Book Synopsis Aunt Alice's Goodies by : Alice Stevens
Download or read book Aunt Alice's Goodies written by Alice Stevens and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One day I started to crave peanut butter cookies the way my mother made them. Then weeks later, I had a dream about the hard fudge we used to make back in the 1950s when I was growing up on the South Side of Chicago. And whatever happened to mayonnaise cake? My psyche was trying to tell me something. And this book is the result. What my psyche has called me to do is gather my goodies into this cookbook-- to pass on the recipes that my family members have used for their celebrations through many decades of the 20th century. I reviewed my dog-eared, batter-splattered recipe cards with all the chicken-scratched handwriting and decided it was time to commit these treasures to digital format. I want the next generation to delight their children and their children's children with these old comfort sweets including home-made hard fudge, mayonnaise cake, pecan tarts, and prize-winning blueberry pie. This is a part of my culture that I don't want to loose in the frenzy for "thin." So here they are, my humble offerings. Indulge, delight, and good night!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales of Koehler Hollow tells the story of Amy Finney and her descendants. Amy, a formerly enslaved Black woman, gained her freedom and established a homestead in the Appalachian mountains during a time in American history when she was dehumanized for the color of her skin and devalued for being female. Naomi Hodge-Muse, working with Christopher A. Brooks, recounts stories from her family history, starting with her great-great-grandmother, Amy, through her parents, aunts, uncles, and siblings and their rural life. Their family story represents a microcosm of the African American experience in southern Virginia from the mid-19th century to the present - along with the complications, joys, tragedies, and sorrows that surrounded them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child abuse was once a taboo subject which families, neighbors, schools, church staff, and membership worked diligently to maintain secrecy. Passage of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) in 1974 marked the nation's first major step forward in addressing issues related to child abuse. Following this, states had mandatory reporting laws for persons aware of such abuse. This book covers the subject of child abuse, prior to CAPTA. Even though members of a family and community may have been aware of such abuse, they chose not to be involved. Occasionally, someone might speak up about such abuse, but without agencies to intervene, the child's abuse routinely increased in severity. For individuals like Jalene, the victim of child abuse and domestic violence, there were no agencies to assist her pleas for help. In 1982, the Domestic Protection Act came into place when it came to protect individuals from domestic violence. However, domestic violence in the church remained strong and without resources. According to statistics in 2017, in the Christian community, one in every four women experiences family violence. As the awareness and incidence of domestic violence increases, many pastors still adhere to the philosophy that spouses are to remain married because they took a vow before God. Some pastors find themselves ill-equipped to deal with the crisis of domestic violence. There is very little, if any, training provided in the majority of seminaries on family violence. This book also discusses the topic of parental alienation syndrome (PAS) which added another layer of sorrow to the author of this book. PAS is a term to describe psychological manipulation or undue influence of a child by a parent against the other parent, preventing an ongoing relationship between the victimized parent and their child.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it like to be born into an extended Peranakan family that has seen better days? Besides poverty, there’s strife when some don’t pull together. However, I had a wise Grandma, Dad, and Aunt. Reading transported me into a world of joy, and soon I loved learning for its own sake. The Scriptures challenged me to seek the kingdom of heaven when I was at university. Why should I teach in Selangor rather than my beloved hometown, Penang? Could I rely on God? On several occasions, I realized that God blessed me just on time! I tried to influence my students to be intrinsically motivated. I tried to nurture a passion for knowledge. Besides teaching, I researched to facilitate the learning of my students. How could I manage caring for an aging aunt, but by God’s mercy? How would I cope with my health issues, uncertain if healing would come? Would all the events, and my responses to them, show that I worship an all-powerful, merciful God in whom I can trust?
