascinating book, journalist Mark Juddery examines the year that marked a complete turning point in Australian history; politically, socially and most of all, on the international stage. Comprising of interviews with prominent Australians who remember the year well, as well as issues of the time, 1975 explores: The Whitlam Dismissal; the introduction of Medibank, PNG's independence from Australia; the return of native land to Aborigines in the Northern Territory; the first time unemployment soared passed 5%; the first Australian political sex scandal to make headlines; Malcolm Fraser's egging in Darwin soon after the Dismissal; Peter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock being shown to an international audience; release of Australia's highest selling album by AC/DC, the launch of Radio 2JJ (which became Triple J); and the year Australia admitted that the Vietnam War was a mistake!

Book Synopsis Australian Music and Modernism, 1960-1975 by : Michael Hooper
Download or read book Australian Music and Modernism, 1960-1975 written by Michael Hooper and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on newly available archival material, key works, and correspondence of the era, Australian Music and Modernism defines "Australian Music" as an idea that emerged through the lens of the modernist discourse of the 1960s and 70s. At the same time that the new "Australian Music" was distinctive of the nation, it was also thoroughly connected to practices from Europe and shaped by a new engagement with the music of Southeast Asia. This book examines the intersection of nationalism and modernism at this formative time. During the early stages of "Australian Music" there was disagreement about what the idea itself ought to represent and, indeed, whether the idea ought to apply at all. Michael Hooper considers various perspectives offered by such composers as Peter Sculthorpe, Richard Meale, and Nigel Butterley and analyzes some of the era's significant works to articulate a complex understanding of "Australian Music" at its inception.
Book Synopsis Australia’s Pursuit of an Independent Foreign Policy under the Whitlam Labor Government by : Changwei Chen
Download or read book Australia’s Pursuit of an Independent Foreign Policy under the Whitlam Labor Government written by Changwei Chen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining a series of episodes in Australia’s foreign relations under Whitlam, the author pays attention to a broad range of hitherto insufficiently researched domestic and international issues in Australian’s foreign relations of the early 1970s. The election of the Whitlam-led Labor Government in December 1972 ushered in fresh ideas and audacious initiatives in Australia’s foreign policy. Whitlam’s approach was shaped by a vision of taking Australia forward to its “rightful” and “independent” place in the future of the Asia-Pacific region. They range from immigration policy and the abolition of appeals from Australian Courts to the Privy Council to such major international issues as the Anglo-American base in Diego Garcia, French nuclear testing in the Pacific and the Five-Power Agreement with respect to Malaysia and Singapore. He demonstrates how the pursuit of foreign policy independence repeatedly placed the Whitlam Government in a position wedged in between Australia’s traditional allies and the Third World; and how it navigated Australia’s national interests on a series of dilemma situations involving conflicting strategic interests between Australia and its traditional allies, and those between major powers and the non-aligned countries. The analysis presented in this book contributes to not only historical literature on the subject but also the understanding of how a middle power, like Australia, can navigate intensifying great power rivalry. Essential reading for scholars of Australian foreign policy, as well as being an invaluable case study of middle power diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific region.
