Book excerpt: "Aula abierta is comprised of brief, modular lessons that are organized around a communicative goal, in which students have the opportunity to show what they can do using Spanish effectively. Each lesson carefully scaffolds student progress through a series of pedagogical tasks that prepare students to accomplish the final goal. Grammar, vocabulary, and pragmatic knowledge are treated more as linguistic resources than as topics of instruction. Throughout each lesson, we have taken a comparative, global approach to Hispanic culture, highlighting authentic materials from around the world, as well as Latino communities within the United States. The learning experience is highly visual, providing students with a compelling introduction to the Spanish language and culture"--
Book Synopsis Search User Interfaces by : Marti A. Hearst
Download or read book Search User Interfaces written by Marti A. Hearst and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-21 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truly world-wide reach of the Web has brought with it a new realisation of the enormous importance of usability and user interface design. In the last ten years, much has become understood about what works in search interfaces from a usability perspective, and what does not. Researchers and practitioners have developed a wide range of innovative interface ideas, but only the most broadly acceptable make their way into major web search engines. This book summarizes these developments, presenting the state of the art of search interface design, both in academic research and in deployment in commercial systems. Many books describe the algorithms behind search engines and information retrieval systems, but the unique focus of this book is specifically on the user interface. It will be welcomed by industry professionals who design systems that use search interfaces as well as graduate students and academic researchers who investigate information systems.
Book Synopsis Europe for the Europeans by : Christina Schori Liang
Download or read book Europe for the Europeans written by Christina Schori Liang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last two decades the number of political organizations on the far right, neo-populist right and neo-conservative right has been growing. Along with the mounting electoral success for many of the parties there has also been a growing disenchantment with the political class which has led to a revolt against the current political 'establishment'. The events of September 11, 2001 and the 'War on Terror' have further aggravated tensions within the populations between those who feel they are the 'legitimate' citizens of the state and those who are considered 'outsiders'. The recent expansion of the EU's borders has also brought on fears of a surge of both legal and illegal immigration. All these factors have led to a growing number of cases of harassment and outbursts of violence aimed at asylum seekers and ethnic minorities in Europe. This book measures the effects of neo-populist groups on the current political establishment and illustrates how much political appeal neo-populist views have on making current political policy.

Book excerpt: Cell Hybrids summarizes the methodology of cell fusion-the fusion of human, animal, and plant cells of different origins to produce cell hybrids-and surveys the main applications and current findings of the hybridization technique. This is followed by separate chapters on spontaneous cell fusion, virus-induced cell fusion, the cell fusion mechanism, regulation of DNA synthesis and mitosis in heterokaryons and homokaryons, and regulatory events which occur when two cells with different nuclear activity and/or phenotype are fused with each other. Subsequent chapters deal with methods used in preparing various cell fragments and some of their properties and uses in fusion experiments; isolation of growing hybrid cells; chromosome patterns and phenotypic expression in hybrid cells; cell organelles in hybrid cells; analysis of malignancy by cell hybridization. The final chapters discuss the use of somatic cell hybridization to analyze the interaction between a number of viruses and their host cells; and the use of plant cell hybrids.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique reference work presents the first comprehensive taxonomy of Coryphantha, with a complete key to the genus. It contains a new taxonomic classification of all 43 species and 11 subspecies, with morphological and ecological descriptions. These cacti, which grow in Mexico and southern USA, are characterized by their typical grooved tubercles and large flowers. Written in an easy-to-follow style and with a chapter on cultivation conditions, the work will not only be an invaluable reference manual for taxonomists and horticulturalists but also for hobbyists and plant collectors.
