Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Experiments in Australia New Zealand, Vol. 1 of 2 Of the Commission on the Land Laws of New South Wales, the document which did so much to open the eyes of believers in Free Trade in Land. Therefore, though 1881 was in no sense such a year of change or unrest as 1890, it so happens that almost all these chapters deal with matters which have occurred since. The suggestion that I should write some such book as this was first made to me seven years ago, and a year later I agreed to make the attempt. For the last twenty years my life's business has directly or indirectly touched upon questions treated of here, and some at least of any leisure I have had has been given up to studying them. Even earlier I had learned a little about colonial politics. Yet this undertaking has proved by no means easy. It has had to be carried out thousands of miles away from most of my sources of authority, and with small opportunity of comparing notes with colonial experts. And the book deals with a throng of reforms and changes in seven separate communities - experiments not settled and done with, but nearly all in progress, still matters of controversy - succeed.ing, failing, expanding, or being patched up month by month. The amount of revision and recast ing required has, in consequence, been considerable. What has held me to a troublesome task has been the stream of inquiries about colonial questions which has come to me without ceasing for the last half-dozen ye Ninety Englishmen out of every hundred may be quite unconcerned about colonial social experiments, and, frankly, I think they are. But there is an increasing number of students in England, on the Continent, and in America who are sincerely interested in them. A book for these students requires no apology, and no such book, covering the necessary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Savage Life and Scenes in Australia and New Zealand, Vol. 1 of 2: Being an Artist's Impressions of Countries and People at the Antipodes Writing as an artist, I make no pretensions to literary skill, having attempted nothing beyond arranging in a readable form the rough notes that I made at the moment; and the constant demands of my profession on my time have compelled me to perform this task in a more hurried manner than I had anticipated. I must, therefore, claim indul gence for any marks of crude or hasty composition, from those readers who are accustomed to the studied paragraphs and flowing periods of aecom plished writers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel and Talk, Vol. 1 of 2: My Hundred Thousand Miles of Travel Through America, Australia, Tasmania, Canada, New Zealand, Ceylon, and the Paradises of the Pacific These volumes speak for themselves: those who are interested in me and my travels and observations will read them, and the others can leave them alone. Writers are sometimes vain enough to imagine that what amuses them must necessarily amuse other people I am under no such delusion, and am there fore quite prepared to receive with resignation and meekness the neglect of the public and the strictures of the Press, or vice vend. I have yielded, perhaps rashly, to the representa tions of my publishers, and admitted two portraits. For the first I am indebted to the kindness of Mr. Frederick A. Atkins, editor of 'the Young Man, ' and for the second to the eminent photographers, Messrs. Russell Sons of Baker Street. These volumes only include my travels outside Europe from 1885 to 1895. Book excerpt: Excerpt from People and Places Here and There, Vol. 1 If you and I were really traveling by rail and by steam, we should need, unless we were millionaires, to be a little more direct in our routes. But as it is, it doesn't much matter; and so we may as well zig-zag down to that great island of Australia, thence to the Fijis, thence to the Sandwich Isles, taking in on our way a flying visit to New Zealand. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered why New Zealand's plants and animals are so different from those in other countries? Why kakapo is the only parrot in the world that cannot fly, or why the kiwi lives here and nowhere else? New Zealand is an extraordinary place, unique on earth, and the remarkable story of how and why life evolved here is the subject of Ghosts of Gondwana. The challenge of explaining New Zealand's natural origins is picked up in this fully revised edition of the popular award-winning book. It presents the latest scientific research in highly readable form, highlighting studies that reveal the deep historical background of our landscapes, fauna and flora - from ancient frogs and moa to delicate insects and the magnificent southern beech forests. It introduces the latest discoveries and resolves past issues like the 'Oligocene drowning' hypothesis. Exciting fossil discoveries are revealed and new scientific technologies and approaches to the discipline of historical biogeography are discussed - approaches that range from undersea geology to molecular clocks - and it inevitably draws attention to the debates and conflicts that distinguish different schools of opinion in this holistic branch of theoretical science. This revision incorporates the results of 10 years of intensive scientific research and includes four entirely new chapters to: focus on 'yesterday's maps' to draw attention to the ephemeral islands in our history that have possibly acted as stepping stones for terrestrial animals and plants but today have sunk into the sea; incorporate the author's own special interest in an ancient group of 'jaw-moths', unknown and unnoticed by most people but with a strong message that New Zealand is part of the world when it comes to explaining where our fauna have come from; present recent research findings on our huge flightless birds, the ratites; and include New Zealand's terrestrial molluscs into the story. Ghosts of Gondwana identifies New Zealand as one of the most challenging places on earth to explain, but it's readable, engaging style and revised illustrations render this often-controversial discipline of science into a format that is accessible to any reader with an interest in natural history and the unique environment of New Zealand.
