Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australasia, Vol. 1: Australia and New Zealand All place names beginning with Mac or M' have been spelt in full as Mac, beginning the second syllable with a small letter. This system has been adopted after reference to Dr. J. Scott Keltie, with whose approval I feel safe. It is often now impossible to determine how the stockman who first surveyed a country from Mac 's Look-out, or first watered his flock at Mac 's Water-hole, preferred to spell his name. When we find two brothers spelling their name, one Macallister and the other m'allister, geographers may be excused for adopting a uniform spelling of this prefix. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travel Letters From New Zealand, Australia and Africa Saturday, january 4, 1913. - This is written in the Pacific ocean, on the ship Sonoma, two days out of Sydney, Australia, where we expect to land next Mon day. We have been on the ship seventeen days, and the passengers and servants seem as familiar as people with whom we have associated many years. In the main, we have had a pleasant voyage, although the weather was somewhat boisterous the first few days out of San Francisco. We stopped eight hours at Honolulu, and five hours at Pago Pago, in the Samoa Islands. There was an elaborate celebration on board on Christ mas day, which included a big dinner, speeches, and a dance, and we also had a similar New Year celebration, although we actually had no New Year's day. At a late hour on the 3lst of December we crossed the l80th meridian, and, when we awoke the following morning, the date was January 2, 1913. Ships sailing westward drop a day on crossing the 180th meridian, and ships going eastward add a day. In traveling toward the sun, the day increases in length, and, in a trip around the world, this increase amounts to exactly twenty four hours. Every day we set our watches back from twenty to thirty minutes, and when we reach Canton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Years in Canterbury, New Zealand: With Visits to the Other Provinces, and Reminiscences of the Route Home Through Australia, From a Lady's Journal The following little work is from the pen of one who resided for twelve years in the Canterbury Settlement, where she was enabled to found for. Herself a happy and prosperous home, and subsequently visited the other principal provinces of New Zealand, and the great towns of Australia, returning to the old country. By the overland route. Having been in the habit of noting down in her journal all that struck her as interesting or peculiar in the course of her travels, and finding, on her return to England, how imperfect was the knowledge possessed by the general public of the bright and sunny lands so far away, she has been induced to publish extracts from those notes, which, as a discerning eye may perceive, were originally intended only for the amuse ment of private friends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edward Gibbon Wakefield: The Colonization of South Australia and New Zealand Amonc all the men celebrated in this series of biographies as 'builders of Greater Britain, ' Edward Gibbon Wakefield, inferior to none in genius and achievement, is perhaps the only one whose inclusion could excite inquiry or surprise. Not that his claims have at any time been weighed and found wanting, but that their existence is unknown to the multitude. By the mass of his countrymen at home he is chiefly remembered by the one incident in his career which he would have wished to be forgotten. The historians of the colonies he founded in general pass him over with slight notice, some omitting his very name. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australia, Its Rise, Progress, and Present Condition In New Zealand, while the north has been discon carted by the spreading disaffection of the native races, the south has been alive with energy and tumult by the discovery of a rich gold-field. Regarding the Native difficulty, the colonial legislature had expressed its loyalty to the Queen, and the desire to put down any native-king movement among the aborigines. A new ministry, composed of Mr Fox and others, who had opposed the war, and who were inclined to some extent to justify the natives, had come into office.
