Book Synopsis Psychology in Australia by : Mary Nixon
Download or read book Psychology in Australia written by Mary Nixon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychology in Australia: Achievements & Prospects is an assessment of the achievements and prospects of the field of psychology in Australia. Issues related to teaching and research are examined, and research areas that are flourishing, as well as those that are floundering or neglected, are highlighted. The main emphasis is on fields of endeavor in which psychology is applied to individual, social, and organizational issues. This book is comprised of 22 chapters and begins with an introduction to the first phases of teaching and practice of psychology in Australia, followed by a historical overview of applied psychology in the country. Subsequent chapters explore the influence of culture on Australian psychology; psychological research in universities and colleges, in clinical and counseling psychology, and in health education; and the training and education of psychologists in Australia. Some applications of psychology are also discussed, along with private practice in Australian psychology. The final chapter focuses on Australian psychologists in the world context. This monograph should be of interest to students and general readers as well as to psychologists themselves.

Download or read book The Antipodean Philosopher written by Graham Robert Oppy and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy in both Australia and New Zealand has been has been experiencing, for some time now, something of a 'golden age', exercising an influence in the global arena that is disproportionate to the population of the two countries. To capture the distinctive and internationally recognised contributions Australasian philosophers have made to their discipline, a series of public talks by leading Australasian philosophers was convened at various literary events and festivals across Australia and New Zealand from 2006 to 2009, covering diverse themes ranging from local histories of philosophy (in particular, the fortunes of philosophy in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and New Zealand); to discussions of specific topics (including love, free will, religion, ecology, feminism, and civilisation), especially as these have featured in the Australasian philosophy; and to examinations of the intellectual state of universities in Australasia at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
Book Synopsis Essays on Philosophy in Australia by : Jan J.T. Srzednicki
Download or read book Essays on Philosophy in Australia written by Jan J.T. Srzednicki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy flourished in Australia after the war. There was spectacular growth in both the number of departments and the number of philosophers. On top of this philosophy spread beyond the philosophy departments. Serious studies, and interest in philosophy is now common in faculties as diverse as law, science and education. Neither is this development merely quantitative, the Australian researcher has come of age and contributes widely to international debates. At least one movement originated in Australia. This makes the study of philosophy in Australia timely, evidenced by the number of articles concerned with this area that begin to appear in international journals. In Australia itself there is growing interest in the history of the country's philosophical development. There are discussions in conferences and meetings: the matter is now the subject of courses.
Book Synopsis Universals by : James Porter Moreland
Download or read book Universals written by James Porter Moreland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Things are particulars and their qualities are universals, but do universals have an existence distinct from the particular things describable by those terms? And what must be their nature if they do? This book provides a careful and assured survey of the central issues of debate surrounding universals, in particular those issues that have been a crucial part of the emergence of contemporary analytic ontology. The book begins with a taxonomy of extreme nominalist, moderate nominalist, and realist positions on properties, and outlines the way each handles the phenomena of predication, resemblance, and abstract reference. The debate about properties and philosophical naturalism is also examined. Different forms of extreme nominalism, moderate nominalism, and minimalist realism are critiqued. Later chapters defend a traditional realist view of universals and examine the objections to realism from various infinite regresses, the difficulties in stating identity conditions for properties, and problems with realist accounts of knowledge of abstract objects. In addition, the debate between Platonists and Aristotelians is examined alongside a discussion of the relationship between properties and an adequate theory of existence. The book's final chapter explores the problem of individuating particulars. The book makes accessible a difficult topic without blunting the sophistication of argument required by a more advanced readership.
