Book Synopsis Modeling Commuter Rail Riders’ Access Mode Decision-making Using Revealed Preference Data from Austin, Texas by : Scott Kevin Kilgore
Download or read book Modeling Commuter Rail Riders’ Access Mode Decision-making Using Revealed Preference Data from Austin, Texas written by Scott Kevin Kilgore and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important and often overlooked aspect of commuter rail trips is the access trip to the boarding station. In this research, a revealed preference survey was conducted among commuter rail riders on the MetroRail Red Line in Austin, Texas to understand riders’ access trip to the station and their chosen mode. Using the access trip distance and mode data, as well as generalized demographic data collected, a binomial logit model was created to estimate whether a rider may choose to access the Red Line by walking or driving to the station. A preference for walking was observed at Downtown Station and Plaza Saltillo Station, and for entertainment and social trips. Travelers boarding at park-and-ride stations and for school trips were found to prefer driving to the station. The model estimated can be used to understand Red Line riders’ decision-making, and may be used to predict access mode for a given trip.
Book Synopsis GIS Models for Analyzing Intercity Commute Patterns by : F. Benjamin Zhan
Download or read book GIS Models for Analyzing Intercity Commute Patterns written by F. Benjamin Zhan and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas Department of Transportation funded Project 0-5345 to reach a better understanding of intercity commute patterns in Texas and to find regional public transportation solutions for intercity commuting problems. The project's interdisciplinary research team came from Texas Southern University, Texas State University-San Marcos, Texas Transportation Institute (TTI), and Prairie View A & M University. This report summarizes the research activities and accomplishments of the project regarding travel corridors and geographic information system (GIS) commute models, including: (1) development of a set of GIS-based analysis models for the identification of intercity commuting patterns and travel corridors in central Texas; (2) examination of commuting patterns between rural communities and urban areas as well as commuting flows between different counties (cities) in a five-county study area in central Texas based on U.S. 2000 Census Journey-to-Work data; (3) identification of traffic corridors that carry a significant amount of intercity and rural-to-urban traffic in the study area based on U.S. 2000 Census Journey-to-Work data and 2005 TTI external travel survey data; and (4) identification of rural communities that generated the largest numbers of commuting traffic and road segments that carried a high volume of traffic. The research team found that the GIS-based analysis models are effective for analyzing commuting patterns and travel corridors. Commute flows between urban and rural areas account for about 20 percent of the total commute traffic in the study area, and inter-county commute accounts for 13 percent of the total commute traffic.
Book Synopsis Use of Traveler Information to Improve Texas Transportation Network Operations in the Context of Toll Roads by : C. Michael Walton
Download or read book Use of Traveler Information to Improve Texas Transportation Network Operations in the Context of Toll Roads written by C. Michael Walton and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enhanced diversion of traffic to toll roads would have two benefits: increase toll road usage, and reduce congestion on non-tolled roads. Evaluation of the dual benefits is the primary objective and the essence of this study. The research team first synthesized the state-of-the-art in Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) implementations. Then a commuter survey was conducted in Austin, Texas to examine commuters' travel patterns, preferences and requirements on traveler information, and attitudes toward toll roads and ATIS implementation. Next, based on the survey results, a simulation case study was conducted on the transportation network of Austin, Texas using DYNASMART-P model. Finally, ATIS benefit cost analysis, implementation issues, technologies, funding opportunities, and potential business models were investigated.

Book Synopsis Trip Internalization and Mixed-use Development by :
Download or read book Trip Internalization and Mixed-use Development written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) in the Austin, TX region is incorporating a new regional growth concept, the Activity Centers for its Long-Range Transportation Plan. The planned Activity Centers would present such features as mixed uses, medium to high densities, and pedestrian friendly environmental design, which are expected to influence travel. This study reports the needed local empirical evidence of trip making behavior in association with the Activity Centers' attributes. From telephone interviews of local planners and work sessions with experts, the study identifies 42 mixed-use districts (MXDs) in the Austin area. In GIS, urban form indicators are derived for the MXDs and trip records from the 2005 Austin Activity Travel Survey are geocoded. The following analyses are then carried out for the MXD related travel: trip length distribution, trip generation rates and internal rate of capture, person miles of travel, vehicle ownership, departure time, and travel mode choice. With the empirical results, CAMPO models can be modified or refined to capture the potential effects of the Activity Centers growth strategy on regional travel.
Book Synopsis Commuting in America III by : Alan Pisarski

Commuting in America III is one of the most comprehensive documents of its kind. Based on the latest census information available, it contains 155 figures, 79 tables, and some 100 "factlets" that tell the story of America's commuting trends and patterns over the last ten years. This publication will be a valuable reference for the transportation community--practitioners, researchers, and decision makers--who wish to understand how individual behavior and public policies have affected, and will continue to affect, commuting patterns. A press release and factsheets on information contained in Commuting in America III is also available.
